At 2:30 when Luane asks for a divorce, Kirk is stunned at first because he's genuinely hurt. However he quickly falls back into his old pattern because he thinks that she's just playing out their dynamic, which is 'fight, empty threat, sweep under the rug, repeat'. It's the only relationship dynamic he knows. Brilliant writing.
Except, Luanne was very serious in divorcing Kirk. She moved on quickly after he left by getting rid of his stuff in burning it, a good paying job to support herself and Milhouse and an attractive boyfriend in Pyro from American Gladiators. Kirk's life started out fine after the divorce when he found himself an apartment and friends of his own. However, problems soon arise when his former father-in-law fires him from the Southern Cracker company for his managerial incompetence, his girlfriend steals his car and leaves him at Moe's with his tape.

Clearly, Kirk wasn't going anywhere once he left the army and doesn't seem to have had any other skills. I think the story after separating illustrates the difference in their lives and expectations. Luanne wanted the better life whereas Kirk was still dreaming of something he was never likely to achieve.
Also, changed his tone when looking at the other couples to put on a tough guy attitude. To “stick to his guns” so to speak. Just shows how fake and shallow he is.
A subtle and brilliant detail. At 1:48 Maude is sitting facing towards the Van Houtens. At 2:13 she’s turned away, clearly uncomfortable, with Ned embracing her. She clearly can’t handle the cringe and Neddy is doing his best to make her feel better. Very wholesome.

They killed her off when the show was at its meanest and later I think they realized that even a character who’s not very important like Maude, is still integral for the characters and the show.
Yeah, Maggie Roswell wanted a raise so that she could cover travel costs from travelling to record her lines, but Fox only offered a $150 raise, and she decided that wasn’t enough, so she left, and that’s why they killed off Maude. But Roswell later returned to the show, on the condition that she record from her house.

I like the detail of Reverend Lovejoy resignedly putting his head in his hands at the divorce while the rest are uncomfortable or horrified. He's got to have seen so many married couples fall apart like that.
Marge: "A divorce? Isn't that a sin?" Lovejoy: "Marge, practically everything's a sin. Have you ever sat down and read this thing? Technically, we're not allowed to go to the bathroom."
I have to say, Hank Azaria as Kirk is probably one of his best characters because of how genuine this entire performance is. The guy who looks exactly like his wife with the goofy big nose and comically large glasses is one of the most fucking realest characters on the show, imagine that.
Kirk: Ok genius, you draw dignity. (Luanne does and starts off by drawing a picture of a man digging + someone knitting + a gentleman drinking tea. The guests see it, but the viewers don't) Everyone: Oh, that's dignity. Hibbert: Worthy of Webster's.
Aside from Homer's perfect "that's a door?" delivery, watch his face during the pictionary argument when the camera is on him. Everyone else is worried and all he is doing is just watching with his classic empty expression. It makes me laugh each time I see it lol
This was probably the only time Homer was able to stick it to Marge and mentally tell her off that he was right in the end. He warned her not to throw this dinner party after what happened last time with him getting drunk, hitting on Maude and embarrassing everyone including her. Marge put her foot down and insisted on it because she's tired of dealing with her neighbors having one, while she never hosts one because of Homer's refusal.
The whole episode is priceless. Really miss the cynically crude humor of the early seasons. Btw the scene when Homer sees Kirk's audio tape of his song "can I borrow a feeling" and cracks up right there gets me every time.
Even though it's obvious that Kirk and Luane's seperation was inevitable, at 2:42 you can see Kirk have a moment of realization that this argument has gone too far after she proposes the idea of a divorce. However, seeing the spectators in the room, he refuses to back down to his wife in front of their friends even though it's possible that things could have de-escalated in private.
Marge should've got angry and yelled at them for bringing their marital problem into her party. She should've kicked Kirk and Luanne out of her house by telling them to leave because their fighting is making her guests uncomfortable.

This happened once at a party my husband and I hosted. Not as bad but yeah we were kinda a deer in headlights. Thankfully one of our friends had the sense to suggest a smoke break outside and a bunch of us went out to keep chatting. None of us smoked.

This is just a classic scene. The jokes just roll one after the other. Even Marge's frantic attempts to prevent the argument from happening, such as her tucking away the crackers under the couch is just priceless. Homer's bemusement makes it hilarious as well!
Same with King of the Hill. Alot of the eps are just fun to watch as a kid, but as an adult alot of them have real shit that many ppl go through and that it often doesn't have a happy ending.
Golden era Simpsons was untouchable, so many hilarious jokes in such a short clip, and it made me realize Simpsons is probably the most quotable cartoon in history
This episode is really sad if you think about it. First Kirk and Luane get a divorce, then Kirk realizes his mistakes, then realizes that Homer has made the same mistakes and still has a happy marriage. Then he sees Homer and Marge re-marry and Kirk try’s the same but is rejected. He tried to right his wrongs and was rejected, causing his downward spiral to deepen.
@@meyagueexactly, I went through it in my last relationship and it's a very hard thing to remove once it sets in. It feels like every single thing they do is now a jab at you and both of you are now constantly stuck being short and annoyed with each other and like you said, it always ends.

I didn't understand why he roasted her so hard and pushed her so far and still got surprised when she left him, as an adult I now understand how it's so easy to let petty things look like the bigger picture. The real problem was him not feeling appreciated and not knowing how to deal with his failures, discounting everything on her, and with her, was bottling up all her real feelings and letting them out as quirky remarks that slowly set the marriage on fire. In the end, he became a true failure and a lonely loser and she became a loose woman that goes out with boy toys. Booth of them could have completed their failures and achieved a higher goal, but alone their worst qualities come to life.
Luann went from being in a miserable marriage to a spiteful guy who never appreciated her, to being way happier. There is absolutely no way she was better off staying with him
I wished the producers kept Kirk and Luanne separated. They could reconcile with each other as they and Chase look for Milhouse. After finding him, they apologize to him for their neglect and behavior. Seeing how happy Luanne is with Chase, Kirk apologizes for his behavior and they are amicable. He could move on with his life, find a job that he's happy doing and is more satisfying than being a manager at the cracker factory and be a better person. This would've brought resolve to Kirk and Luanne and show kids that it's ok to have divorced parents who still love their kids.
He took her for granted like close family members often do, thinking you can do or say anything but you're kind of stuck with each other. He acted as if he's in a position to demand things from her just cus they're married. Everyone has a breaking point and clearly Luanne could do better
For years, Homer's outburst at 1:48 (and elsewhere) always struck me as comically mistimed. Now, as a grown adult, I'm with Homer: Kirk is publicly kicking his marriage away and taking out his own failings on his wife. LET THE WOMAN TALK!
How was this a bad episode? Okay, Homer worrying that his marriage to Marge will fall apart similarly was kind of cliche (they should not have gotten rid of the sub-story about Bart trying to split up Marge and Homer after realizing that kids of divorce get special treatment), but everything else was golden. As for bad episodes of season eight: My Sister My Sitter did suck, but I did like the part where Lisa takes Bart to the late-night free clinic and we see how each of the ancillary characters on the show got injured (Snake lying about getting shot during a robbery, Comic Book Guy overeating out of loneliness, Smithers having a butt injury that makes it painful for him to sit down and may or may not be a clue about Smithers being gay). The season eight episodes I didn't care for are the Treehouse of Horror where Bart has a feral twin, Lisa creates a mini-universe, and Kang and Kodos pose as Bill Clinton and Bob Dole (the episode is funny, but it's mostly out of date), the one where Bart gets a credit card under Santa's Little Helper's name ("Married...With Children" did it better), and (unpopular opinion) the Frank Grimes episode.
Maturity is realizing that Luann was no better than Kirk. She tells their son that his father is a loser and constantly throws her husband's failings in his face instead of being supportive. Then she admits that she'll STEAL from the church and beg her sister for money before she gets off her butt to get a freaking job???
1:14 This is classic Simpsons! In "Homer the Heretic" they cheated us out of the meaning of life. In "Homer goes to college" they cheated us out of the Itchy and Scratchy episode to end all Itchy and Scratchy episodes. And now in "A Milhouse Divided" they cheated us out of the physical manifestation of dignity.
Here's how I interpreted Luanne's drawing of Dignity. The dig part is a man digging a hole, plus a knee cap for the ni part, and she added another plus sign for a gentleman having tea for the ty part. The way Kirk drew dignity made it look disarray. It was basically a potato with dark lines on it

I even made the effort to make Homer behave for once without him sneaking off to Moe's to get himself drunk and resulting in him embarrassing me in front of our guests. What are you two doing? YOU'RE EMBARRASSING ME IN FRONT OF OUR GUESTS WITH YOUR CONTINUOUS FIGHTING!! MY PARTY IS NO PLACE FOR YOU TO BRING YOUR MARITAL PROBLEMS AND RUIN THE GOOD MOOD I SET FOR THIS NIGHT!!! IF YOU ARE GOING TO BEHAVE LIKE THAT, THEN GET YOUR STUFF AND GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!

I like the detail of Reverend Lovejoy resignedly putting his head in his hands at the divorce while the rest are uncomfortable or horrified. He's got to have seen so many married couples fall apart like that.
I think it's because of the revelation that Kirk takes the donated clothing, not the divorce.
Marge: "A divorce? Isn't that a sin?"
Lovejoy: "Marge, practically everything's a sin. Have you ever sat down and read this thing? Technically, we're not allowed to go to the bathroom."

I have to say, Hank Azaria as Kirk is probably one of his best characters because of how genuine this entire performance is. The guy who looks exactly like his wife with the goofy big nose and comically large glasses is one of the most fucking realest characters on the show, imagine that.

Aside from Homer's perfect "that's a door?" delivery, watch his face during the pictionary argument when the camera is on him. Everyone else is worried and all he is doing is just watching with his classic empty expression. It makes me laugh each time I see it lol
This was probably the only time Homer was able to stick it to Marge and mentally tell her off that he was right in the end. He warned her not to throw this dinner party after what happened last time with him getting drunk, hitting on Maude and embarrassing everyone including her. Marge put her foot down and insisted on it because she's tired of dealing with her neighbors having one, while she never hosts one because of Homer's refusal.

Even though it's obvious that Kirk and Luane's seperation was inevitable, at 2:42 you can see Kirk have a moment of realization that this argument has gone too far after she proposes the idea of a divorce. However, seeing the spectators in the room, he refuses to back down to his wife in front of their friends even though it's possible that things could have de-escalated in private.
It was inevitable, once someone realizes that they haven't been happy for a long time its pretty much over.

Marge should've got angry and yelled at them for bringing their marital problem into her party. She should've kicked Kirk and Luanne out of her house by telling them to leave because their fighting is making her guests uncomfortable.

Besides, Marge doesn't have a mean bone in her body, I mean she literally brings the Mafia of all people Lemonade when they congregate on her lawn.
This happened once at a party my husband and I hosted. Not as bad but yeah we were kinda a deer in headlights. Thankfully one of our friends had the sense to suggest a smoke break outside and a bunch of us went out to keep chatting. None of us smoked.
I didn't she had a mean bone in her body. I said she should've confronted Kirk and Luanne for their behavior and told them to leave. Marge knew their fighting was making her guests uncomfortable.

This is just a classic scene. The jokes just roll one after the other. Even Marge's frantic attempts to prevent the argument from happening, such as her tucking away the crackers under the couch is just priceless. Homer's bemusement makes it hilarious as well!

When you're a kid this great fun....as an adult it's depressing as hell.
Same with King of the Hill. Alot of the eps are just fun to watch as a kid, but as an adult alot of them have real shit that many ppl go through and that it often doesn't have a happy ending.

This episode is really sad if you think about it. First Kirk and Luane get a divorce, then Kirk realizes his mistakes, then realizes that Homer has made the same mistakes and still has a happy marriage. Then he sees Homer and Marge re-marry and Kirk try’s the same but is rejected. He tried to right his wrongs and was rejected, causing his downward spiral to deepen.
That's because they're both selfish and miserable characters, no real redeeming qualities.

They captured contempt so well. Once there is contempt in any relationship, serious work needs to be done ASAP or it’s gone forever.
it's reaaally hard to go back to a place of mutual respect once contempt has settled in, I feel like that at that point it's better to just break off.
@@meyagueexactly, I went through it in my last relationship and it's a very hard thing to remove once it sets in. It feels like every single thing they do is now a jab at you and both of you are now constantly stuck being short and annoyed with each other and like you said, it always ends.

I remember watching this as a kid and feeling upset cos it reminded me of my parents, they argued like that every damn day
I didn't understand why he roasted her so hard and pushed her so far and still got surprised when she left him, as an adult I now understand how it's so easy to let petty things look like the bigger picture.
The real problem was him not feeling appreciated and not knowing how to deal with his failures, discounting everything on her, and with her, was bottling up all her real feelings and letting them out as quirky remarks that slowly set the marriage on fire.
In the end, he became a true failure and a lonely loser and she became a loose woman that goes out with boy toys.
Booth of them could have completed their failures and achieved a higher goal, but alone their worst qualities come to life.
Luann went from being in a miserable marriage to a spiteful guy who never appreciated her, to being way happier. There is absolutely no way she was better off staying with him

I wished the producers kept Kirk and Luanne separated. They could reconcile with each other as they and Chase look for Milhouse. After finding him, they apologize to him for their neglect and behavior. Seeing how happy Luanne is with Chase, Kirk apologizes for his behavior and they are amicable. He could move on with his life, find a job that he's happy doing and is more satisfying than being a manager at the cracker factory and be a better person. This would've brought resolve to Kirk and Luanne and show kids that it's ok to have divorced parents who still love their kids.
He took her for granted like close family members often do, thinking you can do or say anything but you're kind of stuck with each other. He acted as if he's in a position to demand things from her just cus they're married. Everyone has a breaking point and clearly Luanne could do better
That little detail of Marge putting away and hiding the Allied biscuits always makes me chuckle.
I was impressed that they have Ned using his left hand when they are all sat at the dining table.

I can’t believe people say that this is the worst episode of season 8. It’s a masterpiece compared to the travesty of My Sister My Sitter.
How was this a bad episode? Okay, Homer worrying that his marriage to Marge will fall apart similarly was kind of cliche (they should not have gotten rid of the sub-story about Bart trying to split up Marge and Homer after realizing that kids of divorce get special treatment), but everything else was golden.
As for bad episodes of season eight: My Sister My Sitter did suck, but I did like the part where Lisa takes Bart to the late-night free clinic and we see how each of the ancillary characters on the show got injured (Snake lying about getting shot during a robbery, Comic Book Guy overeating out of loneliness, Smithers having a butt injury that makes it painful for him to sit down and may or may not be a clue about Smithers being gay). The season eight episodes I didn't care for are the Treehouse of Horror where Bart has a feral twin, Lisa creates a mini-universe, and Kang and Kodos pose as Bill Clinton and Bob Dole (the episode is funny, but it's mostly out of date), the one where Bart gets a credit card under Santa's Little Helper's name ("Married...With Children" did it better), and (unpopular opinion) the Frank Grimes episode.
This 4 minute clip is better than ANY modern Simpsons episode
