I grew up on Styx and even though I listen to more "Metal" music now than stuff like Styx, I still play their cd's and always will. All of us who grew up on this kind of music have been so lucky to have it. Its such a big part of my life.
I liked the album, but it takes more than one song to make a great album. Sure there were other songs on it that were pleasurable to the ears, but it was absolutely their weakest effort at that point.
I like to call myself a fan of heavy metal & classic rock. This is the first time i heard this song. I was today years old😮 definitely going on my playlist
todd sumed it up perfectly when he said that this is the one part of the record that got to the levels of cheese that the record demanded i don't like this song but i listen to it once a month or something just to know im still alive
This was an excellent concept album, read up on it. This song is one act of the story and couldnt be sung by Deyoung(Kilroy) I used to listen to this song over and over as a kid. Great album.
That's what makes this interesting, this is actually like a "Rock & Roll" Opera in a way that tells this story & the members of Styx each play a different character!
Phil H nope the concept of the roboto album was the government censorship of music and TV cause Paul crouch Jr did a thing on backward masking on some rock bands albums and Styx was one of the bands featured with their song snow blind I have seen an interview with Dennis De Young on this topic
Yeah, one thing I always thought was a bit strange was that Righteous sings "Why Don't you turn that music down". Would he actually refer to Rock n Roll as "music"? Very underrated Styx album.
True fact: After they were done shooting this video, JY told Dennis DeYoung "Start running, because I'm going to kick your teeth in". Dennis DeYoung has not been seen since.
+Jim Mallonee First of all I LOVE your comment. I totally believe it, especially after watching the Styx Behind the Music episode. JY and Tommy Shaw just wanted to rock, but Dennis DeDung (as we referred to him in high school - see Desert Moon) was way too overbearing and "Broadway." That being said, it's interesting that I see this video a little differently now than I did back in the day. I remember this album coming out, buying it (dear God, WHY???) and being bitterly disappointed...although there were 2 or 3 songs that I did like, though marginally. This was one of them. As cheesy as this video is - and as TOTALLY justified as JY was in telling DeDung to start running - in retrospect, this video really captures the ridiculousness of the record burnings, etc. of that era. A local church where I lived had such a record burning and it looked as ridiculous as this video. Seriously. Who'da thunk it? An early example of Reality TV. lol
This video came out when I was in High School. We used to laugh about it. It was so over the top in its parody of fundamentalist churches against rock music. It's all what the hearings were about in the 80s where Dee Snider owned every politician who was blaming rock music for all the ills of of society. And in reference to the album being bad, it was. But the two main videos from it were entertaining and in heavy rotation on MTV. While Tommy and James might have been mad at Dennis for ruining Styx, I doubt they minded the money they made. I also love that Tommy went on to a moderately successful solo career and really hit big with Damn Yankees.
rko815 I know what you mean about what some of the churches were telling kids to do. Back in 1978, at a church in Pennsylvania, they told all the teenagers to bring their rock albums in, a the church officials broke them in front of everybody there. Not me though. I believe this video though was also referencing all the book burnings in the 1930's under Hitler. After all, "Kilroy Was Here" was started during WWII. The soldiers wrote it all over during the war.
@rko815...all the more interesting because "Heavy Metal Poisoning" was done two years before the PMRC hearings where Dee Snider and Frank Zappa had a field day with Tipper Gore and her activists. And six years before the fall of anti-rock televangelist Jimmy Swaggart.
JY, Tommy and Chuck surely have SOME good memories of fun making all of this. JY sells his character well, the Panozzo brothers are hilarious (especially on the concert video) and Chuck did a great job voicing the Roboto’s. I always figured they just agreed to disagree as Tommy did appear in the video for “Music Time” waving goodbye.
My Brothers and I were crazy from this video. We imagine a world going crazy about rock and roll and trying to band it. There was a Church not far from us that was always having record burning.
I've never understood why Dennis DeYoung's ego gets blamed for this. I mean, he had Tommy Shaw as the hero. And while the video is silly, it was also very timely - Tipper Gore really was like this. It's a good album and a very good commentary of the times.
The entire album was a response to various busybodies hauling STYX into court for supposedly putting subliminal messages in their albums. (Yes the band with love songs so sappy they make Air Supply blush.) As for the rest of the band being dead against this, I call BS too. For one thing, the Ponozos apparently loved this album, (both loved goofy theatrics in general,) and you can tell in this video JY was having WAY too much fun doing it. I think Shaw did legitimately hate this and the more control he got over the band post DeYoung, the more the remaining members fell into line. But even GOWAN loves this album which is why Mr Roboto is back in the playlists now.
Totally, people forget how it was then. It was very poignant, and Styx themselves had been accused of demonic messages in their music. The whole presentation was SUPPOSED to be over the top. Mr Roboto is good, and Don't Let It End REPRISE, is way better than the actual song, but Poisoning MAKES this album. I remember at the time, thinking " if the PMRC think this is satanic, they definitely havent heard the earlier albums, cause Dr Righteous would really hate those" lol
For a guy who didn't like the concept thing, JY certainly seems to love to ham it up here. He's great at it, actually. Fun song and video. Love those 'yyyeeeeAAAAAHHHH!!!!'s.
I have a hard time believing he didn't like it. He auditioned for a part on _Miami Vice_ around this time, too. Why would he do that if he didn't want to try some different things?
@Bandaids4ever Not everyone hates it. It was a conceptual album, written in the style of a rock opera. Styx was a conceptual band with much of experimental. If some guys dislike it, they're the ones who love to post "I hate this..." posts. The rest of us enjoy anything we like without complaining about music we don't.
I've had this song stuck in my head for over 30 years, yet this is the first time I've ever bothered to find it and listen to it....I've passed up used record stores, thrift shops, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, 13 years of TH-cam and who knows what else....now I've finally fixed that problem.
Does anybody notice the double VH1Classic logo on the bottom right side of the screen? That states this video was played on a Tuesday for the channels Tuesday Twoplay series. I miss Tuesday Twoplay. What a great way to see two classic videos in a row from great bands like Styx.
I'm aware of the cheese of this song. But cheesiness is great at many times. I like James Young's vocals in this song, it's very fun trying to sing along with the "yeah's" that he sings out.
imfpredicts He was actually 29. He was born September 11, 1953, and this album was released in February of 1983. He's always had a very youthful appearance.
I don't think its necessarily the album that finished them. I have read in interviews where Tommy and JY said that Dennis wanted to take the band in a more soft rock direction and they just did not want to go there with him
This song coincided perfectly with the “satanic panic” and created a perfect storm or rock and roll versus the the church record burnings. My brother and I had this album and would turn it up too loud, and suddenly we would here dad stomping down the hall to turn the devil music down. He thought this was satanic. 🤣 the funny thing is, he had no clue what was about to unfold with me listening to Ozzy, Judas Priest, etc.
"Kilroy Was Here" was their last album for a while. Some of the members pursued solo careers after this. But the group reunited in 1990 with a new lead guitarist (Glenn Burtnik) taking over for Tommy Shaw, who of course joined Damn Yankees. The group has had a number of personnel changes over the last 22 years (John Panozzo - Todd Sucherman, Dennis DeYoung - Lawrence Gowan, Glenn Burtnik - Rickie Phillips), but they continue to tour - and record albums.
How ironically accurate this depicts my childhood. Bible banging parents, pushing their agenda and telling me how EVIL rock and roll music was. Grew up in the 80's and missed a lot of the greatest music ever written due to them. I'm just glad that I'm able to go back and hear it all again and know, it's NOT EVIL!!! One more thing, how can there be VH1 logos on this video?? This was MTV!!!!
This song is so bad and cheesy to where I can't help but like it, I'm glad they've let James Young sing this song because he's got the right voice for it.
The song is meant to be a parody to prove the idiocy of people who advocate censorship so a "cheesy" song is appropriate. Still, it rocks and proves the point. Dr. Righteous could work for TH-cam presently.
I agree with you 100%. Dennis DeYoung's complete full name in Kilroy Was Here is "Robert Orin Charles Kilroy." And James Young is "Dr. Everett Righteous."
to answer your question Meangreen, the answer is no...Tommy & JY didn't like Kilroy and Tommy medicated himself during this tour and quit Styx after the tour was finished in 1984...........
@Pbirv That was teh point...and if you didn't get the reference to the moral majority well, you weren't there or you thought Fallwell and his ilk were right.
Kilroy Was Here is one of the craziest chapters in the history of rock music and 40 years later I’m still 100% here for it.
Yes exactly!!!
Yessss!!
I love how dramatic and operatic this band is. Over the top, but perfectly so. Great musicians and great performers.
We honestly needed a full length feature.

I'd agree

Ayy, gotta also give a shout out to Serpent is Rising!
It's certainly Top 3 underrated, no question

3:15 Hey wait a minute, that sounds like rock and/or roll
This song has been stuck in my brain since 1983. James Young poisoned my young mind.
JY is scary awesome. I love how unique his voice is, and how hard rock he is in general!
The folks who did not like this album have obviously never listened to this song at the appropriate volume. This shit rocks my world.
I liked the album, but it takes more than one song to make a great album. Sure there were other songs on it that were pleasurable to the ears, but it was absolutely their weakest effort at that point.
My neighbors sure do listen it at the appropriate volume! LOL
There's a reason my volume knob goes to 11
I'm sorry but this was Styx worst album, remember people made fun of this album
Classic Song from a classic album.
Saw these guys perform this on the Mr Roboto tour!!!
Awesome!!!!!!
That must have been incredible!
I saw them at the Sun Dome at USF in '91....they didn't play this one and I was bummed.

JY really hammed it up when he played Dr. Righteous! LOL! I also love the fact that both Chuck & his late twin John also each had a part in it too!

You know you're dealing with one hell of a ham when the guy's mouth is basically an all-consuming trapezoid.
