Glad you posted, but understand spending time elsewhere. Good video and thanks for posting. I bought and still have one of these from LL Bean in 1985 or so. Back then, I broke the blade tip off in a thoughtless effort to take top metal plug/cap off a can of coleman fuel. I still love it and it stays in my truck. Of course, I have more ;-) for carry.

I still love and regularly use the black Pioneer and silver Solo that I have from you, and I also love that old Tinker small - but I'm no using that one for sure :)

I actually bought this knife off ebay last year. I got the 85 Wenger Soldier (my birth year) and it does have the waffen stamp on it. So I am guessing mine was actually issued. (It has markings of being well loved, which I feel adds to its story.)
I appricate you noting the sharp edge of the bottle opener. I had thought mine had been modified, as my modern versions don't have it.
Great overview! Sweet box too. :-)

I'm new to collecting and still trying to learn, but Victorinox bought Wenger in 2005, so why does that Wenger have a Victorinox can opener on it?

I love Birth Year gifts. I have been buying birth year wines for my kids that can be cellared for 50+ years, birth year scotch whiskey for my wife, and just bought a birth year watch for my upcoming half century. I would love a birth year Swiss Army for myself and family. Any thoughts, Dan?

The pioneer is still in production. Thanks for watching. Here’s a link to the Victorinox website for the pioneer. www.victorinox.com/us/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Medium-Pocket-Knives/Pioneer-Alox/p/0.8201.26

Victorinox sold these well after they stopped their own soldier ! Probably to use up the scales and tools left over and the last variants had no date stamp on the blades and always had the bail on board too! The Wenger soldiers/ soldats standards were never the quality of their Victorinox cousins and i think that went for all their knives too?

      Hey Mike,
I couldn't disagree more. The quality of my Wegner is more defined and also thicker than Victorinox. I have compared them side by side. Bought mine in 97.

Do you have a Victorinox from that period ? They are to the same swiss military specifications! The newer ones on both parties got thinner. In fact, the evolution of them saw that, but there are three levels of thickness to the tools ! The first wenger with wenger delemont and the elsener Switzerland were the chunky ones with the next wenger delemont Switzerland coming out slightly thinner as was Victorinox version but if you look at the back springs on the older ones wenger never seem as good in finish? I have had dozens of the two makers as I was a collector back in the 80s and 90s of swiss army knives . I will say that wenger had the bigger blades with more belly and a great thumb notch, though! I also had a swiss friend who worked at Victorinox, and he said Victorinox supplied the can opener and the alox scales to wenger for production of these 1961 soldiers, so wenger were only producing the three quarters of the knife anyway? The allocation of the model was also potluck, which version a soldier got when they picked them up!
But I agree that the quality is excellent on both, but from experience, I found Victorinox edged the bet!
