Jeep Overland Camper Ultimate Winter Upgrade!

  • In this video I finalise the diesel engine block heater, Upgrade my rear hatch ladder with some checker plate steps, paint it with Upol Raptor Liner and do some small changes to my All Powers battery. These are some of the last details I wanted to get done before getting back out camping and exploring.
    As you probabaly know, I've always been a bit particular about making sure everything is ready before I get out into places where i'm remote and solo. It was the engine heater that I wanted 90 percent complete just because cold starts aren't good for the engine.
    I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

    If everyone took care of their vehicle with the same level of care you do to your Jeep, no one would ever need a new car again. Well done! Enjoy your videos, cheers from Montana.

    Watching you design and build your own system is much more fun to watch than installing a aftermarket pre-built system. Your doing a great job and I love watching these XJ upgrades.

      A big part of it for me is DIY, I enjoy the problem solving, etc. As much as a pre built unit is easy, it's not much fun. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate you watching it!

    As a lid for the diesel heater air hose, you can use a "Storz B" coupling. I use one for my heater, works great, and you also can close it correctly.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I quite like the look of that. I've actually already bought a marine exhaust cap, which will work. So I will try it out first. It's good to know about the Storz B fitting though, looks really good 👍

    Hello Mike, I thoughly enjoy your old channel and I really like this one. Over the years I have learned from and enjoyed your take on Bushcraft and with this channel I am getting great tips as I slowly build out my 1989 Grand Cherokee. But, the single greatest thing so far has been discovering Yorkshire Gold Tea due to your recommendation. I saw you going on about it on a video and my wife ordered some that night. It is the best tea I have ever tasted! Thank you for ALL the information. Best of luck, Mike

    Love seeing the XJ maintained this way. I see in the US they just destroy them, cut them up and treat them like a disposable off road toys to the point where there are fewer and fewer left. Then as they become rare and start turning into classic cars they complain that the price of them is going up up and up....Preserve the XJs you have before there are none left.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are getting very expensive here also. I was lucky to get my 1990 4.0 for such a reasonable price. I will probably keep it more original in comparison to the diesel.

    Nice work the mechanical valves seem a lot of work (great work) but I can’t help but think a couple of electric throttle bodies from a scrap yard would have been significantly easier.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I doubt I could find a throttle body around here for anything less than a kidney trade. I remember wondering the junk yards as a kid picking parts and buying them for peanuts. It's all online now and not so obtainable. Sounds cool, though, a couple of throttle bodies, although it took me 20 minutes to make the valve.

    I'm surprised they don't salt roads, but I guess if they did that it'd be a never ending job. Good for you that they don't, it ruins vehicles.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's mostly an ecological thing, i think. They don't want all the salt going in the lakes, and I think the reindeer are also a problem with salted roads. Regardless, it's a good thing for vehicle owners.
      Further south, it's a different story

    I hadn't realised what a really big job this was going to be, great work.
    To the point you made at the end of the video, I enjoy both your camping and modification videos. In honesty a lot of it is not relevant to me; I don't camp in sub zero conditions and I have a TJ rather than an XJ, but I still find bogh types of video interesting and there are always snippets of useful info.
    I know I have said it before, but K think your XJ is one of the best looking overlanding rigs I've seen and it is also clearly incredibly well set up for your conditions.
    I hope it isn't too cheeky to ask, but is TH-cam your 'day job'?

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Once again, I bit off more than I could chew, although I got through it in the end, and it seems to be working better than I thought. Interestingly, I watch desert overland films, also Iceland based ones with those massive inflation tires. I think the one stupid thing on mine is the water containers on the outside, something I need to think about.
      It's not cheeky at all. YT is almost a full-time thing now, almost. It's taking a lot of time in its initial stages, and I think as things grow and the algorithm knows what I'm all about, it will require less time to keep it running.
      My previous channel taught me a lot about burnout and how to balance time and life, so I'm talking it a bit slower this time. I still do part-time work at times, so supplement YT.

    Awesome video again Mike! Just curious why you went the route you did with the cab and windshield heater. Would it not have been more simple and cleaner to just attach it to the current cab vent? Then you could just switch the lever to the cab/inside then choose your defrost on your console dial having it would heat both. Hope this made sense. If not I could try to explain in another way. Either way keep it up I love how you make the things you want instead of buying something!

      The heater on the cowl isn't a windscreen heater. It's a rooftop tent outlet. You connect a duct there, and it runs up to the tent in which you open the valve for tent heating.
      It is difficult to plumb this system into the factory vents due to the space in the engine bay. I also want it separate from any internal controls as it operates remotely of the vehicles controls.
      I've wanted to build this system for a very long time.
      Thanks for watching

    Hi, Do you have an additional coolant pump that works when you turn on the diesel heater (and the engine is turned off) or does it work on free heat exchange in the liquid?
    By the way, great job.

    I’m not saying Mike is MacGyver, but I’ve never seen them both in the workshop at the same time 😂
