I live in Western Canada and our municipality has the most amazing event. Every year we have “Spring Cleanup Day” when people are allowed to put extra “garbage” and large items out in a pile at the curb. The weekend before people put out furniture, decor, building supplies, plant pots, etc. that they want to get rid of. Residents then can drive around and take whatever they want from the piles. We jokingly call it “Redneck Christmas”. Anything that is left gets picked up by a series of city recycling and garbage trucks. It offers a fun and sustainable way to deal with the excess stuff that tends to accumulate. My two favourite finds are an antique Asian wooden rice bucket and a vintage portable mimeograph machine. My friend found a vintage Apollo 860 Domed Stereo on stand with matching speakers. It is the BEST! More places should do it.
@ it is so fun! In addition to being practical and useful it builds a sense of community because people get into the spirit of it and enjoy the hunt. You also see kids come home carrying things like an old basketball hoop or something random that they are very excited about. It’s nice that things are saved from the landfill. There is a man who collects some of the bikes. He fixes them up and then donates them to charity ❤
Paige, I feel yours is the “indie” channel of decor TH-cam. It always impresses me that you have half the subscribers of channels that are not half as good as yours, so I feel like part of a community that has “discovered” a gem. Love your channel!
As someone who in 2023, really wanted to get off social media and back to books, I offer one tip: start with a murder mystery or some other type of "page turner." My gateway book was "Girl on a Train" by Paula Hawkins. I couldn't put it down and by the summer I was back to more serious literature. Good luck!
I second this!! Every time I find myself in a reading slump, I pick up a suspense book. I find I need to remind myself that reading is a form of entertainment and pleasure. It doesn't have to be sophisticated all the time (or at all). Also, a book club has been the true secret to maintaining a long term reading habit.
for me the gateway are cheesy romance novels. also audiobooks!! rent from the library, it makes commuting an hour each way the favorite part of my day :)
ah that poster is from the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, which is a great museum. It used to contain very, very beautiful objects from antiquity. The lay out is very cool as it feels like you are walking through old buildings of antiquity. But sadly it was closed in 2023 for at least 20 years so they can complete extensive renovations. Very German time frame (I have lived here for 15 years and feel I am allowed to say that). The sculptor Rainer Kriester was a German artist (born in the 1935)- and seems to have held an exhibition in the space in 2000. He died 2 years later. Interesting to learn about it and him through this video!
28:46 The best ways I've found on getting back to reading: *Getting an ebook reader (also a great thing to thrift btw) *Reading silly smut/fantasy/adventure- don't put pressure on yourself to read literary masterpieces - it's way easier to get back into reading if You read purely for pleasure
It's so cool to hear your stance on animal products, respect. I feel like it's really rare that people oriented towards aesthetics like beauty or interior design or fashion take any notice of those kinds of things.
Almost everything I own is either hand me downs/inherited or thrift, I have a couple shelves that are new, and some Knick knacks that are new that I love, but almost everything else was my grandmas or my mom's. I inherited two really cool lamps that are midcentury modern, so my tastes are eclectic at best. My favorites are a small bedside lamp my Great Granddad made, a beautiful oak side table from my great uncle, and a folding table from my mom, the wood is amazing and it is so handy to be able to fold down both or one side and have a smaller presence in a space.
I get so proud of the Danish design tradition, every time you show Danish design. Louis Poulsen is the company that produces lamps designed by Danish designers. The white floor lamp was designed by Verner Panton.
Fun video! Majority of my things are thrifted. A thrifted life is great. So many things I’d never have the money to buy new, and even if I could why would I? I love the hunt and thrill of a good deal. My most complimented clothes are thrifted; you can’t find that stuff at the big stores locally/ it’s vintage. I love to thrift for friends too.
Great finds and the neat thing is that there's still plenty out there to be found. I have a method of thrifting of going to the furniture area first then frames and then lamps and bric-a-brac. It really takes a good eye and knowledge of design and patina. I like finding good wood frames with linen liners and preferably the Hecho Mexico because I do modernist paintings that work well with them. The best thrifted find was a Made in Denmark 1960's credenza made of teak. The price was only $15.00 because in was in need of a refinish and had some big cardboard panel stapled to the back that was very old and faded green which turned out to be just a protector back piece to protect the solid wood back when it was originally shipped that the owners had never removed The back was indent stamped with the words "Made in Denmark" into the teak. It turned out it's worth over $1,000.00. I gave it to my daughter after it was all cleaned up. The other two things were a pair of Eero Saarinen executive chairs and original that I found in of all places in a car exhaust welding repair shop that mechanics had been sitting on the last fifty some years. I made an offer to the owner of $100.00 each and he sold them to me!
22:36 Gio Ponti ladderback chair--really light and sturdy Italian farm kitchen chair. I love these chairs and Gio Ponti's designs. You see the extra rungs to make it a bit extra and the lovely simple frame. Many Italian versions by other makers, many of them very nice.
At 4:30, the chair is by Charles Eames, designed in 1946, though I doubt it is an original. Herman Miller is just the company that produced them, starting in 1949. It is like calling a Saarinen chair a Knoll.
NOOO HOW DID I MISS THIS. i recently found these two super nice mid century (art deco maybe?) table lamps for $2 each at the Out of the Closet in Glendale. the guy almost didn't sell it to me saying "it has to be a mistake" but last minute was like "eh it's their fault", i ran the f out of there before he changed his mind lmao
Just for clarity, as there are a few bowls shown, I think you are speaking about the live-edged bowl with the cut in the side, which is where one would feed the yarn through, placing the ball inside the bowl.
In the 70s and up to the mid 80s brass was very IN. There were brass beds (often featured on “Love American Style”) large brass planters, and brass trunks that many people used as coffee tables. I’ve always loved the trunks. They’re pretty rare now and usually SO expensive. I thought I’d probably never own one. I recently found a *perfect* vintage 1970s brass trunk in pristine condition. The seller was only the 2nd owner and just a few miles away. She was selling it for next to nothing; I jumped on it immediately!
Paige - you rock! Trolls calling others stupid is very questionable considering the time/energy/brain cells spent on both tuning in and then commenting on said content….things that make you go 🤔
The list of cool shit that I have thrifted is long and varied. I think 75% of my stuff is second hand. Choosing one favourite would be impossible. I can’t wait to watch this video!
Video idea: I would love to see a series about the psychology of how our homes make us feel. For example, how does having a lack of intimate spaces (open concepts rather than smaller rooms) affect our relationship with the space and with our roommates? Does it lead us to feel suffocated from the lack of privacy? A Mina Le sort of video essay would be lovely :)
I got a mahogony roll-top desk by Ethan Allen from Craigslist for 50 bucks- came in very useful during the pandemic and working from home, and it fits perfectly with my English old lady vibes. Thanks, Richard & Susan, the sweet couple I got it from!
Loved that video so much. I think my best find was a pendant light in rhodoïd, which give the same effect as a paper pendant and the same lighting (great alternative, as beautiful).
I have the same Louis Paulson lamp that turned yellow! It used to be my aunts’ and she said it was bright orange when she bought it. You could never tell right now.
I gave my thrifted Escher self portrait in a ball (that used to hang above my toilet for the men folk) to my friend’s son when he went off to college. Always remember the handwriting lizards that hung across the wall from the toilet in my friend’s first apartment in 1975. A captive audience is always key to following the detail.
Audiobooks. That’s how you get back into reading. I have always been an avid reader but have my own business now so I’m a lot busier than I used to be. I listen to audiobooks while I do other things that don’t require brainpower
Such great stuff out there, and such great stories! I would LOVE to see you do a series like 'prop style with me.' You wouldn't even need to narrate much; just put on some background music to lots of different scenes of you styling. Could be your place, other places... You could watch someone styling then give tips to improve and transform their work.
Shoutout to the person with the dining table and chairs for their Salts Diner poster - if anyone is ever in the UK, visit Salts Mill in Saltaire. You will not be disappointed!
I love how we are all like, " I would never buy a new leather chair..." But we all buy new leather shoes, bags and belts! LOL And, eat animal products....myself included!
The cute corner trashcan looks like something you can easily make yourself (or have it made). I used to see these holders for cone filters--you hang it on the wall and it's like a pocket to store your cone filters. There's ceramic ones, wooden ones, etc. I worked very hard making one for myself--I used thin sheets of balsa wood and had to cut it out w a utility knife, glue the pocket on the front, sand the handle to the right shape, etc. Then I painted it. It looks really good, but now we don't use cone filters anymore--wah wah.
*Wood live edge and hand turned Bowls* . These are are my weakness and I love collecting them. I also collect hand carved duck decoys and Wexford cut glass pieces.
maybe of video of things people have fixed up if you haven't already done that? Like a before/after on things people thrift :) my example would be a deer skull that someone painted gold and turquoise. I spray painted it black and it looks very goth and edgy in my home !!!
“I wouldn’t get a new couch, but I’d get a vintage one, because it already happened.” Hahah. I think “it” already happened with a new leather couch, too.
I thrift a LOT.... I got these BEAUTIFUL mid-century lamps a few years back at Salvation Army for, I believe $30 for the two! Y'can't post pics, I believe, so; here's my description: ribbed cream colored rectangular shade, the main part is like a beautiful light aqua glazed ceramic (beginning with an aluminum line) the base is aluminum then wood, they are on Wayfair or something for more than I care to spend (on EACH). PAIGE ROX
I just got back from San Miguel de Allende in Mexico and they had these exact dishes in stores there with different line drawings in the middle of the plate and sold as a set ✨
I live on Cape cod and my town has a “take one leave one” place next to the dump where you can donate and grab stuff free! It’s the best and I’ve found so many amazing things! I’ll have to take pics around my house and email the pics!
I was thinking of submitting some pics of my thrifted item(s) but then as I looked around I had so many and couldn't decide what was the best thrifted thing, cuz in a way, they are all trophies of some kind to me. So I didnt submit but instead I had a nice time looking at my treasures and thinking about what they mean to me.
Do you remember where most of the choice pieces came from? I have a plastic watering can that was 5 cents at a garage sale…I have based my entire 1955 kitchen around that shape. And the lamp that my ex lent me the $12 to buy….never got paid back. Worth easily $200 now.
Rainer Kriester is one of the most important sculptors in the 20th century ;) The Pergamon museum in Berlin, one of the most important museums in occident.
How about thrifting milk glass? I found a fabulous nob milk glass lamp base, from the 40s I think. I love it. And then I got a milk glass vase kinda 50s looking, shape of pineapple sort of.
As a Nordic person, your pronunciation of the Danish name was actually really good for an English speaking person, and you realised right away that the word is literally "export" but with a different spelling. :)
Crazy, I have 4 plates in that exact style, material, glaze, with different images that I picked up at a yard sale in Minneapolis. There were other plates that I did not grab because I just wanted a set of 4, and I wonder if who ever submitted got them from the same place?!
My first apartment had a hallway of windows…no curtains. They were narrow enough for me to use my great aunts embroidered and lace dresser scarves. The walls were white, the window frames were periwinkle and the memory of those beautiful linens blowing in the breeze just makes me feel all warm.
I have a few high school artist pieces. The freshness of young creativity before they go off into the cold cruel world. My sister has a corner in my dining room (the room with no table ironically) where her junior and high school projects are proudly featured. She was truly shocked that I had them framed after 50 years.
I got my giant mid-century Danish teak wall unit for $375 on FB marketplace !!! that has been my “thrift” of a lifetime (sorry Paige I don’t have insta😢)
AH i also found a brutalist spanish sideboard from madrid for $20 that was made for someone out there on military (it has a plaque inside saying made in madrid and all that). i had no idea what some of the features were cause they were using it as a tv console and they titled it a console not a sideboard. but i eventually figured out that the features were for friggin wine glasses and dishes so it's been bugging the hell out of me cause i am using it in my room 😭
Random question, are high beds out? All I ever see are super low beds or like platform beds, is it like super dated to have a really tall bed like our parents had in the 2000’s? Bc the low beds just feel weird to me and I don’t want my dogs crawling all over my bed and I know they would if I had a low one.
i have a high-ish bed from the 1930s cuz i wanna feel fancy and secure. if that makes sense. idk i think it depends on the rest of your style, not what's IN style
I’ve recently come around to thrifting books. I don’t think it ever buy book though just because it looks cute. I’d have to at least be somewhat interested in the content.
I know we had a detailed chat about pronunciation of "curtains" in the chat from another video, but I'm impressed to hear Paige actually saying the "t" in the word. 😂 Small, funny thing! We were all trying to figure out if it was a regional or generational thing. Maybe either or both but then, perhaps, just learning how to say it right! 😂 ❤
I say it without the t being from Texas. But I get it. It infuriates me when people don’t pronounce the g for -ing words. It sound like walkeen, talkeen etc.

I'm jealous! Much more organized and efficient than dumpster diving stuff or just watching for stuff left on curbs.

As a Nordic person, your pronunciation of the Danish name was actually really good for an English speaking person, and you realised right away that the word is literally "export" but with a different spelling. :)
Lmao about the single girl box by the bed! 😢😢😢🎉
you should make this a series
Crazy, I have 4 plates in that exact style, material, glaze, with different images that I picked up at a yard sale in Minneapolis. There were other plates that I did not grab because I just wanted a set of 4, and I wonder if who ever submitted got them from the same place?!
i wonder if the troll likes the attention or not
I have used curtains for table clothes many times.
My first apartment had a hallway of windows…no curtains. They were narrow enough for me to use my great aunts embroidered and lace dresser scarves. The walls were white, the window frames were periwinkle and the memory of those beautiful linens blowing in the breeze just makes me feel all warm.
I theenk you said that "Nordisk Andels-Eksport" right! Pretty sure, not positive, let 'em come for ME! HAHAHA
that "highschool project ceramic plate" looks like a slavic inspired art piece you would find on a winter market!
I have a few high school artist pieces. The freshness of young creativity before they go off into the cold cruel world. My sister has a corner in my dining room (the room with no table ironically) where her junior and high school projects are proudly featured. She was truly shocked that I had them framed after 50 years.
You have a lot of canny & stylish viewers, Paige. Phenomenal!
OMG! I’m so slack! I’m just watching this now and you featured my moca pot!!!!! Squeeeeee
Honoured to be your parasocial friend ❤
Ok but where did you find the wood lamp though?! I always want to know the triumphant origin story.
whoever found the denmark desk... u are gods favorite
Do another! ❤
When are you doing another 'Design Advice for your homes' video! I would looooove to submit :)
I love that she knew I was gonna image search that lamp so I could delete the one I took earlier in the video ❤❤❤
same here 🤭 did you find it? I couldn't!
@ I could not 😩
I love you book collection, fine art😊🎉❤
Have u read "my life would be perfect if i lived in that house" by meghan daum? I feel like u would love it.
I think I saw that corner trash bin in a AD video, I believe it's from a Frank Lloyd Wright home? Maybe my memory is failing me but pretty sure though
leave Paige alone troll!! thanks for your awesome content
I’ve recently come around to thrifting books. I don’t think it ever buy book though just because it looks cute. I’d have to at least be somewhat interested in the content.
I found an 'End of Day' Murano glass vase. Unfortunately she broke this year. (Rip)
That's easy: In 2014 I got a Drexel Declaration full chest of drawers in excellent condition for .... $25
I might need you to tell us where your perfect brown sweater is from
I know we had a detailed chat about pronunciation of "curtains" in the chat from another video, but I'm impressed to hear Paige actually saying the "t" in the word.
@@pegm5937 I think I will find it sad if she doesn’t say “curtains” her original way. It makes me smile every time
Oh hey I thrifted those same barstools! 3 for $75
This was just fun! ❤
{ heads to the comments section to try to find the troll to troll 🏃♀️}
Great video ❤
