Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) joins us this week for a humble and grounded conversation about the rise in his career from indie movie hits to massive blockbusters, all the while trying to mitigate the ‘black dog’ of depression following him.
Simon talks about his brotherhood with Nick Frost, how they drop everything to have each others back, and the origins of Three Flavours Cornetto.
We also talk about the Tom Cruise effect while filming, going from class clown to actor, and his most valuable acting advice from Jeff Bridges.

SIMON PEGG: Mitigating the ‘Black Dog’, The Tom Cruise Effect & Shaun of the Dead Brotherhood #insideofyou #simonpegg
"Never meet your heroes, unless your hero is Simon Pegg." - Jack Quaid
Or the boys from RLM apparently.
@@karlkarlos3545 Rich Evans is still a bigger star though!
It truly warms my heart that Simon and Nick are really the best of friends.
Hot Fuzz is one of the most brilliant moves with all of the subtle humor, movie references and each character is clearly defined.
Simon Pegg getting Timothy Dalton to play the main bad guy in Hot Fuzz is the best. That film to this day is just hilarious and the heavy weights with the English actors he got is quite impressive.
It would be an interesting budget if it was filmed today with those stars.
Also the James Bond connections with Pierce Brosnan playing one of the 'blanks' in World's End!
The greater good
@@PiliHalliwell SHUT IT!! :P
hahaha that's exactly what I thought when I saw it. Jim Broadbent, Tim Dalton, Bill Nighy, those guys are never bad ever
Don't sell yourself short Michael. Your interviews are always insightful and entertaining.
I hope you're on the mend following your surgery.
so glad i found your interviews. they aren't the typical interviews you find everywhere else. keep up the great work. Simon Pegg is a legend to me. he's put in the work and has proven his range. so humble and amazing. hope to meet him one day.
Shawn of the Dead...Greatest zombie movie EVER!
It’s great but it’s no Return of the living dead
You got red on you ;)
We're not using the Z-word!
Romero's Dawn Of The Dead is the greatest zombie movie ever.
@felyxmillicent6538 I concur. Only recently discovered how many different versions/edits there are. Have you seen the various cuts? Which is your favourite?
Great interview! I love Simon Pegg. I hope you are recovering well Michael.
"Just growl... And hug me"
Words to live by.
Excellent interview... * Switches off phone, digs Spaced boxset out of cabinet, inserts DVD 1 and presses play *
My fingers are itching towards my Spaced boxset right now, too. 😂
@@MelissaGarrett1980 Ironically, I'm actually flat hunting at the moment after recently splitting with a girlfriend... I thought watching an old favourite would take my mind off it until the cafe scene in Ep 1 "Spacious 2 bedroom apartment, fully furnished, £90 a week".
Couldn't get a wendy house for that these days!!
There are few things in life more beautiful and soothing than Simon Pegg's voice!
Always remember that Spaced was written by Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson. She usually gets forgotten.
Yes she's gone on to do great things, 😂😂😂😊😊😊
Thank you Rosenbaum. I enjoyed being inside of Simon Pegg. Well played.
I'm not a fan of zombie movies but "Shaun of the Dead" is AWESOME! I'm a big Simon Pegg fan and love "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End"!
Michael, you called Simon a delight (which, of course, he is). But you are too. I love your podcast, and it means so much to me when you sincerely discuss these human issues (as you did with Simon re anxiety) which so many of us can relate to. It makes us all feel closer.
Very very best to you.
Adam (UK)
Great interview. Simon and Nick seem like real sweethearts. Willing to go deep and still able to keep it light. Keep them coming Rosey!
Michael, you are a master interviewer. You definately get "inside" of your guests. I also want to say I am 73 and a huge smallville fan. Watched the series multiple times. I said the first time I watched it years ago and was not familiar with you that your performance as Lex was academy award worthy. I hope your viewers are aware how good of an actor you are. Glad the surgey went well. Big fan of the podcast.
How can you not like this guy? An hour with him feels like a minute, may he and Nick Frost never take their wonderful friendship for granted - even if Nick becomes his girlfriend one day😄 It's always fun to hear you guys talking about Carrie Fisher (and Chewacca, how dare you speak like a human ? 🤣). Take care of yourself Michael, let's hope this upcoming surgery gives you some relief 🙏
Simon's autobiography is the best memoir I've ever read and I've read a ton of them . Thank you Simon for letting Lex deep inside of you. I mean Michael.
The Pegg man as a guest this is going to be funny, witty, dry humor and serious. He can do it all.
I watched SOTD so many times I became immune to the swearing and gore.
At a Church lock-in (slumber party in a church), we got to bring movies to watch, I brought SOTD, and the room was uncomfortable after the C word was dropped 5 minutes in, people starting going to bed when Shaun's flatmate gives his "it's 4 in the f*cking morning!" monologue
I am highly enjoying listening to this podcast. Simon is a sci fi legend. We definitely need a part 2.
The first thing I ever saw Simon in was Shaun of the Dead, and I've loved him and Nick ever since. Simon seems like a truly wonderful guy, and I hope to meet him someday. Great interview, Rosey!
I think I've watched everything the Peggmeister has been in.
Big Train gets the most revisits!
Loved this
Hot Fuzz ... one of the best Comedies ever made.
I just finished listening to this episode and it was delightful. Simon definitely opened up and had so many great behind the scenes stories. I enjoyed his take on Scotty and I loved his character on the Boys. We definitely need a part 2. Have a great week everyone.
Simon started off in a sketch based comedy show called Big Train, which also featured Nick Frost and Mark Heap who starred with him in Spaced. Very funny people. He cemented himself as a hero of my youth. his closing arc in the boys was tinged with sadness, I think its the most serious role I've seen him in (despite the show being a dark comedy.)
Simon freaking out over The Substance is exactly what I needed to hear today.
Love the Peggster, He grew up in the next valley to me. Years later, I think we both bought comic books from the same shop in Camden- Mega City Comics.
Spaced is my favourite sit-com of all time.
LOVE SIMON PEGG - and the cornetto trilogy, he is alos the best thing to happen to the MI series, and of course he is just what we all wish we were. an inspiration
Thank you, Michael ❤ Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏
Yes!! Simon Pegg, Wow!! legend he’s been in so much loved Shaun of the dead, Mission impossible, Paul, Star Trek and so much more. What great interview as always Michael, Simon is such a wonderful soul. Love all your interviews on the podcast hasn’t never been disappointed. Never cut your self so short Michael, you oughta be so proud of yourself for creating this awesome podcast for so many. You know and I know and everybody knows this podcast has always and will always be a blessing in our lives, especially with people that are dealing with so much in their life from work, careers, family, friends , grieving and dealing with mental issues from anxiety, depression, physical, and mental disabilities and so much. I hope your surgery goes well Michael like you. I’ve had surgery on my neck but many years ago had a fantastic surgeon. Sending prayers for a speedy recovery. I am also going in for surgery nexts month, it’s not an In-N-Out surgery. I’ll be in the hospital for a while probably during the holidays. I am staying positive that everything will go OK it is very nerve-racking any time you go for surgery. Michael keep up the awesome work, you rock🤘
I used to watch Simon in the series "Spaced". I'm also from Gloucester and now live in Cheltenham, so shout out to Simon our local lad. 👍
Didn't realise you were Lex until this interview.
Great channel 👏
Lovely conversation with Simon this week. Hope that you're healing well, and the surgery helped. ❤
Seems like a cool guy. Thanks for asking my question. Always appreciated ❤️🙏.
I remember seeing Simon in Spaced on Channel 4 over here in the UK. Been a huge fan ever since. ♥️
Same, Big train too.
@@mcborge1 Oh my God I recently was reminded (on Tick Tok) of the skit in Big Train about the ban on jerking/wanking off in the office 😂😂😂😂
"Big Train" on BBC Two is probably less remembered now than (the equally fantastic) Ch4's "Smack The Pony" though sadly 😥
@@fleason771 I remember that skit, lol.
@@mcborge1 Top video in a TH-cam search btw 🤣
@@fleason771 Yeah I found it earlier.
Great interview! Love Pegg! 💖 I hope you’re feeling better, Michael. 🫶
I watch 'Inside Of You' and 'Talk Ville' because of you and Tom Welling of course, not to forget Ryan, he's such a big part of it too. The guest are always a major bonus of this channel! (still the best Lex Luthor there ever was, because you brought the most humanity into the character.)
Simon Pegg is definitely one of the good ones. Love how genuine he is.
This was an awesome episode, i enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.
Great interview. Simon is a very knowledgable sci-fi movie nerd and it's no surprise he could write a Star Trek script. He was great as Scotty. I've never seen anything he's done that I don't like. And Nick Frost is effortlessly hilarious.
This was a terrific interview. I'm so glad Simon agreed to do it. Great work as usual Michael.
Spaced was my introduction to Simon and Nick. So many nods to films and television shows. Definitely my humour.
It's worth checking out
I’m watching for you Michael. I’m hoping you’re doing well🙏❤!!
My fav Simon Pegg film is Paul, just very funny and affectionate towards sci-fi / comic book fans, second only to Galaxy quest. And Sigourney Weaver is in both!
Watching Pegg always delivers...
Great interview with a great guest. Simon is an amazing talent and a cool dude
Dude you're podcast is the best, you kill every interview. Hope the surgery goes well!
Simon Pegg. Always been a favorite actor of mine. Loved to see him in star trek, since Im a long time fan of that too! His movies will go down in history. It’s nice to hear from him
He's such a cool dude, very happy he has had such a great career. He was a brilliant addition to the mission franchise, they're the best. WE NEED A STAR TREK 4!!!!!!
I've always been a huge fan of Simons. I'm stoked to see him on here. How can you not love this guy?
Edit: "Don't talk to me!! Just growl and hug me..." 😂😂👏👏👏👏
Nice to see the guy landed on his feet, he saw star wars in 1978, I saw it in 1985 at the age of 18. Good movie, it was my very first movie I ever saw.
Of kindness... when Shaun of the Dead came to Toronto for an advanced screening, the three lads weren't that well known, unless you knew about SPACED. Which we did. So after the screening, four of us met up with them afterward at their hotel and geeked out into the wee hours of the night. But he time Hot Fuzz came to town their stock had risen so at the after party Simon and Edgar were always talking with new fans (Nick had left cause he wasn't feeling well) so I waited until the end of the night to ask for photos with them. "Simon, not sure you remember me, but I was one of the four guys who hung out with you at the hotel after the Shaun of the Dead screening" "Yes, that was one of my favorite nights of the tour!". Whether he did or not doesn't matter it made me feel very good, and I'm sure if you can be yourself on tour and just enjoy the simple things like low key drinking and geeking out over Firefly and such then why wouldn't that be a great memory? I have two signed SPACED box sets because of those screenings.
Yes, I'm going to try the Pup Better Breath water. Thank you! I love Simon Pegg; he's fantastic. I am a big fan of movies and a fan of Mr. Cruise as well. When I saw his brief performance in "Taps," I immediately knew this kid was going to be big.
I really liked MI: DRP1. I saw it six times, and I see something I missed each time. Phenomenal.
Best of luck Michael with the surgery, recovery, and hopefully some pain relief!
Dope, Its nice to see the meeting of the minds and talk shop.
Love this interview such great conversations. Thanks for having Simon on the podcast and hoping your surgery has been a success🤗💖
Thanks to Rosey, Ryan and Simon! 🤩
Great hearing the other side of the story of the first meeting with Nick Frost.
Damn, he gets the best guests.
Shaun Of The Dead is genius and then, after at least 5 watches, somehow Hot Fuzz is even better!
Hot Fuzz is actually well known for being a PERFECT movie… much like Mario Kart for the SNES is the PERFECT game without fault.
I’ll have to check out “The Substance “ - I was already suggested that I see it , now I’ll definitely consider watching it
Hope your surgery went well! Great interview. I soo want more star trek!
Micheal your such a great interviewer love your show!
Simon Pegg is one of my favorite people on earth.
Great interview, love Simon
Yes 🙌 Simon Pegg we love him and love your podcast and love your choice of guests Michael R 🎉 👋 hope your surgery went ok buddy 🎉😊
I think he gets the credit for his on screen performances... but his writing on Spaced and subsequent movies have been phenomenal.
That. Is. Awesome... I cannot imagine the store guys face.. 🤣🤣🤣
Keep it up with great guests ❤
Legendary Guest!!!!!🎉💙🤘
Never thought I'd get to see you Rosie with Simon Pegg. I hope you get to work together 💜💜
getting Tom on this podcast would be INSANE
Tom Welling was on the Podcast a few times.
@ Tom Cruise 😭
Another great hangout Balmcake!
I hope you are recovering well after your surgery.
I know exactly what he means by the extreme anxiety. Had a hundred times of sweating all over, jumping at the rustling of leaves or the slightest sounds... just a nightmare. Which is why I've been in this cave for a long, long time.
If someone falls overboard on the Smallville cruise. They have to shout "Somebody saaaaaaaaaaaaavvve me! I don't care how ya do it..." 😂
Mike huge fan for like 20+ years. Here for you and Simon. Love from west ga woods
I had no idea who you were then you said Lex Luther... No way!!! 😂👍🏻
You were kind - had a friend who worked at Skywalker Ranch with Chevy - said he was the most uncool celeb he ever met.
Shaun of the Dead went to prove that the comedy-drama genre juxtaposition still works. If there was ever a premise fit for dry humor, it's the zombie sub-genre. Frost, Nighy, Pegg, what more needs to be said!
I never had a teacher that let a student tell a joke at the beginning of class to get it out. That is interesting.
I worked in a comic book store in Camden in London in the 90s and Simon Pegg used to come in from time to time and he was a nice guy! So did Amy Winehouse (probably a few years later) but I never saw them at the same time.
Megacity comics?
The joke on Benedict Cumberbatch during the making of Star Trek: Into Darkness is hilarious and Chris Pine with Pegg (more of Pegg's idea) by pranking Benedict Cumberbatch to put Newtron Cream and shake it off or something and Benedict realized he got punked. You can find the clip online and its the Graham Norton show.
Absolute Legend !!!
I love the podcast. Don’t make changes ❤❤❤❤❤
He'd make an amazing Doctor, even if for just a few episodes.
Getting Edgar on the show would be the Rosenbaum flavored Cornetto Trilogy.
Hearing a guy like Simon talking about his depression makes me feel less guilty about self medicating my anxiety. I've been through all the meds and the only one that worked had side effects that almost killed me. I wish I didn't drink but am glad I don't drink near as much as I used to.
Great podcast but for the love of all that is good in the world... will you please put your main TH-cam channel link everywhere you are?! E.g. there's no link to your main YT channel from your YT clips channel. Stumble on a clip while thumbing through YT and it's a real pain to find your main channel to watch the whole thing. Your main website, where your social icons are, doesn't have a YT link to your main channel. Nuf said... fan of the channel 👍👍
I loved "Spaced" and saw this Shaun of the Dead coming out and so hoped it was gonna be good....
And this was a delight to watch. Also PC World officially closed down a few years ago here.
I was at that show in Portland he references. It was my birthday party to do Smallville Nights.
I hope you feel better Michael and your guest he's a great "Shawn of the Dead excellent Zombie 🎬 🎞 🎥 "
Cracking interview
One of my all time favorites
My 7 year old is OBSESSED with Shaun of the Dead🖤🧟♂️
Love me some Simon Pegg 🍿
