    You really messed up that PCB by creating cold solder joints. You should have removed the solder and redone it with flux and all. It may work now, but the vibrations will get to it again like before.

    The warranty isn't voided. Thanks to the Moss Magnusson Act, it has to be directly correlated to the issue you are having.

    • @tavarish
      @tavarish  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would've taken the car in to get this issue fixed. If this fails after my repair, I won't be able to do that because the dealer won't touch it. That's what I mean by voided warranty. Other components may not be affected necessarily.

      Beat me too it! Many companies will claim "opening will void warranty" but unless they can prove your tampering caused the problem your in the clear.

      If you knew Doug you'd know he couldn't turn a wrench. Now onto your other statement, it was something that can be fixed within an hour rather than bringing your car to a dealership for hours to have them fix it, only to go through the process of making the insurance pay for it.

    Some constructive criticism here, and suggestions for others experiencing this problem. Chances are very good that just cleaning up the connections in the plugs and the relay - without unsoldering and resoldering any of the connections on the PC board - which actually induces stress into the thin traces on the PC board, would have solved the problem of intermittent contact. In other words, one should clean up the contacts, reconnect everything, and test it before going to the extreme of attacking it with a soldering iron. And not replacing the relay cover with a new one that will properly and fully enclose the relay contacts from dust is asking for future problems .

    I like that. That was a ballsy move. I did the same thing a few years ago when I had 1999 s500 and the pump under the back seat and the pump in the trunk that control the locks, windows, and auto latching doors died. I tried doing the same thing as you just did except I ended up fucking them both up lol. I end up finding a company in Arizona that refurbished them for $300 a piece. Either way I still saved money compared to the $2500 the dealer was trying to get me for.

  • @compactc9
    @compactc9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For future circuit board cleaning, I recommend getting electrical contact cleaner, it doesn't harm the plastic. Also, some of those solder joints on the connector look pretty bad before you re-soldered them.

  • @skuzzyj
    @skuzzyj 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had to do the exact same thing to my RX8 about 6 months after I bought it. The AC temp control knob is known to fail at the solder points so you have to disassemble the radio, faceplate, HVAC controls, glob a teeny tiny amount of solder on the 3 points, reassemble, and be glad you bought $9 worth of tools/materials and didn't spend $620 on a new part.
    Hooray, being cheap and shit.
    The repair still works 5 years later. Precise robot soldering in mass manufactured electrical parts doesn't seem to handle the stress of automotive installations very well, as now I need to totally disassemble the interior so I can repair the Bose amp that powers the door woofers. The Bose amp that is IN. THE. DOOR. Good idea, that.

    • @RATTRAP
      @RATTRAP 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SkuzzyJ I know the pain of that. I did that a while back on my 03' Jeep Liberty Limited Edition that had the factory premium audio package. Some more on decided it would be a good idea to make a metal structure to house the amps in on the back of the speaker. This makes it to where you have to cut the housing open just to get to the amp. I ended up going full aftermarket after accidentally cutting into the first amp while attempting to cut the housing open. Best of luck to you!

    It might also be the contacts in the relay. You would have been better to use a solder remover and re-do the joints. There were also active electronic components as well as resistors which could have been damaged if you took too long to re-solder the joint so it was a good call not to touch those.

    If you're really concerned with audio quality, get an auxiliary jack instead of Bluetooth. A wire hanging around in the interior would probably dull some of the glamour though. If you want to go whole hog, I'd find a way to integrate a flash drive into the infotainment system. I don't know if you can get head units for an Aston, but that's the route I'd go. Bluetooth audio is pretty crappy.

      Andre McGee you are rather misinformed if you believe that the output from the jack socket is clearer then of Bluetooth (analog vs digital)

    • @McNasty43
      @McNasty43 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Satveer Degun if you know anything at all about audio, analog is almost ALWAYS better than digital. Bluetooth cannot transmit anything CLOSE to the quality of an analog jack. Bluetooth is for convenience, not quality. A wireless signal can't transfer as much data as a comparable wired connection. That's just a fact. WiFi is not faster than Ethernet.

  • @Iocalhost
    @Iocalhost 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Doing this kind of a minor mods/fixes won't void the entire warranty. He most likely voided the warranty on that part, at worst on the whole audio system. But this fix should not affect the warranty on any other unrelated system (e.g: engine, transmission, etc..).

      Johnathan Waters There is no legal way an automotive manufacturer can void a vehicle warranty.
      The most they can do is refuse to cover a repair for free under the warranty because it relates to something you did.
      He still has his warranty, but if he takes it in for a fried wiring causing the car not to start, they won't cover it because he messed with the wiring.
      If he takes it in for a prematurely worn suspension component, they'll cover it.

    That's not how warranties work. They cannot legally be voided by a manufacturer.

    • @milosilic23
      @milosilic23 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      clutchthepearls they can. You have to take the car to the dealer to be fixed. If you dont bring the car in shen predicted, you can loose a warranty. If you put a chip in, you csn loose a warranty, etc

    • @clutchthepearls3062
      @clutchthepearls3062 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      milosilic23 No you can't. Vehicle warranties can't be voided. If you "chip" your car (actually called tuning) they can deny to cover any repairs under the warranty *IF* the damage was done by the tune. You still have the warranty.

    • @MedicSound
      @MedicSound 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually called chipping, because in the case of some vehicles you can retune them by installing a literal chip or circuit box, either to the ECU directly (ex. Hondata) or between the ECU and the engine sensors (telemetry interference tuning, see KD-Box for Benz turbodiesels as an example. It reports one thing to the ECU but something entirely different to the variable geometry turbo, fuel injectors, fuel pump, etc.) That said, in many cases an entire warranty can in fact be voided for misuse of the vehicle, which would include things like racing/competing in it even if completely stock, or making far-reaching performance enhancements.

    • @clutchthepearls3062
      @clutchthepearls3062 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MedicSound This isn't the 80s anymore, bud. It's tuning now. It used to be chipping when you had to do that because the ECUs were extremely basic. Now you tune the ECUs.

    • @MedicSound
      @MedicSound 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swing and a miss mate. ECUs that were chipped directly were not done so because they were basic, but because they were proprietary and it was easier at the time to add additional hardware to make the ECU do your bidding than it was at to reverse engineer the ECU to remap it directly (think Playstation/Playstation 2 modchips, it's literally the same deal.) It's definitely more commonplace these days to remap an ECU directly, largely because the gap between commercial and hobbyist electronics has decreased immensely in the last 20 years making reverse engineering much simpler, but plug and play tuning solutions for modern cars very much so still exist. The KD-Box solution mentioned before is a component for Benz turbodiesels built '03 to present, and it isn't the only one. Brabus even sells a tune box if I'm not mistaken. They are still popular precisely because you don't have to remap the ECU directly, returning to stock is as simple as disconnecting it from the ECU.

    +APIDA Online Hey Freddy! Here's what you need to get bluetooth in your car:
    PAC AAI-ALPA - converts Alpine's AI-NET cable into RCA Link: www.amazon.com/PAC-AAI-ALPA-Auxiliary-Audio-Input/dp/B0014KQJ1E
    JL Audio MBT-RX - bluetooth receiver that ouputs to RCA Link: www.crutchfield.com/S-8RNZWdh67jG/p_13691126/JL-Audio-MBT-RX.html
    That's only one solution. I personally use this bluetooth module: www.bestbuy.com/site/rocketfish-bluetooth-music-receiver-black/9976103.p?skuId=9976103
    It uses the AptX codec, which is better sounding bluetooth decoding. It also uses a micro USB for power, hooking it up is no harder than the JL Audio piece.
    Good luck!

    If you have some basic electronics knowlegde i would reccomend TPAI (The Post Apocalyptic Inventor) channel here on youtube. He has several videos/tutorials on doing bluetooth conversion to different old stereo systems and car radios..
    No idea how much of it applies to the unit you have but maybe it helps..

    Dude you've made a classic newbie mistake you've used a heat glue gun have you worked it out yet...?? The Bluetooth sender you attempted to fix gets hot when in operation as most electrical items do have you worked it out yet ..? The glue that you've used melts when hot

    A friend owned a V8 Vantage and Aston Martin asked 1500 euros for connecting a mini jack.. Can't imagine for a bluetooth system.

    the ipod adapter can be converted easily, but if you can find a bluetooth adapter that uses the same bus connection, that should work. either that or add a simple aux adapter and bluetooth receiver.

    I love the car and i love the idea of doing it yourself but i would have added every possible thing to the warranty list

    Well, it is probably the first Aston Martin still in warranty that has hot glue on it.
