  • My Suzuki GS1000 having its points checked and a compression test.
    My Suzuki GS1000.
    Produced 1978-1980.
    Power 74.5hp @8000 rpm.
    Top Speed 135mph (not now?!)
    997.4cc DOHC Air cooled Inline Four.
    Wet Weight 250kgs (est)
    45-50 mpg.
    The GS 1000 is a comfortable, smooth and, in my opinion, a well built machine of the past. It definitely hasn’t got the same power it exited the factory with, but its got more than enough for playing around the twisties. The handling is not up to modern standards (obviously) but it can still be ridden fairly fast through the bends and, if you need to, it has surprisingly good brakes for its age. I’ve not owned it long but I’m certainly loving a new type of riding on my first vintage motorcycle.

    I'm baffled that the lack of baffles makes it run smoother.. Its baffling really...amazing results for an old girl. She's still got it, like old Madge the material girl!

    Gawd! I'm an Idiot. I just did a little road trip. Had one of my metering plugs go bad, had to limp it home at 80mph? Soo I did a compression test when I got home. I got 60psi across all 4 cylinders. I thought this was low, but very even? I fixed the carbs, set the fuel and balanced it. Runs perfect. I now see the error. Pluss I have the CV carbs so this must be why my closed throttle readings where lower. When I get time, I will do it right!

      It’s was such a relief when I found out I’d checked it wrong and then got some high compression readings 👍

    You really should have had all four spark plugs when doing the test as well as wide open throttle

    I wonder when they changed to electronic ignition ? My 81 GS1000G is electronic.
