  • In this edition of I Love 90s Basketball, Paul Pierce, Jay Williams, Jalen Rose, Kendrick Perkins, David Jacoby and Michael Wilbon relive the memorable moments from Shaquille O'Neal and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway when they were teammates on the Orlando Magic. Some of the moments include the 1993 draft-day trade that sent top pick Chris Webber to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Hardaway, (14:24) when a powerful Shaq dunk brought down the entire basket in Phoenix and (25:01) when the duo combined for 48 points to eliminate Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals.

What people don't know is that Penny was playing injured the entire 1996 playoffs and that led to him tearing his cartilage in the beginning of the 1996-1997 season. Maybe had Shaq stayed, the front office would have given more time for Penny to rest his knee instead of rushing him back on the court again.

@@razkable Penny and Shaq played well in the 95 finals, unfortunately the rest of the cast didn't. They were a young inexperienced team who got beaten by a team that was highly experienced (Rockets). On top of that Orlando also had a really bad head coach. A team with a 100% healthy Penny and Shaq should not be getting swept in the playoffs, it was a combination of inexperience and bad coaching. In 96 in the ECF against the Bulls it was injuries and bad coaching. At the end of the day it was growing pains. Orlando was eventually going to beat MJ and the Bulls but Penny suffered a serious knee injury in 97 and he was never able to recover from it.

Penny would have been in GOAT discussion. He had no weaknesses and wasn't even close to being in his prime when the injuries started.
    EARLY Careers:
Lebron: Couldn't shoot well mid-range or deep. Strongest
MJ: Shooting wasn't his strength. Decent mid-range, but didn't shoot the 3 due to era. Average court vision. Most athletic, best defender, and best finisher.
Kobe: Inefficient, not much a playmaker. Might be the hardest worker.
Penny: Best passer out of the 4. Best shooter out of the 4. Had the post game, mid-range, and deep. Just as athletic besides MJ. Could finish at the rim with the best of them.
There's no doubt he would have continued to develop and just gotten better. Sky was the ceiling. My guy Penny Hardaway.

Croatia mid 90s. Penny was literally most popular player in the NBA after MJ. And i think that goes for Europe as a whole. Champion stores and Footlocker in the Italian Trieste(closest to us back then) had to restock only two NBA jerseys every single month: MJ & Penny. And then the shoes...omg....International calls to Footlocker,Italy did they get them or not.....golden times of my childhood.

@@simple45679 Their losses in the playoffs from 1994-1996 were simply growing pains. Orlando had two franchise players in Penny and Shaq and that is why they were so good. But they had a bad coach, they were inexperienced. Penny was eventually going beat to MJ and the Bulls, but in the beginning of the 96-97 season Penny suffered a serious knee injury and was never able to recover from it.
