What do Unequal Length Headers Sound Like on a V6 Honda Odyssey?

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 24 มี.ค. 2022
  • I made my Honda J series GROWL with this UEL header setup! I'm sure you haven't heard a v6 with a setup like this before, let alone a freaking minivan. This ain't your mother's regular Honda Odyssey muffler delete!
    If you're curious, this van specifically has a Honda J35A4 motor in it. It's currently mated to the BYBA 5 speed automatic transmission, for which I'm building a controller that will allow me to manually change gears.

    It sounds kind of similar to GMs 3.8 V6 sent in Monte carlos, Grand Prix, regals etc. Factory they came with unequal length headers because the engine is transversal and instead of a typical exhaust running under the engine there’s an over pipe going from the front manifolds to the rear which cause an odd sounding V6. At idle and very low RPMs (especially with a cam) they sound like a V8 due to the rumble and slight rasp it gives off. That’s until you give it revs and the rasp gets worse and worse 😂

    Try a decent resonator to give it some depth and then after that whack in a flowmaster super 44 or similar muffler. That particular muffler sounds great on a subaru with uel headers. I have this setup on my klde V6 2.5 FWD and it sounds good, even with equal length headers. I might give this uel j pipe business a go on my car. Sounds really unique man.

    Ya know i was all sorts of stoked when back in like 2010 right around the 5th gen camaro comi g out, we stated seeing V6 engines making 300+ Hp. Finally it didnt feel like settling when you bought a V6 Camaro or mustang. I even bought a 2012 Awd Charger with the 3.6. It was a great car that madebdecent power, especially moving that barge around. The only problem was the sound, in factory trim it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, and try as i might i could not find an exhaust that would produce a decent sound. You sir have succeeded where i failed, that sounded magnificent. I mean that not just for a V6 but it sounds great in general. Well done

    The deeper growl you're getting with the new J pipe is literally just an audible representation of inefficiencies in your exhaust setup. The perfect exhaust setup in theory would be one where each primary pipe from the header to the collector is exactly the same length, and every pipe would join to a 6-1 collector where the cylinders are firing in a rotary pattern. A setup like that has a high pitched overtone because you're hearing the fundamental frequency of the exhaust pulses coming through uninterrupted. Any lower pitched frequencies that come through in the form of a growl or pulsing or whatever else it may be is a result of pulses colliding in the pipe as a result of the runner lengths being unequal and cancelling out the higher frequency and replacing it with some harmonic of that fundamental. If you want the most power possible from your headers, you need that equal length J pipe, even if it has a 180 degree bend. Most headers you get online will say they're "equal length" but they usually have a decent difference in the actual primary runner length. The only company that comes to mind that's actually done a proper equal length header setup for a v6 is SG Motorsport with their VQ35 headers. Once you've got some actual equal length headers, you can do a y pipe to join the two headers to one, and if the secondaries for your y pipe are also equal length, you can get away with the same diameter of pipe you used after your primary collector. For this engine, 3 inch is so overkill it's not even funny, maybe 2 and 1/4 inch would get a little more power.

    • @White_Night_Demon
      @White_Night_Demon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Is that how v8s have that low rumble growl at idle? Thye just run unequal headers to 3" or bigger collectors and then straight pipe that out or just stop at the collecters and run open headers?

    • @ScottGroome
      @ScottGroome หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@White_Night_Demon Nah, only cross-plane crankshaft v8s sound like that because the left and right banks don't fire in even alternating pulses. In a 4 stroke engine where you have 720 degrees, two rotations, per cycle, you have to have each cylinder firing within that 720 degrees. For a v8, that means having a cylinder firing every 90 degrees. In a flat-plane v8, like in a Ferrari, each bank fires in an alternating sequence, as in L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R. That gives you 180 degrees between cylinders on the left bank firing and 180 degrees between cylinders on the right bank firing. Because the pulses are even and the crank separation is constant, you get that smooth, high-pitched exhaust note. On a cross-plane v8, you have two cylinders on each bank firing consecutively per sequence, as in R-L-R-L-L-R-L-R. That means that on the left bank you have 180-90-180-270 degrees of separation, and on the right bank you have 180-270-180-90 degrees of separation. Because there's one header for each bank, even with equal length headers, you still have exhaust pulses reaching the collector in uneven pulses. That gives you the uneven v8 rumble you hear from American or BMW/Mercedes v8's.
      Interesting notes on this:
      - If you've got a cross-plane v8, you can still make it sound like a flat-plane v8 by putting 180 degree headers on it. These are headers like on the GT40 where two cylinders from the left bank cross over to the right bank, and two from the right bank cross over to the left bank.
      - The Ferrari F136 v8 was used in Ferrari's, Maserati's, the Alfa Romeo 8C and the Gillet Vertigo. In the Ferrari's, like the F430 and 458, it uses a flat-plane crank, whereas in the other applications, the put a cross-plane crank in it. Listen to the difference between a Ferrari F430 and a Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale, similar engine, different crank configuration and completely different sound.
      - The BMW S63 v8 in the F10 and F90 M5 uses a hot V with unequal length 180 degree headers (look at a photo to see what I mean). If you listen to the 550i compared to the M5, you can pretty clearly hear that the 550 sounds like a traditional V8, and the M5 sounds really weird.

    • @White_Night_Demon
      @White_Night_Demon หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ScottGroome So what would unequal length long tube headers do to a crossplane v8 if it's already got uneven pulses make that low rumble? Make it rumble even more? Like window/house shaking throaty rumble level like on some cars I've noticed idling at stop lights or just idling near your house?
      I dont know... SLq5UTJBhK0 and y2fREOoFtGU sound pretty close....the former being the 550i and the latter being the f90.... What would make it sound even better is if it had a blow off valve for that shhh sound or one of those blown superchargers with the nice gilmer belt whine....mmmm.......or both if you can somehow fit both in...

      What I did here was I already had the headers and their J pipe, and just reused their flanges. HOWEVER, I soon found out they were incredibly warped, so I switched over to a set of v-bands, which have held up great so far.

    Are you using a wide band for each bank?

      It wouldn't be cheap, but I'd definitely consider doing it. Biggest challenge is not having the car on hand to test fit everything as I go.
