Video was very professionally presented and I appreciated the intro where you took the time to explain major parts of your strat. Congrats on the WR, you're a legend! Can't wait to see you shave more time off the WR.
Oh... This is awesome, I loved that introduction to the run - while I know Lost Levels, I didn't know them in enough detail to really appreciate this. Thank you for the overview, and congratulations ^^
It was SMB2 SNES Any% in which I first encountered the Save and Quit strategy, and it's interesting there are more games where this method can be used! Awesome!
I love all the little changes they made in all stars to give those old games some more flair like making world 5 all snowy and Mario doing those peace sign animations. The lightening flashes in the back of the castle and all. So neat!
I just recently started playing SNES Lost Levels again after a few years hiatus. This game is so difficult. You make it look easy. Thanks for this video.

There’s something so gratifying knowing you’re watching a run… and already knowing it’s the world record run ahead of time but the runner doesn’t (at the time of him playing)!

Hello there Kosmic. Sorry if this is nearly 2 weeks late but: I also liked the little explainer at the beginning to give new viewers what exactly goes into the run. Great stuff and great times for both 8-4 and D-4 which is also the final time. 8m 17.062 for the 8-4 segment which led into a D-4/final world record time of 13m 55.423s. Congrats on the record man!!!!!!!!
@@HonkeyKongLive both of those are totally fine and used anywhere they're faster in tons of games. Maybe you're thinking of categories like "No up+A" or "deathless" in some NES games where those categories are more popular, but there's the regular any% categories too. OoT is a good example where there's a hundred intentional deaths and save warps haha. Even the next SM64 120 Star TAS will feature a savewarp, which is really neat.
Not that i did any work for it but I tried running n64 emulator and that shit didnt work, and my lovely aunt took my nintendo with 60l thrash bag filled with games collection for my younger cousin to play a little, and never gave it back.
SMB original - Bowser is trying to thwart Mario's efforts!! SMB Lost Levels - Bowser is literally trying to powerbomb Mario neck-first into a brick wall and murder him
I wonder if that’s not cheating by saving & quit then going back to it and select another world(yes i know it’s quicker) but do you think this selection strat is allowed to be legit?
"Now this has to be the run" It's funny to see speedrunners talk about how they will get the wr in the beginning of the run as a joke and then actually get it
Congratulations. You are a real superstar at these games. I don't know how people can put hours/days into these speedruns especially in this game where it was "too hard" for NA audiences. You along with Niftski, Darbian, and the other SMB greats will forever be true legends in Super Mario Bros speedrunning.
I don’t understand how the Super Mario All Star VS can be in the same category as the original FDS version. It isn’t a perfect replica after all, so some timing, and glitches would be different, right?
2:40 This neat feature also works on the American version of Super Mario Bros 2 in Super Mario All Stars. The game has 4 main/major warp zones (there’s others but they’re glitches and warp back to the beginning of that world or somewhere in a previous stage of that World. If you want the link let me know) Anyhoo.. we have…. M 1-3 to 4-1 S 3-1 to 5-1 M 4-2 to 6-1 S 5-3 to 7-1 S = near start M = near mid, so yeah you even have to play part of those 2 stages And it’s kind of hard which path to take. Each one requires to do at least one whole world. 3-1 to 5-1 and then 5-3 to 7-1 seems basic. You have to fight two bosses though, but the warps are at the start, it’s the beginning easier levels. 5-1 is rather straightforward, although 5-2 is a bit tough. 1-3 to 4-1 and then 4-2 to 6-1 is popular. The ice world isn’t too complicated. No birdo at end of 4-1. 6-2 is really straightforward and 6-3 has a nifty short cut. 1-3 to 4-1 and then 5-3 to 7-1 is underrated a bit. Again World 4 is considered easier than World 3. World 4-3 also has a nice shortcut. But then you have to do 5-1 and 5-2 which are a bit tough. But playing the SNES you can go to 4-1 save/quit, then click back to World 3, warp to 5-1 and then go to World 7-1 in World 5-3. I did this all the time.
0:58 I do think this needs slightly more clarification for people who are only familiar with the NES. Mario 2 Japan was made for the Famicom Disk System, not the original Famicom. The FDS used floppy disks, and while they have the disadvantage of having slow load times, they are larger in capacity than carts, and you can easily save data to them. So unlike the NES, the FDS could easily save your progress, which the NES usually didn't do. So while you have to beat the game 8 times, it doesn't have to be in one sitting.
Theres a solid 50 or so NES games that had save batteries. Zelda is at least popular enough that people should know that's possible :) haha. If they ever ported this game I wonder how they would've handled it, since it's just one tiny thing that needs to be saved
I’m a tad confused, don’t know this game very well. When he beats World 8, why does it go to World A instead of World 9? Either way, well played and grats on the run.
Could you (or maybe this is more apt for Bismuth?) do a video explaining the speedrunning time keeping software? I'm always curious on how it keeps your PBs, who does the splits and how are they done (like, isn't it a distraction while playing?), how accurate are they if a human is initiating the splits, etc.
