The Tilley hats dont have two neck straps, that second strap, the one with the knot on, tightens at the back of your head at the base of your skull. Unless its very windy, thats the only strap i use. When using them both the hat wont fall either backwards OR forwards off your head.

Good video for new sailors. I would also add three suggestions if kitting up properly -
    1) Wicking underwear to take sweat etc from the body
    2) A proper mid layer. I tend to sail more in my mid layer than i do in the wet weather gear- Keeps spray off and is warm and windproof and saves the GoreTex offshore gear for when it might actually be needed!
    3) Sailing gloves - especially if it's cold or if you're new to line handling. Even lightweight summer type gloves with leather palms will protect hands from the lines and getting sore .

Nice to see a video on kit! We have Musto foulies and use Duberry boots for foul weather - they are great. They are flexible, warm, fit to your feet and allow the fouls to do their job as well. Wellies just feel less comfortable. In the same way you said don't skimp on fouls, we'd say try Duberry's. Sealskinz hats and balaclava's are also great for colder weather, fingerless gloves and full finger gloves also essential and we'd recommend getting good quality ski/sailing base layers and then use multiple layers to allow you to peel off some after an active 5 mins on the winch! Enjoying your journey and thanks for sharing.

So many things to think about when buying clothing for sailing. I guess you learn as you go along but sure this is useful for newbies.

I suppose if you sail out of the UK the content has some amount of credibility. If you sail out of Queensland Australia all you need is a carton of beer a change of undies and another carton of beer. lol. If push comes to shove to shove forget the undies.
