  • Here I tackle the compression testing and check the valve clearances on the Z750 engine before putting it back into the frame and find out there is a big problem with at least one of the cylinders that will need a lot more attention

I eagerly await next instalment! At least the broken studs will be easier to deal with now the head is off. 👍

Squirt some oil down the bores. If its ring/cylinder issue the compression should go up. If not its probably valves. Either wrong adjustment. Damage (bent/burnt) or dirty valve seats. You are going to need something around 100 psi to get it to start properly. I would think 140-160 on a decent engine. Look forward to seeing what you find.

When the valves are fully open on these engines you can the seating surface through the plug holes, if it’s been standing a long time I’d think they’d need reseating TBH.

On car motors good compression is 180 - 140 and a diff of 10 to15psi between cylinders is bad and needs a rebuild.

A tablespoon full of oil in the cylinder and test again. If compression rises then it's your piston or rings. No change, likely valves.

Alf, I would say 120 to 140 would be fine. If ALL were 60, it would probably run, but not well. Yeah, you're going to need to over-haul the engine; rings, valves, cams adjust, main bearings, and rod bearings. But, that's where the fun is right, mate ?

Alf, there are a few more things you could have tried before stripping it down mate. I recently went through this with my little 400 Four Honda. I had very low comprehension on one cylinder and pretty poor on two of the others. In my case it was that the valve clearances were too tight not allowing the valves to seat fully. .05 mm made a massive difference. Went from 60 PSI to 170 psi unbelievable. Your engine compression should be in the same region, but the most important thing is that they’re all the same or similar.

Yes I’ve taken the chance to check clearances and clean it all up too

An inspection camera would've been handy before a tear down. You could go in and inspect the condition of the bore and the piston.
How did you go with it anyway ??
