  • We're encountering some of our biggest challenges on the British canals as we navigate from England to Wales on the Llangollen Canal. Join us as we attempt the Grindley Brook Staircase Locks, the Chirk Tunnel, and the UK’s highest aqueduct, Pontcysyllte. But those aren't our only canal adventures, we face a few surprise challenges along the way.
Enjoy part 2 of us figuring out narrowboating!

Thank you and very true! I actually still worry about driving on the opposite side of the road, but luckily Andrew has gotten that down and does all the driving in the UK. The canals were a bit tricky for the first couple days. Fortunately it's much easier to learn when you're only going 1-4 mph 😆

We are on our 4th visit in our narrowboat, which we have owned for 14 years. I am always delighted by the reaction of our American friends when they tackle narrowboating for the first time. I think our canal system is a great way to see the UK. As well as Llangollen (clangothlenn), you can moor in York, Birmingham, Gloucester, Bristol, Manchester and London, all accessed via the canal system.
Just please remember to slow down past moored boats😊

Such a great way to see the UK and very unique for us Americans. The boats in Florida are much different! I think "slow down to one tick at moored boats" was maybe the only thing we retained from our quick lesson from the hire company 😆Happy boating to you! Cheers!

So relaxing to watch, but maybe stressful for the man on the tiller! I loved the canal side market - how great to find that. Happy Belated Birthday, Megan! With friends I walked over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and a narrowboat was waiting to cross and offered us a lift back! Wow! Yes please! The side with no railing was scary, so well done for keeping a steady hand on the tiller.

Crossed this in 1960 in two open dinghies with ten sea scouts . Freeboardwas about 3 inches as the trough was full . The footway was in a poor state with gaping holes, some about ten foot long . Meant we could look down both sides !! ❤😂 Llangollen was crowded with moored boats so had to scull over the transom . Old gentleman called he had not seen that skill practiced for 30 years 😅

Fantastic. I really enjoyed this. I live in the town next to the floating market. Solved my date query. I fish some of this area so spend time by the cut frequently aswell as walks. I thought you were handling the boat fantastically well( compared to some!). It's always interesting to here the many accents and languages of those who come to enjoy the Waterways. Well done on crossing the Fron aqueduct and reaching Llangollen. There is an area by road close to the canal where crossing the border is frequent, in an out of Wales. By the way the 'which' towns of Cheshire are Salt mining towns as the Cheshire plain is very low-lying and as such is a Salt plain. It gives the local Cheese its traditional flavour.
    Well done guy's 😊

People who sit by locks watching the boats go through are affectionately known as "gongoozlers".
Have you got your sealegs yet? I'm not joking, narrowboats rock from side to side a lot, and after a while you'll be unable to walk in a straight line on dry land (and that's going TO the pub).
