Why is Nationalism "My country is better than your country?". I'd say Nationalism was, "My country is my country. I love it. I hope you will love it. You're welcome to visit. Perhaps I can come visit you next year?"
That's patriotism and is what Oliver is talking about. Basically people are defining words differently. Oliver would call what you said as patriotism and would agree it's positive
@@wodenravens Well, this is why post modernism is so crap. They redefine words, then weaponise them against you. Thugs in black shirts and masks call themselves 'anti-fascist' as they beat the crap out of law abiding citizens. You really couldn't make it up. I'm a patriot - and I'm a nationalist. I appreciate you can be both or either.
Identity politics is causing more hate and division then nationalism ever did, they also never talk about left wing nationalism SNP, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Fein.
@Mark Smith Identity politics is a form of nationalism in a way rather then identifying with one's own nation you identify with one's own group and support its interests, but by it's nature you exclude people that are not like you or have your beliefs. LGBT exclude straight people, Feminism excludes Men and so on, this is like identity segregation or identity racism. Communism, Fascism two heads of the same coin.
English or British nationalism is viewed as bad by the left but Irish, Scots and Welsh nationalism get a free pass this is due to the Celtic nations playing the historical victim card and the left always approve of perceived victims.
Sinn Fein Are National Socialists; same party politics as the Nazi's, they kill people that oppose them through their paramilitary wing (IRA). Doesn't help that they sided with and supported the Nazi's during WW2; received weapons from them - they really don't like when you bring up these little bits of history.
@Mark Smith Sinn Fein operations in the North are different from Sinn Fein in the South, I'm from Northern Ireland, so I only refer to Northern Irish politics. Also, we all get taught this stuff in School here, Sinn Fein was supported by the Nazi's, and they are (or at least were for a long time) National Socialists.
@Mark Smith didn't read past the first part of your response, I don't come to TH-cam comments to read lectures. No, you said nationalism is a unifying idea, I merely disagreed and pointed out the parallels between Sinn Fein and the Nazi party, both of which used nationalism as shield for themselves and weapon against others (in both cases, people opposed to their ideology). End point is, Nationalism is a form of identity politics and it CAN be used to divide people. I was responding to your original comment where you seemed to be implying that nationalist causes in general were a good thing, whilst identity politics was a separate bad thing - but maybe I misunderstood.

I have always been a Nationalist, proud of Great Britain and its history, but have never been racist or fascist, in fact, always thought of myself as Liberal, however, I have been caled Fascist and Racist so many times, that why should I not be one. So I support BLM, which stands for British Lives Matter, and Rule Britania should be our National Anthem.
Nationalism was originally a liberal movement. People were mostly ruled by multinational empire and nationalism largely arose to oppose the economic and cultural dominating of provincial peoples by metropolitan centres.
Metropolitan and cosmopolitan centres, that is. National consciousness arose in opposition to centralised control by distant, effectively multinational centres of wealth, power and authority.
It is truly liberal and progressive historically speaking though it has been subverted into irrational forms of jingoism and imperialism along the way.
I heard a Scot recently, his pride of Flower of Scotland, he was moved to tears. We have always known about proud Scots, also proud Welsh and Irish. It would appear that the English/'British' do not have the same luxury. We have magnificent songs.
Speaking as an Irishman living in England, my perception is that there does exist a deeply held patriotism amongst the English people. However, England has institutionalised its MSM, aided by the greater numbers of ethnics living there, its public sector as a whole and how it is managed by Common Purpose groupthink, and manipulated its identity with perverse notions of inclusivity and equality.
It is sad that every conversation these days has to be qualified on a platform of racism, fascism, nationalism, bigotry, historical self-loathing, or whatever other title can ignite a toxic rhetoric. There is nothing wrong with loving where you come from, and that places history and values that make you who you are. I respect the fact that you may have an alternative opinion but, i am English, and proud to call myself English; all i ask is that you show me the same respect.
I would like for Scotland to be separate now after listening to all their noise. I think they should be afforded the ability of movement within UK yet of course as long as they pay. Pay for their own way with zero subsidy from the UK and of course be required to obtain work permits and of course visas for extended stay.
Don’t mix up the SNP/nationalists and Scotland in general. The majority voted to remain in the UK in 2014. The SNP have caused massive division within Scotland and within the UK. It’s toxic.
One thing that we can be certain of regarding the proposed ‘Hate Speech’ Bill in Scotland, and soon to be proposed in Ireland, is that it will never ever be invoked to protect white middle aged men from offence!
The great soprano Jessie Norman gloriously sang on the 'last night of the proms.' Unlike the BBC , she refused to play the victim race card and shared joy, humanity, and songs with the audience.
I'm a ethno nationlist I dont hate other people or think they are any less then us I'm happy to see other people who love there country ,I think its healthy and normal what I dont like is my country turn into somewhere else and that is what is happening .we in this country are white European on the whole let's keep it that way the same way as Africa on the whole are mostly black apart from the north who are lighter and I want to see it remain so .
Never thought much of this guy , I was wrong, seems like an honest man that speaks common sense. I did like Gary lineker , but since hes got involved in politics I have changed my opinion. Hes a good football pundit and it should end there.
Neil Oliver’s opposition is something I have been taught to share. A venerable and much loved Russian bishop Metropolitan Philaret, of whom I was very in awe of, taught children that nationalism was an evil given that by it very nature it sought to exclude, whereas patriotism included all who loved the land of their birth or their adoption or residence. Very frail following his torture by the Japanese during their occupation of Manchuria, he nevertheless was loving and straightforward, without any false sentimentality or inclination to pose.
the last day of the proms celebrates patriotism, by the citizens of this country, with all their diversity. Proud citizens sing Rule Britannia, white, black yellow, green etc. We are all British, and once a year we can all shout to the sky how we love this beautiful country, our home. What the BBC has decided for this year accentuates our difficulties rather than take a chance to bring all citizens together. Shame shame shame
I really like the point that - in Scotland it is wrong to not be nationalistic, and in England it is wrong to be nationalistic - brilliant point Mike. How do the woke explain that one?
We're no more all the same than we are all different. I am not an interchangeable unit of global humanity, I am an Englishman. The salient differences between peoples or ethnicites are the ones which affect loyalty.
If I were in Scotland or England or even Wales I would think of the fact that all are living on the same island, it is all the same land so all the people of that land on the island have being islanders of the same island in common.
A discussion that was profound and productive. Neil got to the heart of the foolishness underlying what the BBC are doing to the Last Night of the Proms. Talking of the BBC, I gave up a good while back on the MSM, but my understanding is that this sort of discussion just wouldn't be available there.
Perfect example of the type of liberal/Marxist fool who imagines they have the intellectual and moral high ground. And proof having a few letters after your name does not cure idiocy.
This is funny but I'm an Irish Republican and love the melody of the song Rule Britannia and am rather jealous we had not thought it up and called it Riail na hÉireann :)
"Exceptionalism - the condition of being different from the norm; also : a theory expounding the exceptionalism especially of a nation or region." Only one empire ever abolished slavery; it was exceptional.
I think the biggest difference in the approach to patriotism in England and Scotland are reflected by the disparity between the amount of immigration into each nation.
Scotland and England. Different human livestock farms belonging to the same corporation. The farmers of each respective country choose slightly different approaches to control and motivate the livestock. It's not rocket-science.
Why don't the media talk about WE BRITISH that was the first country in the WHOLE WORLD!! to ban slavery, yet when I was in the Middle East , OPh Yes!!! slavery is rife in the Africas and Arabias. Let's talk about that!!!

I used to love the whole of the UK now I just can’t visit Scotland it’s clear we’re not welcome. Very sad. Why should I spend my money in a country that is racist and Xenophobic.
So sorry you feel this way. I'm Scottish and I still live in Scotland. I detest the way this part of the UK is going. Trust me the Nationalists are not supported by the majority up here, although, with a disturbingly biased media you would think otherwise. I live in hope that my fellow Scots wake up and see exactly what the Nationalists are all about.... Fascism!!

Agreed I love Scotland and its people just the past 3 times I’ve been I’ve experienced the rank Nationalist.
I blame Krankie and her illiberal bunch of fascists. Let’s just hope the silent majority still exists. 👍🏴🏴🇬🇧
Lol racist how? They're tired of seeing the country sold away to globalist marxists.
Couldn't agree more. Absolute madness!
Just because we love our country and are deeply thankful for it does not mean we hate others. It’s simply a heart of gratitude that finds expression in singing. Great interview! I appreciate Neil Oliver’s perspective. And oh... 99.99% safe from COVID rate to population. Fact.
If the government are not going to protect us we MUST Protect OUR family OUR country
and OUR homes .. CHANGE is needed now on thee rights to own firearms
like in the OLD ENGLISH constitution ..
Widely held by the ethnic communities in the cities and the travelling community in general, as known to the police and the Home Office.
I’m not. Disband the Union. England #1 🏴
Well said Neil👍 just get rid of madam Twanky
Wee Cranky as i see her!
We in GB live on a small island in a big world and an infinite universe and these people who are trying to break us apart and destroy the joy in our love of our small island are despicable.
We may have things in our past that we should not be proud of but we have as a united kingdom given the world so much, a pox on those who choose to try to destroy this.
I am instinctively opposed, to neil oliver
Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau always brings a lump to my throat.
@@drewwilliams6888 As does the hymn Jerusalem to the English, I'm assured.
Well said that man.speaks a lot of sense.👍🏻
Yup - I, myself, personally, am very proud to be Scottish, British, and with ancient Irish ancestry.
The great soprano Jessie Norman gloriously sang on the 'last night of the proms.'
Unlike the BBC , she refused to play the victim race card and shared joy, humanity, and songs with the audience.
Next on their censor list will be the national anthem .
patriotism always
― Johannes Rau
And note the line 'Mother of the free' - and not only did Britain abolish slavery but spent millions policing the his seas to suppress 'The Trade'.
I really like the point that - in Scotland it is wrong to not be nationalistic, and in England it is wrong to be nationalistic - brilliant point Mike. How do the woke explain that one?
People really need to understand that just because you love your home and nation, does not mean that you hate other people or other countries.
His opinion has nothing to do with the fact that his paycheque comes from the BBC. Totally unbiased.
Love Neil!! I tried to get to Scotland this year for the archaeology, but Covid ruined it. I'll be back!!
What a totally top man Neil is. Just speaking simple common sense.
We're no more all the same than we are all different. I am not an interchangeable unit of global humanity, I am an Englishman. The salient differences between peoples or ethnicites are the ones which affect loyalty.
So who's up for taking the SNP to court for offending all the Unionists?
If I were in Scotland or England or even Wales I would think of the fact that all are living on the same island, it is all the same land so all the people of that land on the island have being islanders of the same island in common.
Love you big man let our poeple free
Land of hope and glory...what an evil idea, that !?!?
Patriotism is brilliant so is britain
scottish nationalism isn't bigoted.
Neil Oliver ,we share so ,so much in the UK,Lang may yer lum reek.
"Instinctively opposed to nationalism" sounds like a BBC/EU motto. He must be opposed to the world then. It's full of nations and nationalists.
Exactly. They're all the same, these multicultural citizen of the world, there's only one race the human race snowflake types.
The SNP are they not Nationalist Socialists? By their very name and ideology they have committed themselves!
If Scotland was to become independent we should still share a military alliance to protect the Isles and keep paying the workers to build ships
A discussion that was profound and productive. Neil got to the heart of the foolishness underlying what the BBC are doing to the Last Night of the Proms. Talking of the BBC, I gave up a good while back on the MSM, but my understanding is that this sort of discussion just wouldn't be available there.
Sturgeon is hillarious. She increasingly reminds me of Jim Jones. Ranting at her declining cult.
As we have worked side by side as on military for hundreds of years
Perfect example of the type of liberal/Marxist fool who imagines they have the intellectual and moral high ground.
And proof having a few letters after your name does not cure idiocy.
@Robert Cawleymaybe, but maybe not. Maybe you're the type of smug clown who entertains defunct idea's. Ye liberal's do irony very well.
And what type of fool are you ???
I’m really confused as to why anyone would vote SNP ? Replies are welcome...🇬🇧
This is funny but I'm an Irish Republican and love the melody of the song Rule Britannia and am rather jealous we had not thought it up and called it Riail na hÉireann :)
nationalism vs globalism.....Free England, free Scotland, free Wales, free Norn Ireland
"Exceptionalism - the condition of being different from the norm; also : a theory expounding the exceptionalism especially of a nation or region." Only one empire ever abolished slavery; it was exceptional.
My dad in New Zealand used to play them over and over and loved to share it with joy.
No he’s not he’s just a British nationalist rather than Scottish
I think the biggest difference in the approach to patriotism in England and Scotland are reflected by the disparity between the amount of immigration into each nation.
Scotland and England. Different human livestock farms belonging to the same corporation. The farmers of each respective country choose slightly different approaches to control and motivate the livestock. It's not rocket-science.
just want a land for me and my people. Can't oppress and hurt other people if they too have their own land, right?
Why don't the media talk about WE BRITISH that was the first country in the WHOLE WORLD!! to ban slavery, yet when I was in the Middle East , OPh Yes!!! slavery is rife in the Africas and Arabias. Let's talk about that!!!
