Hi Sorry Just got this kit to make as I served on 4 of the Australian FFG, and noticed the funnel assembly is backward, but looks great. The rudder offset also allowed the shaft to be removed without having to remove the rudder. Definitely needs the etched parts
VERY nice build - I flew off a good half dozen of the West Coast Fg's back in the 80s and 90s as an SH-60B crewman. YES, the reason for the rudder offset is to allow the shaft to be pulled without removing the rudder (USS Rueben James - FFG-57 bent her shaft on a tug-line while I was aboard, and had to have it replaced). I HOPE to get this kit someday - add the LAMPS MkIII "stuff" - the aircraft, RAST, LSO station, and all the junk in the hangar.
I'm returning to model making after a long hiatus. My first project? A Perry-class. Thanks for the info!
USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) "Sammy-B", NO HIGHER HONOR 🇺🇸 ⚓
This is a spectacular 1/350 scale model of the Oliver Hazard Perry. I plan to build her sister, Rodney M. Davis.
I also like that touch of the open hatch on the port side of the bridge, it makes it seem more convincing, and life like.
Great work all around.
Thank you Christopher!
My understanding of the offset rudder was that it was set 18 inches to the starboard to give smooth turning radius. If the rudder was dead center, parts of the rudder would be in a turbulent cavitation zone from the propeller. by offsetting the rudder, it was able to move more water and thus turn better.
Luar biasa 👍👍👍👍 biasa di luar. Mau beli tempe dulu ya. Soalnya persediaan tempe di kulkas habis.
Wonderful build! I am finishing up an Arleigh Burke Flight II and then going to start on a Perry. I love your videos, especially your builds. It helps me to figure out the best way to go about building and painting. Keep up the great work, your models are wonderful and the videos help out a lot for us newbies to the hobby.
Wow, thanks Dustine!!
Beautiful work mate looks bloody awesome till next time have a good one
@JJ Model Making: Your completed model looks great! I've been considering these kits since I spent nearly 4 years aboard one of these ships. There are minor build differences between hulls, and updates over time that the model kit doesn't account for. One example is the stepped-stern. The original plans were drafted for SH-2 Seasprite helicopters. Later hulls were extended by ~8 feet and featured a "stepped down" stern area for the rear capstan, thereby allowing clearance for the larger SH-60 Seahawk helicopter to clear the tail rotor. Not all hulls were updated to reflect this change.
Probably in the late 90s or early 2000s the surviving hulls were outfitted with a slewing-arm davit instead of the slip/slope whatever assembly on the portside boat deck. It's these little changes that keep me from purchasing one of these kits, as it wouldn't accurately reflect "my" ship.
Some more info on frigates for improved accuracy:
No model ever comes with them, but FFGs have active stabilizing fins amidships, slightly forward of the quarterdeck. They can be seen clearly in some of the drydock photos here www.navybook.com/no-higher-honor/timeline/ffg-58-under-repair-at-bath-iron-works/
Also, as you stated in your video, the rudder is offset to starboard, but the screw comes apart in at least 6 major assemblies. Each of the blades can be removed individually from the hub, which houses pitch-control hydraulic equipment. They're quite interesting ships despite their lowly status.
The "rigging" that you created with fine thread is a pair of HF (high frequency) radio antennas. The thread was a good solution, but note that the bottom ends all come together at a single anchor point, a pylon just off the superstructure.
Beautiful build and a great vid.
I worked as a shipfitter @ Todd Shipyard Seattle on the FFG project between 1978 and 1983 .
I'm doing mine differently as well, I am only using one hanger door to show both Seahawks.
Great work!
Thanks Alex, I am still chuffed to bits that you are watching my little channel!
@@JJModelMaking 👍👍💪
The real ship had 2 triple torpedo tube mounts. The kit provides them, but the instructions do not call for them to be added. And you did not include them. Your thoughts?
Can't honestly remember. Probably I just followed the instructions
Great video as always even the inclusion of the extra PE paper clip 😉
This looks awesome!
Great build and summary James. Always impressed with the quality of your work. Best of luck with the Amazon page. I know I'll be using it 😁
Thanks Charles! If there is a specific kit you are looking for and can't find on my Amazon shop, let me know and I'll add it.
Great upload! This will help me when i get around to building my own Perry just sittning in the shelf. Problem is i tend To buy kits faster than i build them 😁
Thanks Fredrik, I really enjoyed this kit! And I know what you mean about buying them!
Awesome build
It is sad that most of the Oliver Hazard Perry class had been scrapped (including the main ship), sunken as targets, or had been sold to be back in service (witch is good that some of them are still in service except that they are in different countries)
But still a great build
Thanks Noelle!
@@JJModelMaking so this model doesnt have hand raillings and stern nets included?
@@roaringcat14 correct
When and how(AB or Brush) did you paint the decks of the Superstructure? and When did you put on the railings (are they painted with the deck or the vertical walls? I have a horrible time with the sequence of building ships!! If I paint to early, the glue does not hold and screws up my paints.
I started this same kit. Have all sub assemblies done and ... Stoped... Don t know why! Are you going to Change the propeller?
Great work but you seem to have put the funnel on back to front. I served on HMAS Adelaide which was the first of the six Australian ships of this class. I am about 3/4 to completing the Adelaide. The kit as sold here has Decals for all the Australian ships. Again great work.
Thanks John, and you are absolutely right! I am a plonker!
great video, may i ask if you painted the deck or haul when initially spraying the gray
I can't honestly remember! Think I painted the deck, masked it off then painted the hull
nice model but the smoke stack is backwards.
How do you layout and paint the waterline?
A combination of reference photos and then masking tape applied by eye
Nice work. You should built the HMS Daring from airfix it’s a really nice boat also
I'm always on the look out for one but they are hideously expensive at the moment here in the UK. It's not worth paying £55 for from what I've seen! If you see a cheap one somewhere, let me know!?
JJ Model Making I will
I wonder if anyone has actually modeled the later OHP versions that had the extended aft section? Also, I noticed that the torpedo tubes are missing. Sorry to nit-pic, but its what happens when an old salt FFG sailor like myself see's things that arent quite right (as mentioned before, the funnel is backwards). Prior STG3 Boebel, USS Klakring, FFG-42...Finest Greyhound in the fleet!
I just recieved my kit. To be honest, Im a bit itimidated. I am a amature builder, and I didnt realize there would be so many small parts, but I think I can get this one done. My question is, what excatly do you use for the rigging rope? Any tips on painting would be appreciated.
Does anyone know of a good place to buy photo etched besides Eduard? The ship on Amazon is only $32 yet the photo etched is $40 on Eduard. Looking for a cheaper option, but if Eduard has better quality then I will consider that over a cheaper option.
The chilean navy operate the two made in australia 05 06 Sold of in 2018 i worked as a welder on 05 06 in the 80,s some of them built out of the usa are still sailing .
Wonder why they wouldn't offset the Rutter from factory
How you keep it dust free
Nice
Do you have to buy the photoetch separately
Yes, it is about $40 on Amazon or eBay
what photo etch kit did you use?
White Ensign models, something like this. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352908073516
It's the ship from Red October!
No that's the Reuben James
@@jonfast16 i only recognized the class from memory, I wouldn't know the exaaaact ship used for filming.
Is this model worth it and how about the quality?
I'd say so yes, it's a relatively cheap model and you can jazz it up with photoetch. A good first ship model to get stuck into
@@JJModelMaking in Italy the price is around 30/35€. Thanks for your reply!
Please try to start work again on the uss wasp
Hi Levin, I'm going to build the Spitfire next that Airfix sent me and then onto the Wasp. And spoiler alert, I've already started the airwing
Oh ok thank you
been following your modelling brilliance for quite some time now . . . I don't have the skill of making model warships & model aircraft . . . would you be interested to undertake paid projects? I'd like you to build me a fleet of modern warships over a period of a year or two . . . for e.g. model of the USS Wasp LHD but without the diorama & Oliver Hazard Perry class guided frigates . . . if possible, please advise . . .
Oh... Only now Saw that yes .. you changed it...
Mk13 launcher aka one armed bandit
no is ffg 7 is class frigate
My go at this kit was pretty dismal to say the least and since I did it I have much more experience.
What I’m going to in the near future is get it back the shipyard and rip off all the crappy hand railing as I have accumulated enough PE to replace it with.
