- Do what you will but I will never admit that Gale is a wizard. One of the Owlbears, JT, has never played Baldur's Gate 3, because he doesn't have a life. So let's embarrass him and ruthlessly mock him for his ignorance as he tries to guess what classes these characters are!

Shane here, I was trying so hard not to laugh as well when JT started making those comments about Gale. I could just see the "fighter" guess forming, and it took all of my willpower not to laugh

Low fat percentage from eating habits while in isolation for a year and a parasitic entity eating away at him.
(I personally look more fit than I actually am because my eating habits result in me having a low fat percentage, making my underlining muscles stand out more because less fat is covering them.)
Despite complaining about his knees, he keeps up with the party rather well. He's climbing as many twisted vines and cragged rocks as everyone else. Maybe he is more endurance than strength.
...that's all I got. Maybe they just wanted him to look hot. Maybe Mystra wanted his body to fit her preferences.
He's not even the worst offender. My man... Halsin.
(In all honesty, I totally agree and understand why assumptions were made. That's partially why it's funny.)
Y'know if they wanted Gale to read as a Wizard then maybe they shouldn't have designed a character who is 112% a Fighter. Don't blame me for the game devs' mistake

With Gale, you can chalk it up to either laziness or efficiency, depending on how charitable you want to be.
Every character just uses a default body model, and the male bodies are both absolutely shredded. Gale just has the one that looks less shredded.
With Halsin, it just seems like his stats are completely incongruent with his design inherently. They gave him the "strong" body type, but only 10 STR. No excuse.
Using just the headshots is a real handicap. Full body with their default costume would be more fair.
Wouldn't that show the weapons they're holding? That would give away the classes of most of the characters

The portraits definitely is a poor representation of the characters in my opinion as well. Better to show them in full body, in camp outfits would be fine to not reveal weapons or armour.

that's why i love to multiclass him with some sword-bard. when enemies just have some HP left, he uses vicious mockery to kill them.
Yeah I made him Arcane Trickster as a Rogue and then Multiclassed into a bard and it worked really well.

Can't ever not use one of my two favourite Astarion builds - Ninja (Thief4/OH Monk 8) or Deadshot (Thief4/Gloomstalker 8).

Truee he just sounds charismatic but it’s just mostly the pickup lines he used in his, uhh, hunts for cazador

Tbf while he is rhetorically strong, he often doesn't care for the feelings of others (or so it seems), so sounds harsh and mean often, which might represent his "lows" on charisma. On the other hand it is just a game value and DnD is kinda limiting on how that is reflected on the character. BG3 does the right thing in seperating the two
Yup and it shows. The man couldn't fool any player for longer than 2 seconds even after practicing for 200 years.....But that's cute so I'd follow him anywhere anyways.☺💀

My head cannon for characters with seemingly out of character stats (shadowhearts intelligence gales strength being lower than a child astarion being as persuasive as a random nobody while being a vampire and a charlatan) for shadowheart repeated mind wipes have given her brain damage making her retain information much harder and learning new information much slower. Astarion is so obviously 2 faced yet charming that you want to listen but would never trust him unless he dropped his glib demeanor. Gales muscles are fake. As in he doesn't actually work out they're made with magic. Or the pain from the orb makes it difficult for him to exert himself to much.

I feel like he 100% needed full-body shots. Asterion as a bard still probably would have been the call. But Gale in a purple robe? 100% magic user. Karlach is a tall, beefy lady. Would have maybe leaned toward something physical. Halsin maybe would have gotten barbarian too, since he's a big boy. As far as Jaheria goes, I see a character design with half of the hair braided and lots of brown and green on the clothing, I'm instantly thinking druid.
The clothing is sooooooo much a part of the character design.
Full-body would definitely have been easier, and I (Shane) didn't want to make it easy for him. If we could somehow make both videos I would, but he knows the answers now. Hopefully you still enjoyed the hard mode version

Jaheira is Granny Weatherwax.
I always give her a couple of Ranger levels - sure, she's mainly a druid but doesn't wild shape much. And ranger dip fits the Harper scout backstory.

I would have given 0.7 points on Minthara as a cleric, since that was the original plan for her.

Just like Karlach was a Paladin for most of Early Access then the fans began vocally begging for her to be a monk or barbarian instead.
@ManubibiWalsh yeah beta Minthara was a cleric, you can see in with her MTG card that uses beta design.
Would have been good to use pictures of them in their camp clothes. That way a full body shot could have been given.
I also agree with the comment about guessing cleric for Minthara should have given a partial point. She was a cleric for a long time in early access.

20:30 The Minsc art here is from Baldur's gate 2. Minsc was an extremely popular companion in both Baldur's gate 1 and 2.
Voiced in the first two games by a veteran voice actor Jim Cummings.
Jaheira used to be fighter/druid in BG1 and 2 (AD&D ruleset multiclass), but in BG3 she starts out as a pure druid.
Minsc was in BG2, in fact one of the first companions you could pick up in the prologue, and that portrait on his second slide is from BG2.
Minsc and Jaheira are both with you at the start of BG2, and I believe the only returning characters from 1. So it's quite fitting that they're both also in the third game.

Pretty good reads. Shows the power of character design. If he'd had fullbody images it would have been easier, but I think a few characters might still have tripped him up.
I wish you'd shown him the Dark Urge too :D

Someone who doesn't like being in the city but will begrugingly do so is quite on point for Jaheira, she comments every now and then about disliking the cities in the first two Baldurs Gate games.

My favourite Minsc factoid is that BG1, which was based off of Second Edition, had minimum anility score requirements for classes. Despite being a ranger, Minsc's Wisdom is not high enough to qualify -- it's 9.
There is, on the optional critical hit tables, a head injury result which permanently halves all your mental stats. (Int, Wis, Cha).
Soon after introducing himself, he brings up that he had a severe head injury in the past.
So he originally had a wisdom of 18???

I played him as an eldritch knight when I played him as origin and it was super flavorful. Really captures the feeling that his magic was ripped from him and he had to adapt his combat style while he got his real power back.
Could roleplay it as Mystra being so mad at him that she stripped him of all magic
If he guessed barbarian for minsc and/or fighter for Jaheira then I would personally give it to him since I believe that they are both canonically multiclassed. It is just that BG3 has you build up all the characters from level one regardless of what level/stage of the game you recruit them at.
Jaheira feels like a trap, because she canonically a fighter/druid in BG1 and BG2 so her character as a druid is a little weird.
This is why I always drop a couple of Ranger levels on her.

Minsc is in both BG1 and BG2. In BG1 he is able to be recruited in Act 2 of the game. In BG2 Minsc is one of the characters that is in the prison with the player character at the very beginning of the game.

as someone who made Astarion a 4/8 rogue/bard I 100% agree that he gives off bard energy, he has to play the violin as well
Astarion probably should have been a bard personality-wise. Barbarian based on his propensity for violence, blood, intimidation. Wife-stealer based on rizz and looks. Babygirl and rogue by lore. Best friend based on gossip and loyalty. He's the most flamboyant but also the most masculine companion besides Halsin, as well as the funniest person in the peanut gallery. I pity the rare man that hates him because they're missing out.
Minsc is 100% in BG2, currently replaying it with him in my party.
The remaining .7 of his 4.7 is all the almost-right guesses
Harry Dresden has a pretty strong jawline if Im remembering his description correctly... but to be fair... he's not too shabby in a brawl either.
20:35 wrong. Minsc is in Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 as well as 3. He was in fact a member of the starting party in 2 alongside Jaheira and is in fact optional in 1. So you might've gotten them mixed up because there's no way you'd miss him in 2

"There's not a wizard in all of fiction that has that strong of a jawline." Ariakas, Dragon Highlord and commander of the Dark Queen's armies in the Chronicles of Krynn, is a fighter/wizard who has the physical strength to destroy heavy oak doors with a single blow from his fist.

Minsc is in BG2, he is perhaps the most beloved companion.
For real Gale is way too swole for a wizard. And no one who looks like that would have an 8 in strength.
To be fair, I have Halsin use owl bear rage often enough that he might as well be a barbarian
So here’s the thing, respeccing a character immediately sets their ability scores to the default for their class. For some reason recruiting the companions in the later acts also respecs them when they join, that’s why after recruiting Minsc’s strength isn’t very high either and Jaheira’s dex is lower than it should be to actually work with her scimitar. That’s actually why Halsin has low strength. If you inspect him before recruiting him you will see that he has 16 strength I believe. Once you add him to your party it just sets him to low strength since Druids don’t need strength.
You should have done a bonus round guessing what the Dark Urge default class is
As soon as I get Withers, I usually respec Astarion as a Bard (College of Swords) and I change Shadowheart's domain to Life rather than Trickery. I've also experimented with Gale as a sorcerer but not all the time.
Sweetheart does pretty well as a Tempest cleric with Storm Sorcerer dip. Gale Wiz 8/ Dragon Sorc 4 is fun.
Gale does have a high Constitution so he can look like a fighter
Nice to see a fellow Minthara simp.😌 Astarion owns my heart and mind, but Minty is a very close second favorite. She's intimidating and yet so freakin' adorable when she's in her cuddly and vulnerable pillow talk mood.🥰 As you might have guessed from my two favorites, I have a thing for people with that kind of duality (Astarion is mean but all is forgiven the moment he flashes his usual puppy dog eyes☺).

20:30 That artwork of Minsc is from Baldur's Gate 2 and he was definitely in Baldur's Gate 2... in fact, Minsc and Jaheira are the very first NPCs the player meets in BG2, right in the "prologue" when your amnesiac Bhaalspawn character wakes up chained up in a gaol and has to escape. They both are in BG1, BG2 and BG3.
I think Teen Titan's Raven would be a shadow monk personally but i can definitely see the sorcerer vibe!
J. T. here! I love the lore connection of meditation and self-discipline that Raven uses to control her demonic side, and that could absolutely make sense for a Monk. But I mean, c'mon? Funnily enough I play Gale as a heavy armor multi class because he looks awesome in armor

I like to swap around peoples camp clothes and Karlach is super cute in Gales comfy purple clothes but that also means Gale is in Karlach’s trousers (sans shirt)

i feel like they did him dirty by not showing the entire character models.
I haven't played Baldur's Gate I, II or III, so here are my picks; Astarion Bard; Gale Fighter/Pirate; Halsin Ranger; Jaheira Sorceress; Karlach Warlock;; Laez'el barbarian; Minsc Monk; Minthara Cleric; Shadowheart Cleric; Wyll Bard. I was close to their expert, often following the same logic and having the same second choices.
The head portrait of Astarion didn't even show his elven ears, but calling him a "tiefling" when he doesnt even have horns is a weird read.
Also, considering what weird hair/skin/eye colours elves can have in Forgotten Realms and how Astarion is so pale and has silvery-grey-white hair, the red eyes are supposed to make people think he's an albino. What is far more telling in-game is how you can see the two scars on his neck when you first meet him if you pay a little bit of attention (esp if you get the scene where he tackles you to the ground) and the tiny fangs when he talks...

It caught Marshal and me (Shane) off guard as well, but trust us, it's incredibly accurate

In his defense with Gale, he does have the City Watch ability and a few weapon profs with it. So he did used to be a captain or a bit of a brawler there, from a certain point of view

Hey to be fair, Halsin is an outlander and he's wild, so that does fit the barbarian vibe.
Also, it took me way too long to find Gale in the game (actually if I hadn't looked it up he'd have died in that portal), and both his personality and his voice were nothing like I imagined from looking at his picture. He sounds sweet and nerdy, but looks like he'd have a lower voice, and be a typical leading fighting man. I'm glad he isn't.
Also, my feelings about Lae'zel changed throughout the game, and I legit cried when we said goodbye 😭
Minsc is definitely in BG2 - he's one of the companions you can pick up right from the start. Also I think that was his bg2 portrait, but I'm not sure
To be fair for Minthara, in ealry access before Paladin was added, she used to be a Cleric.
I feel like you shoulda done the character intro videos for the reveal instead of just a picture with the answer!! Woulda made calling Gale not a wizard much more goofy since he acts so much like a wizard haha

I think clips of them talking would have given a bit better leg up on who and what these characters are, but might have given away too much. I dunno. Gale, for sure, doesn't come off as a fighter. Astarion though, yeah, he's totally got "steal your wife or husband" bard energy, haha. And Karlach's sweetness would have shone through. 🙂

You Take Jaheira on a date to Friendly Arms Inn. Jaheira and her husband Khalid first appear there in BG1. Oh that is fun using her picture old BG.
There really aren't multiple ways to pronounce "Astarion". Just one. The way the way the voice actor himself pronounces it and also every other character in the game: _[Ah-STAH-ri-on]._ For crying out loud, when you first meet Astarion in-game he introduces himself to you _by name!_ The only person who started this "A-stair-ion" American pronunciation was the gamemaster guy who ran the promo D&D5E BG3 "sidequest" for the BG3 voice actors where they played as the BG3 characters.

Githyanki have a very high inclination for fighters specifically (not martials overall) due to their militaristic nature, magic users of all kinds still exist (usually more arcane in nature if they do show themselves).
Whereas, Githzerai have a very high inclination for the spiritual and are almost never to be seen using arcane based magic unlike the Githyanki. Most of the Githzerai are gonna be monks, with the occasional cleric/paladin.
