    It's really a good idea to heat the area of the PCB on the underside of where the IC is located to about 50degC below the solder melting point, and then use hot air at 30-50degC above the solder melting point on the top side of the IC. This causes the solder interface to reach the melting point much quicker dramatically reducing the stress on the IC. If you don't it takes considerably longer for the PCB side of the solder interface reach the melting point.

      Isn't there a way to blow the heat under the chip?

    • @etmax1
      @etmax1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@tricky778 The problem with that is that the amount of pressure needed to get sufficient air under there would blow chip off the board.

    Try to put the IC on PCB not exactly in its place, but with a minimal angular or axial bias. It helps to detect the moment of balls melting - then IC 'jumps' in its exact position with the help of surface tension forces of molten solder in flux puddle. This 'jerk' is a good, well noticeable marker which allows not to overheat the IC. Thanks for video, +1.

    Meticulous work - I'll tip my hat to ya. But generally with a square field chip you can use a generic square stencil. Even if the stencil pattern is a larger field. Just mask the stencil down in size with tape. Saves a ton of time and can save an aching neck.
    Keep up the good work.

    The chip in my plasma TV needed reballing. I was told that I could try reheating it with a hairdryer and may get a few more months out of it, if I was lucky.... I put a large chisel bit in my Metcal soldering station, and pressed down with lots of pressure on the chip. I also put solder on top of the chip to try and help transfer the heat. It worked and has been fine for over a year...

      I worked with iphones motherboards for a 5 years , it was much more difficult, cause the size of the components. For example the balls on the iphone 6/6s is 0.25 mm . And of course the size of the chip is really matters. That one i rebolled in the video is not so big, it is about 400-500 balls only . And i can say that this type of work is all about the practise. All you need is a good soldering station , hot air gun , balls, flux paste , solder wick , flux cleaner, some hand tols and practise pratctise practise.
      I have some troubles with the shooting of the video cause i dont have a camera, i record with my phone, but i do my best to make more videos. You can watch the video about fixing the oscilloscope, sorry for bad english, and the foreshortening is not good at all, but it was a reaaly good repair. Thank you! :)

    • @fixthetempo7276
      @fixthetempo7276  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. You need to put on a very very thin layer of flux to the chip. In this case your align tool will not take so much flux paste and the balls will stick to the chip. Then you should to solder the balls using hot air very low level. It is very important, because high level of hot air can easily blown off the balls. And finally the most important thing, you will never understand the process until you try it by yourself 😊

    Won't the chip get damaged with 390°? I've never had such a particular welding experience, but isn't it better heating the back of the PCB like a reflow plate?

    • @DciMaluko
      @DciMaluko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's better to heat it with a plate, yes. Sometimes you don't have that so you can use air. 390 is the temperature marked at the tool but I doubt the rework station is actually outputting that temp, and, if it is, the air is how the temp is delivered, so, you can control the tip height and take the air off the chip at the solder melting temperature

    • @DciMaluko
      @DciMaluko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, the board dissipates part of that heat, so, in reality, it must be around 300 at the contact point between chip and board

    • @fabriziobrutti1205
      @fabriziobrutti1205 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DciMaluko that's the point! The contact point may be at 300°C, but the chip (between the contact point and the tip) is much hotter due to its thermal resistance 🤔

    Shouldn't have left the pads like this. Take a look at the assembly stencils, they all have holes on the BGA pads, as chances are too slim the balls will just solder to the empty ones. If without one nor any paste I'd just manually tin them slightly so that the package would have the on-pad solder to connect to. Also not pre-heating the board is a very bad idea, especially with the packages this large.

    When installing, would heating it under the board work as another option?

    • @fixthetempo7276

      Maybe yes it is. But i reinstalled it with the Plumbum contained balls , so the temperature to solder it is much less . So yea, it may be an option, but you can solder it without underheat, of course with propper equipment

    NEVER use Rose's metal for clean bga. You cant full delete it from pcb, after time, starts metal degradation. If you have no way without Rose's, after Rose's use usuall 60/40(61/39) solder wire 2-3 times on pad

    I tried the same thing a few days ago. I even arranged the balls more perfect. I expected them to fall into place as your did, but no, they just locked into the place they where when I placed them. I mean, they did not auto-center on the pads. What went wrong? My bad flux?

    Great manual reball! Is there a type of flux that has a tiny amount of glue in it so the solder balls stay on better before heating? Were those lead-tin solder? Thanks, sorry it didnt fix the problem! Also, is it easier using a stencil & solder paste?

    • @fixthetempo7276
      @fixthetempo7276  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the big IC's is better to use stencil+balls. For the small IC's (mobile phones , tablets etc) better use stencil+solder paste. I use Flux plus 6-412-a. It us one of the best non active fluxes. Yes, it is some kind a very light glue. But you should use your hot air gun in light air power mode
