ah yes, my favourite analogy;

Makes more sense on the PAL version.
The bus goes when the bus goes as they say.
Hot breakdown! I learned quite a few things about All-Stars I didn't know before.
Apparently the weird bumping physics when breaking brick blocks is also another bug that was introduced by attempting to fix something completely unrelated to it, which had the side effect of making the NES bumping knockback we all know and love, such a cool accidental feature lost from fixing what really didn't need to be fixed all things considered.
This was one of the blog post from RGME if I remember correctly, it also broke down a lot of things related to the game, all the articles are well worth reading if they didn't yet make it to the video format.
Yeah, it's because the NES version buffers the blocks to be removed in the next frames (one 16x16 tile per frame), as updating the corresponding tilemap is slow, which due to the way they coded it, makes them linger for longer in the actual stage too. They rewrote the rendering logic because they figured SNES is fast enough to update more tiles at once and they didn't think that it'd actually affect the gameplay
Wait, that was a mistake?! But it's the one that makes physical sense! Mario imparts momentum into the bricks, and loses his own.
@@i-am-linja precisely why I think it was a bad idea to have the original system patched, the game worked perfectly on the NES with the accidental bonking knockback, and it is such a shame this was broken in the Super Mario All-Stars port, considering that later games pretty much worked exactly as expected anyway.
@@i-am-linjaI don’t think it was really a bug in the original. The people making the game knew how the system worked. I think it was more just using the engine’s limitations to automate some of the physics. Like how space invader’s difficulty curve wasn’t programmed in. The enemies just got faster as you killed them because the game could physically run faster with less entities on screen. And so any emulated version of the game would seemingly break that feature by improving the performance. It wasn’t a bug in the original. It was just a really smart way to use the game’s limitations

"There's another version that's EVEN faster" He CAN'T keep getting AWAY with it!
If I didn't know All-Stars actually came out just a few years after Mario 1-2-3, I'd think it was a fan-remake of the originals decades later, but no! The developers took the opportunity to really flex the new hardware. A similar thing regarding Mother 1 and Earthbound, because a lot of the music was remade and boy did they really nail the remakes. You can tell NES developers were really itching to move on to SNES.
Yeah and if you look at the nonsense SMB3 did to have the graphical improvements it had, it's pretty obvious why
It is a fascinating game.
I'd be itching to get upgraded hardware too. Double the bits, more memory, more storage, what's not to like?

What on earth is your pfp
@@alaeriia01I'm thinking wii virtual console
@@psymar it's definitely not Wii VC; that's a straight emulation but it runs at 60 frames instead of 60.6 so it's marginally slower.
I was thinking the Gameboy Color version actually.
Wild guess, the even faster version of the game would be either Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Gameboy Color, or possibly a lesser known port, or maybe even another version with region exclusive changes from the original?
I doubt the unofficial/homebrew ports are considered at this point, but I know there are certain quirks in the C64 port of the game, so we never know!
I'm betting on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe too. I have done a framecount of the TAS of that version of the game to convert to RTA's rules just yesterday by coincidence (which seems to be the first time ever in the Internet someone did this?) and I got a stupidly fast 4:51,2 or so. But to be fair, that TAS has a *lot* of left + right simultaneously... Although there's a catch that you CAN do L+R in that version of the game, by playing on a GameBoy Player and using a GameCube controller.
@@CaioXG002 interesting indeed, this seems to be very promising for what is coming, thanks for taking the time to make the calculations!
i'm gonna guess that the fastest version is Speed Mario Bros from NES Remix
Just started my adventure of speedrunning SMB1, and I used the All Stars version. I went in blind not knowing the skips besides 1-2 and I got a 30+ minute run haha. Now I'm trying to learn the game and beat that time!
That said, I've been watching the original SMB1 strats not knowing all the changes in the All Stars version. Glad I found this!

Mario running at Mach 4+ speed.
When Mario is faster than Peppino...
Hm
I grew up playing the All-Stars compilation, so those SNES remakes (and their GBA ports) will always have a special place in my heart.
Also, based on Kosmic's comment at the end...I wonder if it's time to dig out my old SMB DX cartridge...
I grew up on the GBA versions, it was a long time before I realized that SMB2 and 3 were originally NES games, I had grown up with only their SNES sprites
yeah, that's my thought too
As a casual non-speedrunner I knew that people are crazy about optimizing and the skill involved, but when you just thought "that's it, people will finally leave Mario alone :)"..... The amount of game knowledge you need to have for all this is just next level. And a very well put together video, narrating etc. Thanks, Kosmic!
I love listening to Kosmic's explanations because he explains in a way my dumbass can understand.
I also really love every video's ending tune, which I've dubbed Kosmic's theme because I don't know its title or where it's from.
I loved hearing the Peloponnesus theme from the Battle of Olympus show up at 24:36! That was a fun little treat.
Came here to see if anyone else recognised this!
i've always thought it would be cool to see a TAS that uses the exact same inputs for every single level lol. wonder if that'd be possible...
oh.. wow thats a fascinating idea. I've seen several games beaten with 1 set of inputs, but one set of inputs to beat every LEVEL. That's an awesome concept!

kosmic in 2027: 0:16 is almost possible
Any time is possible if you do the speedrun aboard a spaceship going near the speed of light relative to earth
I appreciate the joke about the lengths runners go to to get faster, but this would actually have the opposite effect. Fast-moving objects appear to experience _less_ time when moving relativistically, so if the run is timed from Earth it will be _longer_ than it appears aboard the ship. Timing it _from the ship_ wouldn't help either: from its perspective, _the Earth_ is the one moving slower. Plus, it's definitely cheating.
@@i-am-linja Does building an Alcubierre drive count as TAS
@@andimcc6131 It's definitely tool-assisted. Mods are reluctant to accept such runs though because the judging process is inflated four years by the differential equations in the rules.
My first instinct when you said time travel from 1985 to 1993 was “cool, that means I’m 8 now!” 😂🤦🏻♀️
If you're trying to convince me that Niftski isn't a terminator that chose video games over killing John Connor, then you're doing something wrong. He's clearly got the precision of a machine.
In the future:
Kosmic: Remember how in the past we thought 4:53 was the limit? In this holo i will explain you how we got from those slow 5:50's to the current 3:20 WR
Kosmic's next video: "So, what you need to do is precisely time about 400 button presses within the 12-frame window, doing so will set you up for later in the run. then, you have to do another 60 inputs directly after you jump over the title screen in 3.469 seconds."

i remember hearing in an interview very long time ago that the floating brick thing when breaking them was a bug that was accedently added by fixing a different, and discovered by devs after the game was already in production for the carts, so back then for a console you couldnt patch games, so that floatyness remained. if i remember there is a community made "patch" for the rom that fixes only this, but of course ppl want the "authenticity" so most ppl played without it who do know of it.
There's some evidence that each version of the original SMB engine(Vs., 2j, All Night Nippon, All Stars) reused the previous one's modifications; in 2j the bounce height physics were modified, and some other things were patched, so SMB1 in All Stars shares those changes. All Stars is notable for being the only iteration to have the brick breaking bug. Also interesting is SMB Deluxe for Game Boy Color, which would have been entirely reprogrammed for the different CPU architecture - since they took the time to recreate the SMB1 behaviors more closely, it's probably the closest to a fully patched release.
It's time to wait another 6 months for the end of this quadrilogy! (Great video btw :D)

I left this comment 40 seconds too early
It seems the difference in brick physics in SMAS was unintended, and causes by a swapped sign error. What was supposed to be a negative value was instead a positive.
Apparently, you can also fix this by changing a single byte in the code.
Just like in a lot of cities around the globe apparently Nintendo cancelled several bus routes in the 1990s.
