Well there is toxic positivity. He's not wrong about that. Another story had a character named Ava that was a poster child for it. Feigning positivity to use you for what they want. I see it a bunch in rp circles. But yea most likely not the case here. He seemed to be the issue.

ItsRemRem's comment at @24:26 hit the nail right on the head, the story is missing tons of pieces, in OP's versions of the stories things seem to just happen out of the blue. Also OP tends to judge and label others without giving valid reasoning.

  • @Extremely_Casual

As an FC leader of almost 8 years, I can tell OP is a bit oblivious to the way they say things to others, and they don't register that they've done something wrong. However -- the communities they are part of aren't exactly telling them what the issues are so they can be corrected. (Not that FCs should be responsible for teaching people how to behave, but they *should* be responsible for making clear what is and is not tolerated in their spaces.)
Community and Communicate have root words for a reason -- to have a community, you need to communicate, and to communicate, you need some manner of community, no matter how small. Both OP and the Communities they were part of should have been more open with their problems and issues. That alone would have resolved a lot of strife long term.
But I do agree with OP that there is a fair amount of toxic positivity in the 14 community. (By which I mean, people getting so sensitive to something that is even remotely insulting, no matter the context surrounding the subject or people involved in the discussion, and treating *any* manner of negativity, even constructive criticism, as something bad or toxic.)
I don't think that quite applies in this situation though. There really wasn't a good example of that sort of behavior in most of the stories. I agree with @carrillmunnings525 that a lot of these tales seem chopped out of details.

tbf, people these days have a thin skin, they get hurt about the most silly things and instead of talking about it like adults they prefer to pretend everything is okay and then just ghost it.
i had a dungeon run where the tank got butthurt coz he/she died first pull and i said tank, put on ur emnity skill. and he/ she was like dont tell me what to do, and left -_-
but just generally irl ppl cant talk anymore when shit gets real, sometimes when u point out stuff they take it as a negative and cant cope with that, while u just say it to like help them i guess.
im not saying OP doesnt have any issues but eeh i can imagine me getting in the same situations as him because i just tell it how it is and ppl dont like that, they prefer to live in their lil safe space.
its not being negative, its being realistic, and alot of ppl are like too positive about everything, wich isnt realistic. might be what he means with toxic positivity.

Even tho I don't think OP is innocent in ANY WAY I somehow can relate to this story. FFXIV is a great game which I came back to a few times over the years, but as a solo player mostly and just for the story - NOT for the MMO part of the game. I joined a few FCs, never clicked with anybody, talking to people generally feels like walking on eggshells and kind of immature. All other games (YES WoW included) I've played with either IRL friends or quite qickly found people ingame, some of them became IRL friends too. To this day I really don't know what it is about the FFXIV community ...connections seem mostly forced, fake (-positive) or based on erotic stuff😅 but on a positive note: it's ok - to each their own ♥ this way everyone finds their online home (that rhymes)

I would still LOVE to see the story from the FCs perspective. Maybe they find this video and are like "Hold up! OP left out way too much, let us explain this", because I still feel like OP left out a lot, so that OP doesn't look as bad as OP already does.
I also still don't like how OP talked about autistic people. They are now annoying -_-!
And the whole hamster situation was frustrating to listen to. Not because of your reading, but because of the story itself. Just because someone names their pet a certain way, doesn't mean the name is referring to the thing you think of. I for example love the name Fiona, so let's for example say my Chocobo is named Fiona and someone is talking to me and asking me if I like Shrek. I would immediately be like, no, but I like Adventure Time. A name can be a reference to multiple media or even none, since not everyone knows the same characters as you do. OPs reaction was so out of line there, geez...
And last but not least. Saying that everyone in the FF14 community overreacts, while OP themselves overreacted multiple times, is just hilarious to me.

My understanding of of people calling out toxic positivity in FFXIV is when people try to, for instance, encourage a player who's doing poorly and tells others to let them play how they want. People are often discouraged from giving advice - even friendly, constructive advice - because it is considered toxic by some, so they get annoyed at people being like "You got this! You're doing your best!" So whenever someone complains about toxic positivity, I tend to think they got told off for telling someone they suck at the game.

  • @jaearnell
    @jaearnell 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The way OP throws around 'toxic positivity' and says things like 'I limited my interactions to avoid triggering people until we knew them better' (and maybe even the fact they are a WoW raider/LoL player...) makes me think they're at least PART of the problem, even if they don't see it and own up to it. Yes, FCs have drama and some don't have good conflict resolution and some don't communicate expectations to members well... but, I feel like the OP is used to a very different game culture (perhaps something more like WoW, where making political incorrect jokes, using slurs jokingly all the time, and being an asshole to new players is kinda the norm from my prior experience) and doesn't understand how FF14 is different, so labels it as 'toxic positivity' everywhere.
Also, you don't sound like you're giving off toxic positive for being level-headed, reasonable and non reactive when it comes to things Pathra. As long as you don't take it too far and let people walk all over you, those qualities are fantastic in a person. lol

    • @jaearnell
      @jaearnell 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Toxic positivity is an issue in some communities (the new age community is one who suffers it bad lol), and being so positive you're bordering on delusional and you shoot down letting people express their hurt, or "negative" emotions reasonably is damaging. But I find most of the time when people are calling it out like OP is, it's because they're toxic people with no self awareness of their issues, and it's used to blame others. Kinda like when white folks that are also racists gets called out and start trying to claim 'reverse racism' is a thing... 😫🤦

Sounds like this guy that was in my FC for like a week and left, refused to join our discord and complained about us not communicating enough. Even though our hours of play are listed, and we are active. Then went on a tangent that there were not enough males playing and lack of rp... *Side eyes*

OP is reminding me of why i left WoW that attitude is exactly it. I really was afraid of this infecting FF after others came on over from there during WoWs shadowlands expansion. I didnt want that attitude to come over to FF and become commonplace. Also i am sick of people saying "Toxic positivity" when i grew up in 90s and 00s where respect and not constantly being negative was commonplace. The negativity is why its a problem to interact with people.

The title "All my FC's suck and dont know why" already did sound strange and red flag like. Maybe the op should think about the possibility that not everyone else sucks but maybe the OP does at times atleast? If everyone kicks me out whereever i go, i would reflect atleast in parts on myself instead of blaming the whole world around me. ^^

This level of social ineptitude is unfortunately very common in BDO. When all people do in that game is grinding in circles several hours a day, it definitely damages their ability to muster any meaningful conversations outside of "get rekt nerd" or "you're dogsht uninstall the game." I find it kind of hilarious that people immediately blamed WoW when this screamed BDO for me. xD

How can an FC be filled with Toxic positivity? An FC is for gaming. It's a gaming community. People enjoy video games, so it only makes sense they wouldn't really want drama or traumadumping present in their source of entertainment. I mean, there's a time and a place for it. And It shouldn't be in public with people wanting to have fun. Pretty sus imo.

If i'm being completely honest, I also have a huge problem with the FFXIV community as a whole. I love the game, and I think there can be some genuinely nice people, but there is so much drama dumping on a constant basis. It's like everyone wants to argue and views themselves as better than others. In terms of toxic positivity, it's almost like a dick measuring contest on who's the nicest and best person to be around, even though at the end of the day, they're all manipulative and self-entitled people. There are so many people who can't take a joke, can't take any form of criticism, and they want absolutely no negativity in any form, even if the "negativity" is in the form of helping people improve.
A huge part of this is because of how the lgbtq+ community as a whole interacts with both each other and those outside of it. FFXIV has a large lgbtq+ community proportionally to other games. Due to the nature of their concepts of "everyone is equal and can do anything anyone else can do" and "you can't tell me how to live my life", if you say one negative thing, it gets blown out of proportion. I will state, I have no qualms or issues with anyone wanting to do whatever they want with their lives. I don't judge others based on their own life choices...but if you come into an open space where there are plenty of people who have differing opinions and viewpoints, you can't act like a spoiled brat and assume you should get everything you want all the time or that other people can't have opinions. Also, when someone says something that's seen by you to be negative, maybe look at it from a viewpoint other than your own. They may be just trying to help. If you don't want help, just say so, but you don't need to be obnoxious about it. Stop acting like children. Most of these people are in their 20s or 30s and they're acting like toddlers. My 10 year old daughter has more self control and understanding.

OP is a problem sure, but I’m not sure if he’s the problem. He is rather judgmental and prejudiced in some places for sure and people are likely not liking him for that. And definitely doesn’t think before he speaks. But also some other people do sound like they were gunning for him, but how much is true and how much is rationalisation is another thing

this reminds me of the dunning kruger effect, this person is too stupid to comprehend that he is the problem.
sends in this story basicly telling everyone that he is a very bad/toxic person with zero selfawareness.
maybe this comment/s will make him realize it, but i dont think so.

Nah OP was kind of in the wrong but they werent completely at fault. They had a point about "Toxic Positivity" as they call it but I think what they mean is that people are way too easily offended and quick to assume and go with the nuclear option. It has literally happened in multiple stories where there is a small misunderstanding or disagreement or someone says something another does not like and all goes to hell. OP may not be innocent but they arent completely the problem either.

I've played 14 with my husband since 2014. These stories make me feel so validated in that we are pretty soloist. We rarely interact with other players unless the game makes us. We formed and kept our own fc. We even have tells turned off. We know our own reaction to hostilities and we have no desire to lose our accounts over petty online drama.

Actually, I'm all with OP. I find EN FCs and communities to be quite carebear-ish, and they cannot in any way shape or form tolerate any kind of jokes/criticism/anything that is "negative", even opinions that are common sense doesn't seem to land good and are seen as negativity. I don't understand what is it with the western culture and it's hive-mind like thinking that forces people to suppress their negative emotions or opinions that might "offend" people. Over here in Tonberry, not a lot of people care about feelings, and people can joke about everything and anything. You have an opinion? Voice it. If it hurts, then it hurts, and people get over it pretty quickly.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get flagged for this, but it is what it is, and this is my opinion. This story makes me want to share my own drama story that happened when an NA gay guy came to Tonberry, and joined our gays only CWL, and caused drama within 10mins of joining.

toxic positivity is pretty much going above and beyond to be a "safe space" but making sure you are mindful of any and all triggers some folk can have.. to a unhealthy degree and that any small offense unintentional or otherwise is met with toxic behavior and fights. Pretty much positivity to a unhealthy level that you don't welcome things like sadness or anger that those are bad feelings to feel.. that everything must be positive all the time.

In my opinion: Meowy was OP's side piece, and when she got back together with the old BF he was upset. Then OP changed servers cause Meowy was about to tell her truth and annihilate OP's relationship. In the two other stories, OP being a dick or fumbling the convo, and feeling dispirited after taking the L.
