There is a major problem when you do a search on Google for "Best Office Chairs" right now. You'll find well known sites showing their best picks for 2022. But when you look at their list it's clear they've never used the chairs in their list or don't know what a good chair is. We decided to show you an example of this on CNET. We want to know if you think this is a problem or not? Let us know in the comments.

Sites need to stick to what they do best. CNet shouldn't review chairs or kitchen equipment. Forbes shouldn't review video games. The list goes on and on. Also, never use affiliate links unless it's a channel or site you actually want to support.
Also, if you're looking for a chair or desk, find a reviewer with a similar body type. That's one thing I'd like to see a bit more from BTOD reviews. Not everyone is 6'4". I think the owner is 5'8" or 5'9". They have very few videos with any women and no bigger folks.

I had briefly considered the Herman-Miller Lino when I was shopping for chairs, and I appreciated BTOD's unboxing/first impressions for that chair justly for the reason that they'd had a bunch of people of different heights and body types try it out.

Agreed. While I love these videos, most of them are not all too helpful. I'm a big guy and weight around 340 lbs... a tall lanky guy saying that a chair does not fit him and is not comfy, means nothing to me. My wife is 5 feet even and skinny as a pole... for example.

Well said - bravo for calling out what it is. Here’s part of my due diligence when shopping for a “best of” … if the web site with the ‘top 5 etc’ list doesn’t actually focus/specialise in whatever I’m shopping for, I don’t even look at it. When you couple no expertise with money generation, I think its fair to call that a scam. 👏

I was recently in the market for an office chair because my Vertagear Triigger 350 broke. I was looking for lists via Google because I knew about the Aeron and Embody, but not much else. @@btodtv I actually loved it! I was able to get it on sale for $520 Black Friday 2018. A few months ago, adjusting my position in the chair, I pushed myself too hard against the back and heard something pop. The back no longer stayed up. For maybe a month or so, I was able to keep it upright while locked, but eventually it leaned too far back to sit comfortably. I think it may have still had warranty left, but I didn't bother checking to see if the problem was covered. I was already entertaining the idea of replacing the chair anyway.

I'm wondering if you would consider doing a tier list for chairs for tall people? I've seen your video on big&tall chairs, but one of the hardest things for me is finding chairs that can deal with me being 2m (over 6'6). I know about the Aeron C, and people say the secretlab Titan XL is good, but it feels like there's not a whole lot out there for us tall folks aside from that.

I'd definitely like more videos on these terrible lists. Back in 2020, when I didn't have the budget for the likes of Herman-Miller, I was trying to look into office chairs at a $150-300 price point that were ergonomically designed and would last reasonably, but lists like these plus the ones that recommended "gamer" chairs made it hard to separate wheat from chaff. Sometimes you find an obscure little product that's remarkable bang-for-buck, and I was hoping there's be a few of those in the chair space, but most of these lists smelled extremely fishy.
(I just ordered myself a Herman-Miller chair, so thankfully this isn't a problem for me anymore-my choice of model was partly informed by some of your other videos, so thank y'all!)

I've owned that serta chair for a few years and it is showing it a bit of wear and tear now. I never did like the slouch too much because it feels like it wants to cradle you constantly, so a little annoying. However I got it on sale for around 200$ at a office depot.

  • @6milesup
    @6milesup ปีที่แล้ว

I am not sure what X-chair you actually tested in your video, but I recently purchased an X3 and it does not have that forward tilt that you are showing. Also, the mechanism under the chair is significantly more stout than the one in the video. It looks like you have a bottom-of-the-line one. I am 6ft, and 210lbs, and the X3 fits me fine. I tried an Aeron chair because it was the one that is all hyped up, but I hated it. I also tried another chair in the same store (forgot the name), which was $800. I hated that one too. The X-chair was a magnitude above that one. Each person has their preference for chairs and what feels good, just like shoes.

The issue is that Cnet and the other sites have a very specific target audience, average people with no other knowledge of the products that won't research into the wider market, it's really no different from going into your basic office supply store/aisle and getting whatever they sell, and this leads into how they can manipulate their lists to drive affiliate revenue as their audience won't know any better and won't seek better sources. It's not just bad journalism, it's also an issue with audience mentality, the audience starts and stops with the one article; and you can draw parallels between this and many other topics, it's like people who use Facebook as their news source and immediately believe whatever they see, whether or not how accurate the source was.
The x3's forward tilt is a bit interesting. For anything with a more forward posture, such as working over a desk, it makes sense; but it's not really marketed as such, there's not really a market for this currently, and there's not really a term to define this, as 'drafting chairs' are just office chairs on a stilt for standing desks, standing desk chairs are often just a tall stool, task chairs are just more basic office chairs, there's not a good unused term where the 'forward/leaning posture over a work surface' concept fits. At the same time, the forward tilt needs a lockout that still allows for backward tilt. As someone who has their desk space and work space within rolling distance, I could see how this could work, because the forward posture helps with reaching beyond where a keyboard or notepad would be where space is actually utilized on a work surface, I've also done hand drafting and various art stuff before on tilted desks and I can see how this forward tilt concept could also translate to that; my only big complaint with the concept is the leg portion of the posture, you'd need a forward tilt that pivots at the knees, not the center tilt most chairs utilize, but I also argue this with back tilt and reclining, your lower leg needs to stay in the same position throughout the range of tilt. It's a unique situation that doesn't have much of a market, seems like hell to actually market, and fits a very niche market, it could work if designed properly but would end up being an additional feature with an additional mechanism that would end up on an office chair due to market dynamics.

Every list I have seen from CNET, just to bully them (deservingly), has been garbage. 1 or maybe 3 of the products are decent, while the rest are either standard affairs straight down to Dont-Buy-This tier. This wouldn't be an issue if they didn't use phrases like "THE BEST OF ______ for 20__!"
Funnily enough though I noticed the advertisement algorithms and browser cookies noted I wanted the "best of [insert product here]" and it will usually show me something decent within a few minutes, so at least their meta-tags and titles are accidentally helping.

Most of those chairs are extremely uncomfortable for someone who is 5'4" (on a good day) like me. Most of the headrests on the ergonomic chairs I've sat in fall on the back of my head or above it making them useless, the lumbar support never lines up properly making them uncomfortable and the seat is sometimes so wide and deep that it's a struggle to get in and out and then my arms don't rest well on the armrests making the entire $350+ chair an uncomfortable experience, not to mention that my feet can't reach the floor when I sit in them. The Amazon Basics chair in that regard isn't too small, it's perfect size for me. It may be cheap and it won't last long but it will be 100x more comfortable because it would fit me. @OneFortyFour PITA but i havent had to pay ive made sure the return policy is good. amazon , wayfair , costco , staples etc. and its true just because its expensive doesnt mean it will fit you. ive learned that the hard way. what else ive learned is it seems chairs today are made for 5ft tall women or 7 ft tall men nothing in between.. im 6ft tall and a few chairs my feet wouldn't touch the ground in the lowest position.. i mean what the hell?

@@InnovativeBuildersmd Actually, I hear way more complaints about chairs not being small or big enough for people outside the average height range lol. What 5 chairs have you actually tried?

@OneFortyFour Depends on where you buy the chair from tbh, always best to check the returns policy.

This is a good review but I'd like to see more women testing the chairs. 50% of my team are women.
