    Those "flubs" are signs of a musician giving 110 percent and trying to play beyond themselves. Having been around Jackie, I noticed when he played and when his peers played, they gave everything at all times. In many cases they were competitive with each other about it. In a healthy way. However the general vibe was that their art was very serious business.

      no doubt, and i'm not trying to suggest that the playing style wasn't fully intentional, just trying to represent it relative to Morgan's work elsewhere. I'm certainly happy to be able to hear this amazing music in this format

      Totally agree. For me "safe playing" in jazz can be a bit boring. I'd much rather hear a musician going for it, stretching and testing themselves. Lee never played "safe" ...that was inherent to his art.

    Always wonderful and informative videos! This album has become one of my new favorites - it’s just so damn good.

    as much as people say the original lt series covers suck.. they are the only covers i've known and I love them and the music.. so glad with the tone poets redoing em

    The Procrastinator is among my favorite Lee Morgan albums ever, much less one perfectly due for the TP treatment!

    I looove the title track. The attitude is amazing, i dont notice the little details you mentioned 👊

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's great! And honestly I probably shouldn't focus on some of these little details, but I often try and look for things that help distinguish one recording from another. When I'm listening recreationally, rest assured I'm sitting back and enjoying myself more than critiquing!

    Lee Morgan was something else - if you don't have Search for The New World - get it (IMHO it's his best ) - Essential ! Also the Documentary on him is a MUST watch - fascinating story !

    Loved the session, and artists taking chances. Not a musician, just jazz fan. Especially, Lee Morgan.

    One can literally hear the passion you put into characterizing the playing as one being familiar with it. Hard to beat your expertise on all that jazz. Ilearn any second. Thanks so much. Klaus from Germamy

    I have the Rajah LP when if first came out as one of those DMM LPs from the 80s. Sounds great, but I never heard the Tone Poet version.

    Thanks for this awesome in-depth review! This is one of the only LM sessions I have yet to hear and strangely enough I have resisted the temptation to pick it up yet, but your review got me intrigued. I absolutely love McLean and a harsh Morgan sounds attractive to me, so I guess I have no choice but to pull the trigger!

    an interesting album.... fairly tight group with certainly the edge you mentioned. Not Lee's best as far as I am concerned but who know how he was feeing, what was going on that day etc. These top flight musicians reflected their lives . I would be great if Lee was able to let us know these details, but perhaps not knowing makes this music even more interesting.
    Great reviews as always... your reviews along with one or two others in the VC is why I stay away from reviewing these recordings in my videos.. I could not top, add and bring more interest to a review than you did here.
    Thanks you!!!!-- I'd love to do a video with you sometime... JG

    Excellent review! Did some online listening before hand and wasn't too excited I must say. Your review kind of touches the same points that made me decide not to buy it because it will get shelved here too after one listen. Certainly not bad at all but with this one I can see why Blue Note decided not to release it contrary to let's say The Procrastinator and Tom cat which for me rank as some of the best stuff Lee has done for Blue Note in the 60s.

    Thanks for the in depth review. I started listening to the title track a couple of days ago and something about it just hit my ears wrong. There was a tone that felt harsh and almost flat to my ears. I love Lee Morgan and will give this one another listen, but it might just not be for me.

    I read that during this period when Lee was doing a lot of drugs, Blue Note loved him and wanted to keep recording him as much as possible to get funds to him and keep him in some kind of activity and a good place. Not always with the idea of releasing them, just to have him play and keep him alive and well, your sidewinder/hit observation notwithstanding which I agree changed BN a little for the worse for a while as they wanted a 'sidewinder' on everyone's LP for a few years due to how much money that tune made BN.

      Have not read that but it sounds like something Alfred & Francis would do.

    Combine the fact that so much was shelved that was abolute gold and being a completist makes being objectionable tough lol.

    “No recording is perfect”. I’d like to submit Louis Armstrong’s Basin Street Blues and Cannonball Adderley’s Dancing in the Dark.

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha touché. In fact, it sounds like a topic for another video. I might nominate the entire album - Ella and Louis

    • @lukedermott1589
      @lukedermott1589 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jazzvinylcollector yeah I was thinking that would be a great video topic. See what Jazz lovers think is the “perfect” recording/solo etc. While I’m at it I’ll throw in Johnny Griffin’s That Party Upstairs. Raw perfection. Wish it was better recorded.

    Whats the framed piece over your left shoulder? With the BN label?

  • @itsvladzino3246
    @itsvladzino3246 ปีที่แล้ว

    Again strong albums released in top notch fashion, complete with Staughton jackets, whilst the classic BN gems keep on getting the cheap 80’s jacket treatment. Makes no sense - but hey, at least the vinyl is great on both series. Time to merge the re-issues and stop the classic/Tone Poet artificial separation!

      thank you! I'm not trying to represent the music in a negative way, just describing it relative to maybe other recordings Morgan plays on. I'm still of the opinion that all Morgan is good Morgan!
