    I once stopped for a pedestrian on a narrow 2 lane city road and behind my truck, as the pedestrian was crossing, a car started to go around me. I immediately honked my horn to warn the pedestrian and pulled left into the next lane enough to block the car. It just happens the car was a cop car (no emergency lights or siren) and boy was the officer mad, but he had not seen the guy crossing in front of me. He ended up getting an ear full from the pedestrian who was pissed off that a cop would have hit him if he had gone past my truck. At least the cop was man enough that when he realized what had happend, he apologized to both of us and we all went our separate ways. This is why that on small city streets, when I stop for people crossing, I always stop with plenty of room to be able to block people trying to go around when the pedestrian(s) are crossing. I have a big truck.

      I live in Europe and although I stop as a rule, a few times I have decided not to stop because of the other heavy traffic behind me: I was afraid I would endanger the pedestrians by enabling them to cross the road... Sad.

      @James Stewart You can't expect a cop to be omniscient and the law doesn't either. He's only required to be reasonable and passing a stopped vehicle is reasonable. If a truck is big enough that it blocks someone's view, you cannot expect them to know what's going on ahead...
      The cop did the right thing once he knew, unlike many people.

    I'm from the Netherlands and what strikes me is how wide the streets are in the US in comparison to the Netherlands. At the pedestrian crossing our streets are also divided into multiple sections so you don't have to cross all the way at once.

    • @BrokenCurtain
      @BrokenCurtain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's also a recent development, btw.: there were massive protests in the 1970s because the streets were overtaken by cars, so the Dutch demanded change.
      There's a channel here on TH-cam that talks about the differences in urban planning between the USA and the Netherlands: "Not Just Bikes".
      Basically, the USA has been designed for cars since the 1950s while the Netherlands focussed on making their streets safe for children to use.

    • @martinXY
      @martinXY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Especially with 6 lanes of traffic to contend with. Here in Oz, we have some pedestrian crossings that are across multiple lanes on busy roads (like this one) controlled by the pedestrian in which a push of the button will give the traffic a red light so the pedestrian can move to a traffic island where another button will stop traffic coming the other way. This way the pedestrian can cross safely - since they are actual red lights for the cars - and also you don't end up with 4 or 6 lanes of traffic stopped all at once, just 2 or 3 lanes at a time.

    I remembered trying to cross a „crosswalk“ in the US once. Even after pushing this button for a flash warning no one reason stopped, it was such a hassle crossing that street. I think the problem that no one really stops for pedestrians is because American cities are built just for the car and they aren‘t walkable at all. Plus, infrastructure is so carcentric that of course some paint won’t stop anyone. In my city in Europe, walking is the most used mode of transportation (around 30% of overall traffic), because of walkable neighborhoods, parks and pedestrianized streets and an overall density. Some cities even have 50% foot traffic. If the US wants to stop it’s cities from becoming financially insolvent, drowning in car traffic and being highly excluding and neglecting of the poor, they need to tear down their freeways, allow and encourage other types of housing like mid-rised building blocks and mixed used areas and redistibute public space to people walking, cycling and taking public transit.

      40% of US pedestrians aged 21-65 killed by cars had alcohol in their blood, that was year a few years ago when I checked. (And like a fourth of the driver's did also)
      That being said, when I grew up in that state, nobody stopped for pedestrians. I obviously looked both ways, etc. I crossed streets all the time and would have to wait for streams of cars oblivious to the 4ft kid trying to get on his way. Nationwide pedestrian death per capita was higher in the 80s, as was violent crime. Lots of stats improved greatly starting in 1991 when HTML & WWW came out and young adults brain damaged by lead were finally coming down after decades. "The good 'ol days" they were not. Luckily, I moved to a state that's not shitty and everyone lets me and my dog cross at every crosswalk every day. We have traffic laws because this isn't a third-world country. You stop at red lights, you don't just look both ways and go. I've lived in a country in which everyone was on their own. Red lights were only a suggestion, when they even existed. Pedestrians were not safe. It's not the way I want to see the US become.

Many municipalities have crosswalks which allow you to push a button to activate visual hazard lights when a pedestrian needs to cross. This works great in areas with low pedestrian crossings. Why are people putting blame on pedestrians when there’s plenty of options to keep everyone safe? Is the little bit of extra money not worth it to save lives at crosswalks?

    Unless the intersection has traffic lights, the pedestrian has the right of way. That's how it works here in Sweden. However, you should always be aware anway, as there are complete morons in traffic here too.
    Once when I was about to cross the street at a pedestrian crossing, I heard and saw in the corner of my eye, that literally when I had taken my first step into the street, a young fellow hit the gas to speed up so that he could pass me on his lane before I reached it. He reckoned I'd stop in the middle of the road to let him through, but I challenged him and forced him to break hard and come to a full stop - and boy was he pissed. Honking angrily, yelling and swearing and waving that middle finger all over the place.
    I just told him; if you wanna talk about it, get out of the car - otherwise, just buzz off. He left. The fact that I was nearly double his size may or may not have persuaded him not to try anything.
    To make it clear; I would never throw the first punch, but he didn't know that. I'd just give him a bit of a scare. Hopefully, he learned something.

    For comparison the rules in Germany (where people actually walk…) and similar in most of Europe:
    * drivers are ALWAYS at least 50% responsible when hitting a pedestrian; 100%, when there is any realistic chance, the collision could have been avoided.
    * zebra crossings much not be used on streets with more than one lane per direction or traffic faster that 50 kph (30 mph) is allowed; in this case a traffic light much be installed (and yes, this quite often is every 300 meters/1000 feet).
    * all vehicles much yield to pedestrians, who may want to cross at a zebra crossing. No overtaking around such at any given time.
    * any spot with a stop or yield sign creates an automatic "virtual crosswalk" with the same rules.
    * pedestrians may also cross at any other place they want, when they can find a gap in traffic. Drivers are still required to stop if possible. If crossing is to dangerous, a physical barrier is needed.
    So the ONLY thing a pedestrian is legally required to do is give drivers a chance to stop. And not walk over a red light (which may cost 5€ or far more likely somebody jelling "bad example for children!"). Any other responsibility is on the drivers, because those are legally "trained professionals" (that's why they need a "licence" to drive!).
    Oh, and a design where the median island continues on the left of the crossing is basically the norm.

If someone set out to make a dangerous road crossing that drivers would ignore, this video is exactly what they would make. Traffic engineers have come up with solutions to these problems, and it's not handing out tickets.
      Here's some useful info I found out there:

    This is all part of the dominance the car on the US road system, there just isn’t the expectation that a pedestrian has right of way and they are a lesser being for walking anyway. There doesn’t seem to be a solid convention for crosswalks anyway (happy to enlightened otherwise), seems a bit harsh to entirely blame the motorists in that environment. That’s seeing it from a UK perspective, would be interested to hear if anyone from the US can shed more light. I found crosswalks and 4 way stops the strangest things when driving in the US, everything else was easy, despite driving on the wrong side😂

    You don't need a "grant" for this. This is normal police work that is already funded by tax dollars. Do your job without expecting additional compensation.

    It happens in small towns as well. I live in a Village in Michigan. Try using a walker to cross at a 4 way stop! I have been almost hit 4 times and clipped once, why? Because these people do a "rolling" stop whilst on their cell phones. Then, they bitch at me because I am holding them up!! When I was using a cane to walk. I made sure no cars were stopped or coming. The closest car was 3 lengths from the stop sign, and they just went through it, while looking towards the Bay, away from me, my elbow clipped their side mirror, but the candle took out the rear passenger window. The State Trooper behind them cited them for running a stop sign, failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, bodily harm to pedestrian, distracted driving, (on cell). Driver went to jail, passenger could not drive, no license, so the vehicle was towed. These idiots get what they deserve.

    I have a suggestion. Why not put up a traffic light at the crossing? Then cars would surely stop when they had to.

    • @katwebster1986
      @katwebster1986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may or may not help, as many will accelerate to "beat" the light, but would be worth looking into.
      Getting traffic lights placed in the US is extremely difficult. There's an intersection that has roads entering at an angle, hard to see around, and the road commission told us "we just don't have enough fatalities to justify placing a light there". 😳 I'd have thought 5 fatalities in 10 years and >10 MVC every summer would be enough

      @@katwebster1986 I know the mentality. My town is the same way about traffic lights. A couple of years ago they put one up on one of the main roads in the area, and it was the talk of the town for months on end.

    2:03 There's nothing wrong with that in my country.
    The definition of "yielding" here is not to obstruct a road user (force him to change his path or speed) who has priority.
    In this case, the pedestrian kept walking as he did before when the car drove by.

    In Ireland we have a crossing that's Known as a Zebra crossing at and on the kerb there are "Flashing amber lights" we've had them since the 1960's when any pedestrian places a foot on to the road that person owns that and no vehicle is allowed to drive through or a fine will be issued with modern technology it's easier with number plate recognition
