I worked for Honda when they started recruiting line workers to hand build the most recent NSX. The prerequisites to apply were pretty insane. If I remember correctly, you had to have had at least a minimum of 20 years of assembly experience to even be considered. Those cars are incredibly well-built by the absolute best Honda has to offer.
I drove a 2016 NSX and I absolutely loved it. It handles well for it's size and weight, the sound is great, nice fit and finish. And not to mention the Honda reliability and having something that any enthusiast will see you in and give you the nod. They know you have good taste when you drive an NSX. Fantastic driver's car.
What exactly is the difference? Same mass produced engine, same paint, same interior, no? I’m trying to find what the added value is, please someone explain, thanks!
@@ItsAlive111 that is the benefit - a mass produced, but well known engine -> Imagine a super car that is actually reliable and can be maintained as a normal person. If a McLaren, Ferrari, Lambo breaks down, which they will, it is an absolute nightmare. On top of that, the NSX still has the capabilities of those supercar brands...
@@DanVibesTV Mmm crazy talk, just because it’s a Honda doesn’t mean it’s by any means going to be “cheap” to repair. So stow that crap 💩. Performance isn’t cheap stop dreaming.
exactly. hate when he calls out stuff and the market gets even more competitive than it already is. Cars & Bids listings go too high as a result of getting all enthusiasts togetherx
You can't see what he is doing????? Come on guys, one of the reasons he does this is to hype up his own intrest and investments....eg.....aka Cars and Bids. Using his platform to generate the hype.
The MINI Cooper S is criminally underrated, aside from reliability. My sister used to have a 2014 with a convertible and 6 speed manual. Boy was that car fun to drive
I have a 2012 mini coup w JCWs accents that I drive nearly everyday because it’s a manual and fun in the city. In 3+ years of ownership I’ve had 0 issues. I almost never drive my M car simply because I don’t get thrills around town.
A car that has the unreliability of the Mini cannot be underrated. It’s completely irrelevant how it drives when not broke down if it’s always broken! My sister in law, my best friend’s husband both have one and they are ALWAYS in the shop! Buy a MX5, lighter, nearly as fast, handles better and rock solid reliability
@@particleinthewave8378 I guess what I mean is that if you know what you're getting into reliability-wise and aren't going to daily it, a mini cooper s would be a really fun car to own. I still have fond memories of cruising on shoreline roads back when my sister owned the car. But yeah for most people a Miata would be a better option

It's so funny, I loved seeing the E60 M5 make an appearance here because I owned one from 2016-2021. It was a 2007 model year, it had the 6-speed manual transmission, and the only thing I ever did was upgrade the exhaust system. I bought it with ~55k miles and added about 60k miles in my ownership. Matter of fact, I even sold that car on carsandbids last September when it was finally time to part ways with her. Problems I experienced with that car? Absolutely none. All the documentation around the rob bearing issues, I never had a single issue with it in my car. I like to attribute this to the fact that I bought one of the few manuals that came through the states. In the end, it was time for something new, but boy do I miss that car. It was sluggish in the corners, but god what a straight-line rocket ship that car was. I live in Dallas where we have amazing new highways, and I'm not ashamed to admit that the downshift from 6th to 4th in conjunction with the nearly 9k redline is something I'd enjoy regularly.... What a dream. Miss that car. Great video as always, Doug!
I bought one recently (manual as well) and it’s definitely a unique car and I don’t think you could get any other car with the same experience that car offers
I'm right there with you on the Mini Cooper S. I'm a muscle car guy, who drives a Ram 2500 on 40 inch tires regularly. And I bought a 2014 Mini Cooper S and I've absolutely fallen in love with the car. It damn near handles as well as some of my past more expensive cars. It might not be as fast as my Corvette was or my GXP, but it always puts a smile on my face. Recently drove it from Boise, Id to Phoenix and back. So much fun. And my Corvette couldn't do 31mpg while sloshing through Nevada mountain roads.
For the new category I want to add the Camaro. It's selling so poorly, every month we get rumors about it being cancelled. Have only heard good things about the platform and it punches well above its price in any trim. Kia Forte GT manual/Hyundai Elantra N Line: These 2 have the same formula as the Civic Si could be a cheap enthusiast bargain. Jetta GLI: I never see them around but they are cheaper than a GTI fully loaded and have plenty of space.
@@SpyderRacing Yea I remember back in 2015-2016 motortrend tested an SS against an M4. It outdid it in almost every aspect. The BMW fans were coping hard.
Bro the GLI is facts, literally no one talks about how much of a deal that car is for everything it has to offer I knew it wasn't gonna be on this list but I was rooting for it anyway lol (Yes I have a Jetta but I would be saying this anyway)
As a 2019 F56 MINI JCW owner, I have to say it is a very underrated car. It handles insanely well in the corners, and surprisingly fast. However I do agree that it is a bit lacking in power, which is why I am considering to put a tune and upgrade the intercooler. I used to own a '12 Cooper S with the Peugeot 1.6 engine. Very fun and nippy car, quite fast too at the time for a hatchback. But reliability was questionable, and ended up breaking down in the end. Doug's mention on the Cooper S really made my day because it's about time the F-generation MINIs get more publicity.
As a former mini tech and current bmw tech, I gotta agree with your two choices on the M3 and Mini Cooper S. The mini specifically is a super fun car to drive around, it handles like it’s on rails. For as cheap as it is you get a considerably good quality of car. As for reliability, older minis and their engines weren’t the best however the newest engines have been pretty reliable so far. As for the Tesla I gotta disagree. They may be fast and handle okay, but their build quality is absolute garbage. Horrible panel alignment from factory, malfunctioning electronics, and poor quality parts are only a few things wrong with teslas. I know someone who works as a Tesla tech and he says they have to constantly replace control arms. Like multiple a day on multiple cars. Clearly they’re doing something wrong.
For the control arms they are making a silent recall due to a bad lubrication of a ball join (outsourced pieces ). malfunctioning electronicsi'm not aware of that. can you explain what are the problems? My2cents i don't give a shit of panel gaps and other minor problems, if the car is half the price for the same performance it's a bargain! Between a brand new 130k$ BMW M3 and Tesla model 3 performance at 70k$ there is no discussion. only the 1% will pay double the price to just have the pleasure to look at perfect alignment.... You are complaing about the tesla but the Mini Cooper is also a very very cheap made car: interior is kinda nice looking (if you like this neo-retro fashion) but only from far away.....
@@plop31 There was a youtuber (I forgot their name but the video exists somewhere) that got a brand new Tesla model Y and almost instantly had electronic issues. One of the rear doors wouldn’t open electronically, the window stopped working, and it took multiple weeks and multiple tries to fix said issues because the tech didn’t get it right first try/couldn’t properly diagnose the issues. This is just one example but many examples exist out there from customers if you decide to look into it. As for the Mini Cooper, yeah the interior is a bit plasticy but it’s better than something like a Tesla which feels like it was made out of cardboard. The quality of interior materials and build is really poor in Teslas which cause them to squeak and creak nonstop. I can’t say the same about mini coopers. For the price and the enjoyment factor I’d definitely say minis beat Tesla any day of the week, especially one with a manual transmission
I own a mini countryman S They have gotten lot more reliable since they supercharged back then The turbos are lot less likely to break, and with that provides excellent fuel efficiency and good practicality with a fun experience. Minis are selling in massive numbers cause they provide a great package. As for the AWD models countryman and clubman, great fuel, more room and of course all wheel capability. Ive owned mine 2 years bought used, no issues. My brother's ford is having more problems lol
While on vacation last year my rental vehicle (a base level altima) was not available, so we were upgraded to a John Cooper Works Mini for free and wow. The handling felt well planted and precise, the engine was zippy and responsive. I had driven an '02 na Mini before and had fun with it, but the new JCW model sold me on the fact that Mini can make a serious car that is still true to the fun Mini ethos
As an owner of a 22 Mini Cooper S, it is an omega fun quick little car that dodges through traffic really nicely with basically no blind spots, is quicker than Doug says, and still gets above 30 mpg (as long as you don’t drive it like i do). I just moved house, and I didn’t even have many issues with loading because you can fold down the rear seats and have a lot of space.
Every Mini S owner I’ve met speaks in terms of which turbo number they’re on. This it’s 3rd. It’s 5th. It’s 2nd. Unless the turbo detonated and then they speak of which engine they’re on. The JCW engines seem more robust.
Anytime you want to review the TTRS, I'll hand you my keys! It's such an underrated car and I kind of love that. It feels exclusive because it's so rare, and it's fun, lots of fun.
Had my F56 Mini Cooper S (3rd gen) for 5 years now with no mechanical issues. Only issue I've had was a smell from the AC vents due to a condensation catchment tray. Seem a lot more reliable from that gen on. Also added an NM Power Module to increase the turbo boost. Probably at around 215-220hp, which makes it quite nippy and fun for a lightweight manual hatchback.
Yep agree 100% on 3rd gen Minis. My spouse and I have a F54S (B46 engine) Clubman and F57 convertible with the B38 3 cylinder i8 engine- both stick- and they are fantastic cars. Fun, tossable and have been reliable. They both feel well made with excellent ergonomics. I think the 1st and 2nd gen Minis had issues and expensive maintenance costs that soured people to the brand. Like the majority of European cars, you need to take care of your Mini- they are not appliances like souless Toyotas 😁. I DIY both our Minis and can't be happier with ownership. Honestly can't see myself owning anything else that balances fun to drive with unique personality. Just joyful cars to own!
Not sold in the US but I believe the Alpine A110 is a very underrated sport car ; I love the ethics, it is all about weight and handling and not so much about raw power, I find them very elegant truly
You mentioned two cars that I adore and I owned one of them and miss it dearly. I had a MINI John Cooper Works with a manual, it was tuned for 300hp and was a blast to drive. What a great car. The other one on the list that I lust after, is the Audi TTRS, like you said the first generation with the manual. Such a cool car and I will add another car to your list from Audi. The RS4, with the Lamborghini engine and manual transmission.
Thanks Doug for your choice of the early PORSCHE Boxster as an underrated car. I love my 2000 base BOXSTER and feel it truly deserves some recognition as a wonderful and affordable sports car.
I’m halfway through university (Mechanical engineeeing) and I currently drive the ‘09 Mini Cooper S convertible. The current JCW hardtop seems like the perfect post college first car. The fun I am familiar with for a mini, new tech, warranty, all for $40k for a fully specced out JCW. Of course, I’ll have to wait till I get an engineering job to see what I can afford
@@OpeoAslam not sure when it started but the e34 540i had engine sound put through a speaker in the drivers footwell there was also a microphone in the engine bay
For those who don’t want to watch the whole thing, New Cars: 1. BMW M3 2. Ford Mustang GT (Manual) 3. Mini Cooper S 4. Subaru WRX 5. Tesla Model 3 Performance Used Cars: 1. Acura NSX (2017) 2. Audi TTRS (2012-2013) 3. BMW M5 (E60) 4. Ferrari California 5. Porsche Boxster (986)
New Cars: 1. Don't care if it's good. It's ugly and not the good kind of ugly. 2. Way too common. Hard to stand out. 3. For good's sake, Mini, make an AWD one already that isn't an SUV. 4. Hard pass, and I love Subarus. 5. The words "underrated" and "Tesla" don't belong in the same sentence. Ever. Old Cars: 1. Just never appealed to me. Still doesn't. 2. Not bad. I like a good TT. 3. Kind of the beginning of the end for good Beemers for awhile, but not that bad. 4. Always loved the California. Just definition of underrated. Not a fucking Tesla. 5. Timeless future classic. Like this more than the later models.
Thank-you sir for mentioning the E60 BMW M5!!! A well sorted M5 which I've owned for 5yrs now is a good thing! Yes...I've spent moolaa on it making sure it stays on the road, but it was worth it! People are shocked to even see it on the road let alone running! People seem to love the E90 series M3s (which I owned as well 2011 M3 sedan w the comp pack)but forget that there essentially the same thing! They hand the same issues...maybe parts are a less. I'm sure that these will start to be looked at in the not so distant future as the next M classic!
I occasionally drive my son's gf's car just for kicks. Agree that it's a very fun car to drive, maybe the most fun car I've driven since the 65 MGB my dad rebuilt and gave to me when I was a kid. Maybe even more fun if I take off my nostalgia specs lol
Never would I have imagined Doug would talk about the mk2 TT-RS. I love that car and it’s so rare that I can barely even find content about it on TH-cam.
I can't believe Doug changed my opinion on the Mini Cooper. Honestly haven't seen a newer in my area but it looks badass for a mini. I gonna say I would switch the Mustang with the Camaro I hardly hear any love for the camaro and It is a badass car handles great looks great and you can build one any way you want. the Mustang and challenger get all the and attention. my crappy 2 cents
@@Sir.VicsMasher They are temporarily paused due to supply chain constraints. Only for the 2023 model year hopefully but it will depend on a few factors.
If you want a mini prior to when they went full BMW, I'd recommend getting one with the n18 engine, such as those from 2009 to 2013 I think. Far more reliable than the other second gens and better than the first gens. You can find them for a reasonable price and there are a few warranties extended until 120,000 miles
I own a 2019 MINI John Cooper Works and it’s great. I love that car, it’s so fun to drive and it’s my daily car. I tested a MINI Cooper S and a MINI Cooper (3 cylinder engine). The MINI Cooper drives well, the Cooper S drives still better than that and the JCW… well, it feels great. Now… a friend of mine drives a Camaro and my brother drives a 2015 Mustang, I think the Mustang drives better, but the Camaro is so cool too.
I recently purchased a 2023 mini cooper s 4 door and I must say it is a very fun car to own and drive. The interior is very high quality and tasteful and has a lot more features than most other cars in its price range. It's also quite quick and handles beautifully. The sport mode really makes a difference if you want to drive harder, but it's also a very pleasant and easy car for daily commuting and just overall livability. It's honestly a great bargain if you having a car that's fun to drive is something you care about.
I've owned a 2011 Mini for close to 5 years now. While I'll still stand by it being my favorite car thus far and probably forever. I've put thousands into the car to keep it driving. From being stuck on the side of the road 5 times now, the insane repairs, being turned away from a few garages for an oil change even. It's the perfect car, if you're able to maintain it very regularly.
My 2013 JCW Clubman is criminally under-rated. Repairs get expensive, but they’re stupid quick, handle better than most on the road, and look fantastic.
We had a 2011 clubman S that I ran out of patience for. Came up for a clutch and they quote me like 5500 for that and some oil leaks. I said screw it, sold it as-is. Fun car, no doubt but holy hell with the drivetrain
Yep, so true. Had my 2010 Cooper S for 4 years. Put thousands of euros in it until the engine eventually blew up. But when it worked, it was hugh fun. Have 3 F56 in the family right now. Yes, they are still more fun than the competitors, but just not comparable in terms of performance and fun to the previous generations.
Over the years I've had so much changed hoping it would be the last major repair. From two transmissions (1st replace had warranty), blown turbo, front axel, to full: suspension, struts, calipers, rotors. Also had an issue with a failed light module; the BMW dealer found 9 new left all in Germany, so mine was pulled from a wrecked car, and poorly programmed when installed. It's now paid off fully and sitting outside till it sells.
I agree so much on the Mini Cooper! I drove a John Cooper Works recently with the 6-speed and it was a blast. Unfortunately they are no longer offering the manual, so it's either very recent model used or a pass for me. I really enjoyed my time in the WRX as well, and it makes a ton of sense at the Premium trim level. I think it's not quite nice enough for the pricing on a Limited and definitely not nice enough for GT pricing. But it's still in my finalists because I live in Minnesota and driving a WRX in winter seems awesome. Why they put summer tires on it stock is beyond me though. I'd replace those immediately. If I remember right, the Top Gear guys (the good ones, that is) hated the E60 5-series, but Clarkson LOVED the M5. So it's not completely underrated. The Tesla surprised me on this list, the only track video I've seen for that model was done by the Throttle House guys and it really isn't set up for that kind of driving. Also, I'd rather have cancer than a Tesla, but that's an individual thing. What a fun video, Doug! This is my favorite you've done!
I used to mock the mini relentlessly. Then my 49 year old mother bought a 2021 2-Door John Cooper Works model with a 6speed. That car was faster then it had any right to be and was wild in the corners. Was very sad to see it go!
I bought a 2018 John Cooper Works manual in British Racing Green with black roof and stripes last year. This thing is absolutely incredible! And when you put the JCW Pro valved exhaust on it then it becomes the best sounding modern turbo 4 hands down. People don't realize how enthusiast oriented the car really is. It even has magnetic adjusting suspension and ginormous Brembos. And yet it can still pass as classy enough for the valet to pick up and a black tie event. Doug is completely right that it should not be over looked!
I have an Audi TT 2008. I am absolutely in love with it, and I couldn’t be happier! I’m glad that I chose a car that didn’t shoot up in price during the last year or so. I think the handling is great, the engine is solid, and the interior is fairly nice. I drove it on Angele’s Crest and it was one of the best drives I’ve ever had! :)
The Mustang Ecoboost with a manual transmission is also very underrated. 300+Hp and a six speed manual transmission for about the price of a GR86/MX5. And they're bigger than both those cars, so more interior space for people who are 6' or taller.
@@WarrenF thanks for that reply…..I’ll never think an eco boost mustang is good, that frame was always meant to be propelled by a big v8, putting a 4cylinder in such a big car is just nonsense
I got a 986 S with a 6-speed about a year and a half ago for $12k. Could not believe how incredibly fun of a car it was to drive, and a mid-engined manual 2 seater at the price seemed like a no brainer. I know they’re a bit more pricey now, but i would ABSOLUTELY recommend for anyone who is looking for something fun to throw around corners. Also at 250 hp it’s no slouch either.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 please. 🙄 My MINI is heavily modified. Full bolt ons. Suspension. Everything you name it, I’ve done it. I’ve put over $20K in mods into that car. My dad and I do most of the work (I get my love of cars from him). I’ve spent maybe a 1K in repairs so far. But I am happy to help support you with your line of work from time to time because I make enough as it is. I don’t worry about that. I work in the optical field and you wouldn’t be able to to your job unless you can see. I just bought my wife an Alfa Romeo (I’m more worried about that breaking down)
I have a 05 Cooper S manual with basic bolt ons, 17% pulley, 0% crank pulley, Alta intake, Invidia exhaust, BC coilovers, polyurethane bushings etc... This car has been amazing and most fun car I've owned from 20+ cars over the years. I also work on it myself for all the mods and maintenance so it's just like any other car. Awesome little car
One car I think should've been on Doug's list is the W205 C43 AMG. A lot of people sleep on this car due to the C63 existing but Mercedes absolutely nailed this car. The 3.0 V6 has so much character and the exhaust note is outstanding for 6 cylinders. You have a fantastic interior and whether you have the sport seats or performance seats both are very comfortable for daily use and still function well for spirited driving. This car is able to be settled down when you want but once you start driving it aggressively the car reacts the way you'd want it to and basically urges you to drive faster. I actually own a C43 and actually enjoyed driving it more than a C63, couple it with a tune and you're holding up with the C63 in the straights.
Even the base model 3cyl Mini is fun to drive. It's surprisingly refined, even more so than some 4 cylinder cars and it handles like a go-kart. Other 3 cylinder cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Ford Fiesta are as refined as a food processor with spoons in it. I actually enjoyed the Mini more than a Honda Civic Si and Golf GTI
You’re totally right about the Mini, but even more so with the JCW version. I always used to hate on Mini, mainly because the price to performance ratio did not make any sense when compared to the GTI. Well…. Now that the GTI is a 40k fully optioned out, much like a JCW…. That argument goes out the window. I’ve owned a MK6 GTI and a MK7 Golf R. I can tell you that I had WAY more fun than either of those cars in my 2019 JCW.
Love my JCW. I live in Alpine country and need the Countryman ALL4 JCW for the winters. It's damn fun to drive. I do change the oil frequently (every 5K miles/ 8K Km), which the one thing to do in order to avoid problems long term. Had a Gen 2 Clubman R55 before this car. The kart-like driving experience is what turned me on to these Mini's.
To add on to what Doug said about the newer Minis, there's a ton of aftermarket support. Its pretty easy to get more power and better handling out of the cars!
As for the Mustang, I really hope it's more brought up tomorrow onwards, as its new gen debuting in September 14th 2022, might get the interest on that back, maybe some people will be interested in the new model, other ones on the old one because they might just not find the new one as good generally, but I think it might spark the interest on the model.
I agree with the rest of the list but how are the G80/2 M3/M4 and Mustang underrated? the Z and A90 Supra gets more press? I'am not sure which forum or community is Doug going but these are by far the most overhype cars I've been hearing, great cars, but definitely not underrated. Underrated for me are all the Lexus F models, old Infinity coupe (Nissan Skyline Coupe for me and ppl outside the USDM), Jaguar F-type and for a while now, the Audi R8 which have went quiet in the community since the 2nd gen debut.
The F cars hold their value pretty steadily, and those who appreciate them are still willing to pay for them. I think they're pretty well appreciated... now that they're mostly discontinued. I didn't like most of his list/choices though.
12:58 I completely agree, I wanted one for my first car, but it was a bit out of my price range so I went for a Manual 3.2 VR6 TT instead (only other way to get a TT with a stick in the US in the Mk2)
The M3 doesn't look as bad in person. The grille looks worse in pictures. Now, if only BMW wouldn't give the 4 and 8-Series coupes the side profile of the Mustang...
Went to a Subaru dealership here in Socal with the intention of getting a WRX. Spent some time walking around the dealership. There was nobody at the reception and no salesperson bothered asking me what I wanted or anything. Walked out after 10 minutes and drove home with a new Integra the same day.
How could you not include the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV. What an amazing car and so under rated by the buying public because they mistakenly assume they're unreliable.
My friend has a 19 Mini Cooper jcw and he absolutely loves it. When he went to go test drive it he thought it was not going to drive well at all and wasn’t considering buying one . Now he thinks it’s the best car he’s ever driven
As a 1998 Boxster owner, I can totally agree. I paid $8,500 for it several years ago, and it’s one of the best driving cars I’ve owned. People always think it must have cost at least $30k, and are always shocked at both how cheap it was and how old it is (they usually assume it’s a much newer car).
As an owner of 2019 Bullitt (so newest S550 gen until new one comes out in 3 days) and it is a fantastic daily driver, love the cold starts and burbly exhaust, but it also held its own on the track and then fantastic on a 12hr road trip. All that as a stock vehicle. 480hp and also 28+ mpg on a long trip. What's not to like??
Bro I love S550 Mustangs and also looking forward to September 14th!!!!!! Bro I’ve been waiting to see how the S650 would look so it could be my next dream car
Great to see an undervalued list! My dad had a Mustang GT when I was 16, and I remember it being so incredibly fun & sketchy to drive on twisty mountain roads. He bought the 2004 special edition 986 a few years later, and still drives it. It feels underpowered compared to today’s cars, but the handling is just so perfect. Really phenomenal car if your roads are extremely twisty. I have a Model 3 LR with acceleration boost now, and I’m really happy with it because I need a family car with cargo capacity that is still fun to drive. The new Model 3 Performance seems to solve a couple of my minor complaints - it has better seat bolsters and supposedly improved suspension.
I drove the previous M3 comp and the new one and the new one was such a let down. I remember driving the older one and loving how fun it was at low speed. The new is fast and all but is missing the fun factor.
I'd argue any Audi TT w/ quattro (including the mk1) is underrated. Despite a large following in the UK, no one talks about them in the US and MK1s can be had under $10k.
MK1 TT's are a guilty pleasure of mine, since I was a child in the 2000's. Nobody takes them seriously as sports cars but they do have a beauty to them reminiscent of European cars from the 60's. The one Doug reviewed a while ago, although a convertible, was a gorgeous thing. Later generations of the car kinda lost that aesthetic, although perhaps in favor of a more aggressive, "manly" vibe to them.
Well said about the Tesla. The model 3 Performance is a fun car to drive but is constantly looked over because it’s electric. Every time I hop in mines it always makes my day
Couldn't agree more. A lot of people who've never been in a tesla before says theyre quite boring and not really spry and don't handle well. Replaced my M3 daily with a model 3 performance and it's a pretty awesome car. While vehicles like the plaid steal the spotlight with it's absurd 0-60 times, at the end of the day the plaid's a big cruiser, a good car...but not as spry and eager as it's little brother!
I absolutely agree with you about the Mustang. it checks all the boxes for me. a V8, front engine, rear wheel drive, two door coupe. that looks good, and sounds great, and is fun to drive. for some it could possibly be a daily driver. not so much for me, a pickup truck would better fit that bill for me.
Very good synopsis Doug. Agree especially as I have an under 100,000 miles grandma driven full service history, all options manual JCW 2004 MINI I'm thinking of finally letting go so I can go EV...but I'm in AU.
I bought a mustang GT a few months ago manual amazing car absolutely love it. For the price I paid I don't think I could've got anything better performance wise.
THIIIIISSSSS is AWESOME! Please make more videos like this between the reviews! Car spoting is also cool! You only need better sound and sound treatment in your garage!
The interesting thing about this video is Doug nailed it for why most of these cars are unwanted. And as a 2017 WRX STi owner, the new WRX looks ugly with its cheap flat black plastic and grotesquely busy and discordant lines. Even if they made an STi and didn’t needlessly push the automatic, the new generation has so much ugliness tacked on that I still wouldn’t buy one. It’s that big of a turn off. Subaru has received all the feedback they need to fix this car, but haven’t made any changes yet. Regardless, several of these cars and a whole lot of others on the market now suffer from the 2020s styling malaise of gawdy aggressiveness over beauty or class.
That is, surprisingly, the most commonly displayed "way of the enthusiast". "It's ugly so I don't like it". Disregard driving characteristics, it won't fit enthusiast's purse so he can't be seen in one. Oh, the fun.
I have one and it definitely looks better in person than in pictures, and it drives really well. I understand that the WRX community prefers the older ones, but fans are turning their dislike into plain hate. And the proof is that only in English-speaking communities I've heard terrible things about it; on other channels they say "yeah, it's cool" and that's about it. Now, to be fair and to also discuss the negatives, I was disappointed on the black plastic panels that it has, although you do get over it pretty soon. The tech side is also lacking compared to most new cars; I wish it had more bells and whistles for the price. You can definitely tell that the Subaru engineers said "pretty please" to the Subaru execs, and they got their last chance at it, and had to make the most of what they had, so they chose quality over design, and had to reuse a bunch of stuff. All that said, it IS a fun, practical and well-made car for people who would swap fancy equipment for a better engine, 4WD and fun driving. AND most of all... non-car people won't say a bad thing about it--it's not like you're driving a minivan that _most_ people find totally uncool. If they even say anything about it--no hate, no terrible things, no complaints about the plastic--it's more like "oh wow, nice car, it looks fast!" and that's about it. It is really just enthusiasts who hate it, and I would invite them to consider it as what it is: a fun sedan by a small company that drives really well, at a decent price.
I actually prefer the Mini Cooper over other higher horsepower offerings because it is a 3-door and manual. In a world where more and more people have access to a personal vehicle, and where people have fewer and fewer children, we make cars with more doors and more seats. I find it laughable to be honest.
@@Sir.VicsMasher I understand your point perfectly. Personally, as a last resort I would buy a new vehicle, I do not see the purpose to pay taxes simply for a question of exclusivity, when I can find the same with one or 2 years of use, which usually does not generate wear to a vehicle. In fact if it will generate 2 years of wear and tear to a vehicle, it is because the vehicle is bad.
YES to the mini cooper. i drive a 2011 clubman s. i put a new exhaust system on it and it’s amazing. i can through it around corners, take highway on ramps at twice the speed and get oushed into my seat and due to the exhaust it pops and gurgles like an old school muscle car
I agree on the mustang except the manual MT-82 transmission is known to be a complete POS. So, Camaro SS over mustang GT. That’s why I bought the Camaro. It has a tremec and it’s fantastic
@@drunkpolack7612 exactly. The 10 speed is insanely good, but I didn’t want an auto. I originally wanted a mustang, but couldn’t get past the MT82. Couldn’t be happier with my Camaro, so it worked out.
Doug, I’ve been wanting a mustang for a while, and now you’ve raised the price as I was just getting into the ballpark of affording one. Thanks for that lol
I was happy to see the 986 boxster on here! I’m looking at an S model right now with about 67K miles on it. If all goes well, I could have it for under $10K very soon. Doug is right, do NOT sleep on these.
The Model 3 is well done in so many areas, people just don't realize how great a job Elon and his crew did on this one. To this day, no EV on the market can compete with its clever packaging and engineering no matter what brand or platform. Even those they were designed to be an EV from the ground up. You can legitimately gripe about some of the build quality issues, but I've seen new Toyotas with panel gaps that are no better. The TTRS is very lust-worthy and later versions would be a great second car to putt around in on weekends, but it also works well as a daily driver. The V-10 M5? Mmmmmm.... seems like you have to buy it twice, once for the car, again to fix the engine.
Missed the Fiesta ST... easily the most underrated enthusiast care of the last decade, and maybe ever. I've owned roughly 30 cars (from Subarus and VWs to Audis and Porsches), and apart from a Mazda Miata on just the right road, the Fiesta ST was easily the most fun to drive of all them.
I think one of a great underrated car is thr one I have. I am 17yo and got an old Infinity M35h and it's not that bad. although it's not manual, the engine has enough power and, when I want it to, it can become a GREAT comfort car! just my opinion tho!
I wouldn't say they are great values used anymore, (Thanks Doug!) a Fiat 500 Abarth will always be more fun than a Cooper. Also with a Fiat you only get horrible electrical issues, not horrible mechanical and electrical issues 😁
This is true, my Abarth has its quirks but it sounds better and looks better than the mini. Hell the 595s and 695s look better and are brand new in Europe
@@grig4866 I'm 6"1' and I have headroom to spare. Most of my height is in my legs, and while I wouldn't call it comfortable, my seating position doesn't leave me sore or anything.
I'm surprised not to see the 2005-2006 C55 AMG on the used list. You can find them in great shape for under $10k without much effort. They have a super reliable 5.4l m113 V8 and 722.6 5spd auto transmission (same as the NAG1 trans that was used in Chrysler products until 2017, sc V8 and tt V12 AMGs, Porsche 996 and 997 automatics including turbo cars, etc.). They also have coil springs - no air or hydraulic suspension to worry about. All of the issues are very well documented and generally easy to fix. Parts are cheap due to being shared with millions of other V8 MBs. They are an incredible value and generally get overlooked because they never came with a manual.
While I admit that I have a taste for questionably styled cars, the WRX looks good in person. It has a presence that denotes it as a higher quality product than the previous gen, imho.

I know 3 people who bought new mini, they visit the dealership every other month for repairs, all 3 of them, and they'll never buy it again
@@particleinthewave8378 I guess what I mean is that if you know what you're getting into reliability-wise and aren't going to daily it, a mini cooper s would be a really fun car to own. those underrated new cars doesn't look so underrated to me
It's so funny, I loved seeing the E60 M5 make an appearance here because I owned one from 2016-2021.

The Kia Forte GT is better with the DCT but I agree with everything you said.
@@SpyderRacing Yea I remember back in 2015-2016 motortrend tested an SS against an M4. It outdid it in almost every aspect. The BMW fans were coping hard.
Very true. As a Camaro ZL1 owner, this car is exceptionally capable against super cars on the street and on the track.
Camaro is ugly af. No wonder its not selling.

(Yes I have a Jetta but I would be saying this anyway)
Sound is bonkers too with the pro exhaust
Couldn't agree more
I owned a 2007 Mini Cooper S, I loved the car, interior was nice, it drove amazing but the car was criminally unreliable. Scared me out of the market
Did you say good quality? HAHAHA! They're always broken.

I just moved house, and I didn’t even have many issues with loading because you can fold down the rear seats and have a lot of space.
As a Mini Cooper S owner, thanks for the love Doug
I have a 2015 cooper S that has been heavily modified. The only time I was stuck on the side of the road was when I ran out of gas once 😅

Doug is completely right that it should not be over looked!
your mom has taste haha
I have an Audi TT 2008. I am absolutely in love with it, and I couldn’t be happier! I’m glad that I chose a car that didn’t shoot up in price during the last year or so.
I think the handling is great, the engine is solid, and the interior is fairly nice. I drove it on Angele’s Crest and it was one of the best drives I’ve ever had! :)
Put it on Cars and Bid and treat yourself to a nice evening my guy

The Mustang Ecoboost with a manual transmission is also very underrated. 300+Hp and a six speed manual transmission for about the price of a GR86/MX5. And they're bigger than both those cars, so more interior space for people who are 6' or taller.
The GR86 and MX5 are significantly lighter than the mustang
@@WarrenF and significantly slower and less comfortable
I know a lot of people hate on that Ecoboost but with a few bolt ons you can get to 400hp pretty easily. Is it the V8 heck no . But still a fun car .

As a MINI owner, this thumbnail makes me very happy. ☺️
As a mechanic, you owning a Mini makes me very happy. Cheers to well-funding my retirement.
I really enjoy these more conversational weekend videos Doug.
I actually own a C43 and actually enjoyed driving it more than a C63, couple it with a tune and you're holding up with the C63 in the straights.
everybody i know who has driven both prefers the 43
Even the base model 3cyl Mini is fun to drive.
Enjoy your youth, my friend.
Doug the kinda guy to turn underrated enthusiast cars to very rated ones
The mini will forever have my respect. I drove a tracked out supercharged one and it will always been one of the most rowdy cars I’ve ever been in
12:58 I completely agree, I wanted one for my first car, but it was a bit out of my price range so I went for a Manual 3.2 VR6 TT instead (only other way to get a TT with a stick in the US in the Mk2)
Definitely heavily interested in a Clubman JCW All4. I’m loving all the new Union Jack tails, and they have a great body for everything I need.
Get it! Minis are a blast!
We have a 2022 JCW Clubman. It’s a lot of fun. Very happy with the purchase.
The M3 is a really nice car. If only I didn't have to look at it.
The Mustang GT is one I'd love to own.
M3 just looks terrible
The M3 doesn't look as bad in person. The grille looks worse in pictures. Now, if only BMW wouldn't give the 4 and 8-Series coupes the side profile of the Mustang...

The M3/M4 doesn't look that bad in person though I'd still be waiting for an aftermarket grill modification...
100% agreed, way better than the model 3 or the M3
It looks beautiful and the sound is unmatched, great car
They’re not underrated - by enthusiasts. We all know the QF is awesome already.
My friend has a 19 Mini Cooper jcw and he absolutely loves it. When he went to go test drive it he thought it was not going to drive well at all and wasn’t considering buying one . Now he thinks it’s the best car he’s ever driven
Nothing underrated about a sports car with a monthly heated seat subscription, it deserves all the hate it gets.
It's like how Tesla puts DLC in their cars. The equipment is there, you just have to pay to unlock it.
I’m surprised Doug didn’t mention the Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifolio.

The new is fast and all but is missing the fun factor.
and on top of that it is GROTESQUELY FUGLY!
The nostrils on the bmw are awesome, it’s like a tribute to the old intake, I love em
Thanks for mentioning my 2020 Mustang GT!
I love that he put the CEL chime when the E60 came up 😂😂
This is why DOUG is GREAT! Wonderful segment!
My favorite part of the video was when Doug threw shade at the entire Z community 😂
For the price I paid I don't think I could've got anything better performance wise.
hahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The M5 flaw is the reliability, it’s a huge problem, it’s ugly, but it’s amazing! The engine was a beast (when it ran) and you could get it manual.
Doug: Ahh… that’s the base model Ferrari!
Doug: Okay… It’s the base model Ferrari… What’re you drivin… a Nissan Z?
Now I’ll press like. 😂
Have had my 2008 boxster rs60 for almost seven years now, absolutely love it! Thanks for the shout out!
10:10 - that's a Model S, Doug
Agreed , spot on, every car. 👍
Especially the 986 Boxster S so balanced fun to drive.
I actually prefer the Mini Cooper over other higher horsepower offerings because it is a 3-door and manual.
In a world where more and more people have access to a personal vehicle, and where people have fewer and fewer children, we make cars with more doors and more seats.
I find it laughable to be honest.
They dont make manual Mini's anymore.

That is true if you fit in somehow. I'm 6"3 and I was unable to find any feasible way to fit there comfortably to drive it :(
@@grig4866 I'm 6"1' and I have headroom to spare.
Enthusiast: "But it's a base model ferrari!!"
Doug: "What are you driving, a Nissan Z?"
Yikes, I took that personally
While I admit that I have a taste for questionably styled cars, the WRX looks good in person. It has a presence that denotes it as a higher quality product than the previous gen, imho.
