  • This is a walk down Hosack Ave, on the South Side of Columbus OH. It sits at the border between the more residential North side of the street and the companies which formed along the railroad, which used to also service the old Buckeye Steel Castings.
While Buckeye Steel Castings is sadly long gone (replaced by extremely large warehouses which are currently being finished up), you still have Franklin International, which creates adhesives for business and (presumably) home use.
On the North Side is largely residential housing, which formed there around the turn of the last century. During Steelton's early years many immigrant families moved into the area, providing labor for the steel and iron mills that dotted the area. Many of those families earned enough to create their own businesses; many small and larger stores and businesses formed along the Parsons Ave corridor and on the street corners, providing a decent living for the sons and daughters of the immigrant community.
To minister to the community, churches would also spring up in the area, many designed around the immigrant community's needs.
Sadly, this area's heyday is long past; many of the stores that formed in this area's early years are gone, as has much of the suburban areas of Columbus; the steel and iron mills that made this area thrive are gone as well. There is hope, however.
The warehouses being built on the old Buckeye Steel site should bring jobs with it, and the Parsons Ave corridor is being revitalized so hopefully better days will come back.
Just call this video of Hosack between S. High St and S. Parsons Ave a snapshot of days gone by.
