    Bravo! As an italian, hai dato giustizia a questa fantastica corazzata ed ai caduti del Roma, un lavoro magistrale. Complimenti.

    As someone who built a few ships myself, I can really appreciate insane amount of work that went into this. Your painting skills are really good, the disruptive camo on such challenging surface came out pretty well and even those typically Italian red/white identification stripes that quite often give a lot of trouble to even experienced modelers, because of rough surface look really good. It remained me how difficult was to put disruptive camo on USS Iowa I've built recently and this superstructure is even more complicated than on Iowas. Well done, sir!

      The recognition stripes were a pain. The first time I painted them I used an enlarged copy of the painting guide to mark the lines on the deck. After painting them I stepped away from the model and noticed that they were skew. The lines in the painting guide are not parallel to each other! I had to repaint the all the stripes.

      Thanks! This was by far the most difficult of my models to paint. The shape and extent of the superstructure combined with the camouflage pattern made it very tricky.

    Great video! Would love to see a video on a guide to painting disruptive camouflage on ships. Roma turned out beautiful

      Thanks! In the Roma build series I paint the disruptive camouflage on the superstructure in videos 2 to 4:

    This is a wonderful model, and it has been a pleasure to watch the progress over the past (almost) 2 years. Congratulations on the beautiful build. I was wondering what techniques you used to weather the wooden deck replacement (if any), as well as the assembly of the winches on deck. Regardless, this is an amazing and very lifelike build.

    • @DavidsShips
      @DavidsShips  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The wooden deck is not weathered. I have not thought about how I would go about weathering it, but I would guess that weathering powders would be the best way to go.
      As for the winches, are you referring to the cable spools? If so you can see me build them in this video:

    Wonderful - beautiful work which I can only aspire to. Can you tell me where alll the life rafts came from?

    If they had to fire the rear guns at 6 o'clock the shockwave would have instantly destroyed the hydroplanes. This is why on the German ships the hydroplanes were always tucked in between the funnel and the rear conning tower, to shield them from the big guns' blasts.

      There is also an interesting story like this for the Yamato. When the Yamato fired its main battery the overpressure would severely injure, possibly kill, anyone not in cover. This meant that the AA gunners would have to remove delicate equipment and seek shelter before the main battery fired.
      What makes the situation even more strange is that the main battery could fire airburst shells and be used as super-heavy AA. But, if the main battery was used as AA then a lot of the light AA would have to stop firing every time the main battery fired.
      Moving to the absurd. Pilots who experienced AA fire from Yamato's main battery said they were easy to predict and avoid. They didn't create much of a deterrence.
      So you have the scenario where in a desperate situation Yamato would use its main battery to fire ineffective AA shells but to do that would have to disrupt firing light AA guns that were more effective.
      Battleships are crazy. That is why I like them.

    Stunning job! Question... What color did u use to paint the hull? Thanks

    • @DavidsShips
      @DavidsShips  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is a mixture of Tamiya XF-5 and XF-2. I was trying to match the colour of Humbrol Enamel Matt 101. You can see the video on that here: th-cam.com/video/KjMFwVvBU6s/w-d-xo.html

    Hi David,
    I am going to start this kit and I had some doubts about paints.
    May I ask you which paints you used to get this marvelous camo?
    thank you very much

      These are the paints:
      Light grey: 1 to 1 Tamiya XF-2 and XF-19
      Dark grey: Tamiya XF-24
      Deck: Tamiya XF-54
      Lower hull: Humbrol enamel 101 (I mixed Tamiya paints to match the colour)

      Ciao David, thank you for your prompt reply.
      I remember your hull video to get the colors i have to mix for it.
      It’s a real pity you did not post fore deck painting, but all the playlist is really full of hints and ideas.
      Thank you
      Marco

      It is a pity. I started building the Roma kit before I started the channel.
      To paint the recognition markings I scanned in the painting guide, enlarged it, and printed it in the same scale as the model. I then placed it on the deck and used it to precisely mark the stripes.
      After painting the stripes I discovered that the stripes on the Trumpeter painting guide are not parallel! It looked really bad on the ship. It took a bit of tweaking on the model to get them straight.
      I think that is the only thing to look out for with the recognition markings.
