    These beginner friendly videos are great but I would like to see an 'Advanced Class', showing more difficult situations (maybe even analysing submitted match videos?) i.e. when to stop board controlling when you know your opponent has you 'on a clock' etc but I suppose those rely too much on situational decision making and can't ever really be taught as fundamentals due to how much information you need to process to reach the most correct conclusion. It would be nice to be proven wrong about that, though.

      i aggree. me being a player since beta i know how to play the game and i have a fair amount of cards. there are just some tricky situations that people like trump could get out of but i dont know how. also i make a lot of missplays while playing.

    • @kanped
      @kanped 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's more about whether there's ever a 'right move' in situations like that. Like, I'm playing Priest I've 12 health left, Mage opponent has 2 cards left. Only the opponent's Loot Hoarder is on board. With my 10 mana, I Cabal his Loot Hoarder and play an Injured Blade master and Circle of Healing. Now, say the Mage hasn't played any fireballs: he might have lethal in his hand but should I really heal for 2 rather than develop the board? But most importantly, would it be possible to make a video that could really teach you a 'right move' in situations like that, with every little piece of information required accounted for and if so, would it be too specific to relate to other problems that you might face in other games? I think it's an interesting question.

      While I like the idea of an "advanced class" I feel like he already does that with his road to legend videos. What better teaching medium than watching the teacher himself learn the best plays in the current meta. You get to see his deck choice process, his predictions to what cards are held, and when and how to make those tough game deciding calls that so often come up in these games where everything rides on a single mistake

    I once had a draft where I got 7 fireballs. I usually board controlled with them, but against this one Hunter I shamelessly fire balled him 5 times in a row.
    Was a good day.

      That's why people hate mages. Also why people love arena. I'm glad you picked all those fireballs; have a cookie.

    I agree with Chris Wilson. I learned mostly how to play by watching you, Amaz, Kolento, and Kripp, but when I found these I showed them to my friends who are new to HS and these videos have helped them a lot. It would be really cool if you wouldn't mind doing some advanced player guides for people who want to take the game even farther.

    2:55 Wondering why you didn't explain why you played your Raptor, instead of pinging the 0/1 (like some might be tempted to do)? It has a lot to do with the topic, "board control", but you didn't really mention why having another minion out, is more important than clearing the 0/1.
    Might seem like a basic tip, but I assumed that's what this series was for. Either way, this is a great idea, for newer or more experienced players. Appreciate your work, Trumpo!

    • @aozora7
      @aozora7 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think this would be addressed in his next video, as it's called "mana efficiency"

    • @carrots1990
      @carrots1990 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dissentient Actually both moves are mana efficient. But it depends on the situation whether to clear it or not. If the opponent is playing a zoo deck he might have an abusive sergeant to force a trade with your acidic swamp ooze.

    • @aozora7
      @aozora7 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Tan
      Using your hero power is not mana efficient.

    • @XBLonTwitch
      @XBLonTwitch 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dissentient I think you're confused on what "mana efficient" means. Either play is mana efficient, since it is using all of the mana he has. The issue is, playing the raptor gives him more, "board control", which is why I was confused that he didn't explain any of this.
      I feel many newer players might have pinged there just to remove the 0/1,

    • @XBLonTwitch
      @XBLonTwitch 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** ....
      Board control would include placing more minions out to thus, "control the board", with them. He mentioned that in the video further after, which is great. But he didn't really include anything on that specific play, which I feel newer and even more experienced players struggle to decide what to do in.
      Pinging a minion does not give you more board control over actually playing another minion to work with on the board.
      This is what I was trying to get at, what you've said isn't true at all. Pinging = less board control. And sure you could say playing more minions = tempo, but the video is called, "Board Control" and I just figured that move deserved a more in depth explanation.

    I just want to thank you so much. Yesterday was my second day playing ranked, I played about 15 games, lost 12, and two people quit before I was clearly winning. I was so tilted I typed "I fucking suck at heathstone" into google, and got lead to "Trump" through reddit. You helped me so much, controlling their cards is so key. I reset my deck to be like the default mage, threw in some of my favorites, and won 5 out 6 games, and won some really hard. Thanks much again, I was about to quit this game out of rage. This video alone genuinely changed my skill signifacntly. (I got so many "well played" and "amazing" today, I didn't even know people could say that haha).

    Love the series concept. I consider myself pretty decent, having ranked highly in constructed (before giving it up almost entirely because I can't be assed with grinding the final few ranks) and getting my fair share of 12-x wins in arena, but even so, I consider Trump a very good value-oriented player, and it's always nice to hear him clearly state his thoughts on certain lines and board states.
    Was also interesting to see just how much damage a mistake can ultimately cause. I mean, you know mistakes can be backbreaking, and Trump almost certainly would have won even without the mistake, but to actually see it cause 10 damage was amazing.

    an important thing to note (though im a new player too) is that because you had board control, that huge minion he played at the very end (assuming you didnt have leathal) could have easily been taken out by cards whose value you had already gotten return on in triplicate, or by clearing spells that might cost some mana, but that your board presence gives you the freedom to play

      tempo is a thing warlock is really good at, and druid, cards like soulfire and doomguard and innervate, giving up cards to gain more power quickly

    • @Madhattersinjeans
      @Madhattersinjeans 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Tempo is mostly to do with taking board control back at all costs, regardless of any inefficient trades playing the cards might make.
      For instance a Leper Gnome on turn 1 vs a mage would be considered a tempo play because the mage can easily kill that card at the expense of not developing their own board presence.
      If the mage does spend their turn 2 fireblasting the leper gnome, they give up the "initiative" in exchange for card advantage.
      Having the initiative means you dictate the board, you command the next minion to send into the fight and your opponent is forced to either have a good answer or risk losing tempo.
      Having stronger board presence enables you to take the initiative in future for things like better minion trading.
      Thus you have the tempo advantage.
      Doomguard is another good example, (apart from the dream scenario of playing the doomguard with no cards in hand) you're usually sacrificing card advantage for board control.
      A 5/7 with charge on turn 5 is really really strong but the card loss means it's usually not going to gain you card advantage in the short term but it will set up a good position to continue the offensive.
      The idea is that having the strong board presence will make up for the short term card disadvantage by either setting up better trades in future or killing your opponent quicker.
      Naturally you'd want to get card and tempo advantage at the same time but in Hearthstone there's often branching decision trees on whether you want to play for card advantage or tempo, rarely both.
      A lot of which you should play for comes down to individual plays and how your deck is constructed and what your deck wants to do in order to win.

    • @FoldAPieceOfWater
      @FoldAPieceOfWater 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good explanations, and I know roughly what it is, but specifically in Arena there are often choices like playing Gnomish Adventurer or Yeti turn 4 on an empty board. Trump would usually play the Adventurer, though due to it's stats it's significant lower in tempo expended for a possible card advantage. That play for example falls weak to an opponents yeti or tiger, dependent on the turn, as well as many removals, which easily flip the tempo and initiative.
      Or just situations when having the option of playing one higher mana or more lower mana cards.
      That's where my game seems too fall apart and I think Trump could've done a superior play, yet obviously he's the one who wins more often...

      FoldAPieceOfWater That specific decision would be made based on his draft and what he thinks of his opponent's draft. If you have a very strong late game draft and you feel your opponent's deck will have a weaker late game, it is beneficial to draw cards and play your weaker minions to try and bait out some of your opponents answers first.

    CANNOT thank you enough. I started playing about a month ago and hadn't won a single game. Watched this video and went from 50 to 33 in one night, only lost 1 game out of what, 20? Hahaha thank you!!

    I'm a mage player, and this helped me have a better strategy, and control over my games. I still lose a few from bad hands, to being over powered, but i win a lot more now! and even reached a rank I haven't yet reached before! Thanks for this vid, and look forward to the others you will be making c:

    It's fun coming back to watch these again (I was just talking about how these are the 'bare minimum' skill level for playing Hearthstone, so thought I'd refresh myself) - and wowee was that opponent bad. I honestly thing the innkeeper would've been better. I know this is rank 22 at a time when lots of players had little experience and skill - and the mistakes made for good teaching points - but wow, besides the ones that were mentioned, who would ever think that using Wild Growth on 8 mana is a good idea? Quite literally the only time it's worth it is if you're very likely going to make a 10 mana play on the turn after (ie. Wild Growth on 8 because you need to Deathwing on 10 in order to survive). Doing it on 8 for any other reason is just about burning the card; you're literally spending 2 extra mana to get an Innervate on your next turn (and losing the option to cycle the card), so I hope that Innervate was damn worth it!

    Thank you so much for this video. Usually I am very very bad at collectible card games but still wanted to try out Hearthstone because it looked good. Thanks to you I am starting to get a basic understanding of the strategy and was even able to win a few matches against real opponents. Haha, makes me feel pretty good. ^___^

    • @RTukka
      @RTukka 8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      +ZhirniToni That's why Flamestrike is in the deck. There are other board-clearing spells and effects, as well as various forms of hard removal to deal with tough minions. Basically, you just try to continue making efficient trades and eventually you might catch up or overtake your opponent. If you don't have a good answer in-hand, you might try to draw into it using whatever card draw effects you have available.
      The more advanced side to board control is knowing what plays your opponent likely has available to him, which comes with knowledge of the classes, cards, and meta-game -- what cards/decks are popular... in addition to paying attention to what cards your opponent has played, how many cards he has in his hand, and how long he has held specific cards (which can let you get a read on what the cards might be). Knowing what plays your opponent likely has available lets you deny him more efficient trades, and play cards that will give you maximum value.

      I'm a noob but I figured that a good thing to do is to atleast learn the most common trap cards and best class specific spells since it's much easier than trying to learn every card in the game.
      An easy example is to always anticipate Freeze/Fire trap in Hunter, That minion block trap in paladin, the Counter Spell, Mirror entity in mage or Iceblock in Freeze mage. Aswell as common spells like Polymorph, Animal Companion, Rock Biter Weapon etc. etc.

    I downloaded Hearthstone for the first time today and played the mage. Learning the game I got up to about level 17 or maybe 18 when I ran into a Paladin or maybe a Priest with the screen-name, 'Trump' who then mopped the floor with me. Maybe it was you. Maybe a copy-cat. June 21st 2016.

      Geahk Burchill nah, not quite possible. It figures, the game algorithm matches new players with the new ones and old players with the old ones. So yeah, unless you are in ranked you were playing against a skilled copycat.
