1980s My Little Pony Vintage Toy Restoration - G1 Merry Go Round Fakie Retro Toy Repair

- This poor little pony had seen better days. Rescued from a bin of toys condemned to the trash, I thought I could give it a second chance. This was my first (recorded) vintage toy restoration.
The pony is a fakie, a My Little Pony-inspired toy that resembles the Merry Go Round collection. It might have been cast from an original pony but the 'artist' took some liberties: The tassels were removed and the mount simplified. The colors were... well, a little louder than its siblings. I wanted to keep the repair as close to the original as possible, so I re-painted using the same color scheme and chose the closest hair color I could find.

Fakies deserve love too :) This was my first restoration, looking back I would have probably left the original paint but I was learning. I hope I can do another fakie soon. Good luck with yours!

@@Funnii_666 Hi there, no worries! If the paint is in good condition, because these toys are quite old and there aren't many of them, people prefer to keep as much of the original as possible. Because once you remove the paint, it's gone forever. You can't turn back. I personally feel that new paint and hair can bring the toy "back to life". Especially in this case, when it's not a particularly valuable pony. But there are ponies that cost hundreds of dollars and collectors prefer to have them look original - even if they look "old". It's a personal choice but you always need to keep in mind that you can't go back once you remove the paint or the hair :) What do you think? Do you prefer new paint?
@@RetroGeekCrafts I'm new to the hobby so I apologize if I ask any dumb questions. What makes certain ponies particularly valuable? Is it the rarity, or are there some designs that people like more? Btw the pony with sculpted flowers who made an appearance is beautiful.

I found this one in Argentina years ago, and for a long time I thought it was originally from there. Turns out it's European! I don't think there are many for sale (cause very few people know their name, they are Pretty Ponies I think) but you can ask in a FB group called My Little Phonie!

due to my adhd i get extremely obsessive over one subject for a (usually short) period of time. i watched one. ONE. of your videos earlier today and i’ve already watched about 6-7. i’ve always loved toy restoration or customization videos, but for some reason your account is one that im completely obsessed with. maybe it’s because there’s no side conversation and it allows me to focus on just the pony. either way, thank you for these videos! it does help calm me down in a way too ^_^

Oh, I had that purple one with a saddle. Sold it years ago with a blue glitter pony and another purple one with out a saddle.

I'm confused. I know it is a fake but it looks like a Hasbro molded pony. Did bootleggers get their hands on the molds that Hasbro used? What did the copyright on the bottom of the hooves say?
I was fascinated by this "Pretty Pony" (that seems to have been the official name) fakie. It looks to me like they used a cast of an original Merry go Round pony but made some changes to it. The details are not as sharp, so I don't think they had an original mold. They manually removed the tassels, it seems. The hooves don't say anything, they must have covered them. I believe this range might have been released in Scandinavia, I talked to someone rom Norway who had a few.

@@RetroGeekCrafts I totally get it, the goal is to respect the originality of the toys, and you are doing an excellent job at restoring and making them look brand new! I just feel hasbro was kinda stingy with the amount of hair, I think they would look so much glorious with double the hair lol have you ever thought about making your own versions? Like more high end or even your own ponies? That would be really fun and the possibilities and themes are endless! You could even have a little store! How often does your rerooting needle snap? I go through so many when i customize dolls
Miraculously, it snapped once in the middle while I was doing the first pony (I didn't use the puncher first to make a hole) and never again. I've been using the same needle since I started the channel. I think it's made of either Wolverine's adamantium or Wakandan vibranium! 😂

I think this one is Brilliant Blossoms (blue body, yellow hair). Bosenberry Pie is purple, but she's from the same "Merry go Round" ponies collection ☺️ I have three, I would love to complete the set some day!

Hola Jenifer. Algunas personan los donan, otros los hago por comisión. Si el pony es raro a veces hago restauraciones solo por costo del envio. El "problema" es que vivo en Inglaterra. Tenés un pony que necesita ayuda?
si tengo un pony se llama peachy pero tiene los ojos borrados con acetona y el pelo horrible y por el momento no tengo dimero para hacer el envio

Yes, they are. But they have their own following because, at least where I'm from, Hasbro ponies were really expensive. People have lovely memories of them too, so I welcome them all :)

This is a bootleg Pony, a copy of the Hasbro Merry Go Round ponies. The brand is My Sweet pony, I believe. There are at least 4 different colors, they seem to have been fairly popular in Europe.

yo tambien tengo este poni se lo regalaron a mi hermana cuando nacio ya tiene 34 años y el pobre el cuerpo esta limpio pero el pelo esta peor que este esta casi calvo tambien tengo guardada la cabecita de otro similar a este pero mas pequeño no se que le paso al cuerpo
Que suerte!! Son muy difíciles de conseguir! El pelo se ve que no era de la mejor calidad, de los que vi online, ninguno lo tenia bien ya. Por eso se lo cambie, aunque hay gente que prefiere siempre dejar el original. Lo unico, si lo hiciese de nuevo usaría pelo de vinilo, no acrílico (de extensiones) como use acá. El tuyo es el mismo modelo que este?

She is. The Hasbro ones are called Merry Go Round, this one is a Pretty Pony. It's made from a cast of an official one, but it's got some parts modified. For example, it's missing several tassels. There were a few of the same mould, with different hair color. They are very good quality, but still fakies :)
