Great review. I just ordered the Tamron lens and will almost certainly be selling my Sony 70-200mm f4 G. Overall the Tamron looks to be a great package with a really cute set of compromises that probably makes it the best overall lens in this trio for most photographers most of the time. If you are a paid sports pro, working regularly and need bullet proof reliability, don't have to carry it all day walking about etc then the better build quality from the GM 'beast', despite the cost is the better option. For just about all others the Tamron is the new smart choice. I still don't think it will retain it's percentage value as well as the Sony optics, but my lenses are for use, shooting and a means to an end. If they get a little battered by use and life then so what - they are a tool and by all accounts a lot better than they have any right to be.
I think Tamron may be coming pretty soon with a G2 of this lens since we got a 28-75 g2 already, so I will continuous using my 85 or the cheapo 28-200 if I need them. I did pre order the g2 28-75.
hey someone called Craig emailed me and asked me some questions about this lens. I wrote a reply but the email got bounce back.. so can you please either contact me here or via my other social media contacts so i can get back to you Thanks!
nice nice nice, the video I have been waiting for! Here in China, Tamron 70-180mm with two Tamron filters are sold at 1100USD including a tax of 13%, much affordable than the price in many other countries🤪
I had the Sony f4. Replaced it with the tamron. Took my dog out for a run with him running at me I only got 50% in focus. Used to get at least 90% with the f4. Took it back it’s a disappointment for me
Nice video! Did you understand what was behind that strange f8 behavior where it looked unsharp but weren´t? And also did I understand correctly that it is in the EVF/LCD it look unsharp but is ok on computer?
Not sure about Tamron, but lots of factories are closed right now, and shipping also big problem. So it may take a while to find one on shelf unfortunately
Your review really was helpful. I'm getting my Tamron today. I also will like the Tamron because of the ability to get some macro shots at 70mm when manually focusing. Not too mention, I hate big white lenses because it always draws attention to yourself and often I like to be in the background where I'm not a distraction.
ha! good question. Watching my review again and i was puzzled too. But then i checked some of the product photos I took and it's actually orange. I think the video footage just happens the way how i light up the lenses make it appear black, but it's not
Hi Richard, thank you again for your fantastic review, just one quick, I know its not in the video but did u test the sel70200g vs tamron 70-180mm at f8 and above? If yes, is there a noticeable difference in sharpness? The reason I ask is I mainly do landscape photography and you can get a f4 second hand for around $1200-1300 AUD where the Tamron is $2300-2500 AUD. So just wondering if they equal out with sharpness at f8 and above? Thank you
Hi David, I only tested it to around f/8 but not beyond as diffraction really starting to make the image soft once I stop down to f/11 or beyond. But at f/8, the difference between these lenses are quite small. If you could pick up a nice copy of the f/4 at half the price, i think it's a good option to go for!
@@TheRealRichardWong thank you so much Richard. I have the 135 f18 for portrait but was looking for the cheapest zoom option for landscapes. You have aided me greatly in my decision. Fantastic review and thanks for the fast response, you now have a new subscriber to your channel. Cheers David
If you're using it for landscape you have to factor in that the Tamron doesn't have a tripod collar and won't be balanced very well and if you shoot at 180mm at a slow shutter speed you risk motion blur. I have the 70-300 and because it doesn't have a tripod collar l get a lot of shots that are unusable especially compared to when I had a Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 that is better balanced because of the tripod collar.
Hello Richard, I just got my Tamron 70-180 as well. However, I've noticed the lens makes a slight whirring noise when the camera is on, even when on manual focus. Also when the camera is off, the lens makes a slight knocking noise when I flip it forwards/backwards. Have you noticed any of these noises?
I don't notice any whirring noise, especially in MF mode. Is it quite noticeable or very very quiet? Also i would say no about the knocking noise. Does anyone have the lens hear the same noise? Would be good to check it and let neil454 know
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the reply. It's not very loud but if I listen closely I hear it quite easily. It doesn't bother me, but if it's not normal I'll probably have Tamron repair/replace it.
Hi, I have a 28-75mm Tamron for my sony a7iii and yes I've noticed these noises, I can only hear them when it's super quiet and only rarely, the whirring noises go away when I shoot in continuous focus mode, as for the knocking noises, only when their moved very fast or vigorously
HI, I just wanted to point out that at 3:36 (th-cam.com/video/DVL_R_hHL00/w-d-xo.html) you have written the names of the models in front of the lenses, but it seems like you mistakenly put Sony f/4 in front of the f2.8 and vice versa. I noticed this from the fact that I thought the f/4 is smaller as well as the fact that the lens body says otherwise. Please confirm, just trying to ensure I am making the right decision with the Sony f/4 and if its bigger than the Sony f2.8, its a deal breaker for me.
It seems to be parfocal but I haven't test too much to confirm. From memory Focus breathing on wide end was minimal.. can't remember the tele end sorry
Don't worry about lack of Tripod collar. There is 100% certainty we will see Tripoc collar accessories from various gadget makers. Tamron themselves were certain this lens will be more popular than the 28-75 which already is the world's most sold lens in 2019. So Tripod collars from 3rd party will be inevitable.
They both pretty good choice. Tamron allows you to dissolve the background more and better for low light. Sony would be better for stabilisation for sure
amazing review...very detailed and with a lot of information...straight to the point. Your one comparison cleared all my queries. Thanks a lot for the comparison. I just have a small doubt....Does a speed booster decrease the depth of field for more bokeh as well or does it just increases light input? Thank you SUBBED!
Thanks speedboster does let more light in (actually more like focus all the light into a smaller area) and effectively increased the maximum aperture and hence more shallow dof
Very hard to compare sharpness on picture like that as the focus can pick different area. You should do it on flat surface to have accurate sharpness. Overall I like your review :)
Thank you for your very thorough review. This is the one that I have been waiting for! Although I own the other two Tamron zooms I am not planning on picking this one up anytime soon as I already own the Sony 70-200 F4 and it seems, that outside of the gain of one stop of light ( f2.8 vs.f4), there isn't enough image quality gained to justify its purchase. I think you did a great job in comparing all three lenses and answered a lot of our questions. However, I would have definitely picked the Tamron if I had been starting from scratch!
Thanks for watching. I agree i don't think you should sell the Sony f/4 to buy the tamron but I personally would definitely pick the Tamron if I am buying one between the two
@@TheRealRichardWong as a video shooter where image stabilization is important for handheld work, would you recommend the sony F4 version over the Tamron? Or did you find the difference in camera shake not to be an issue?

Hi, beautiful review. Tamron 70-180 works good for sports? Especially for ice skating figure where the lights are so poor? What do you think about it?
Hi there I haven't try that myself but I would guess it would be similar to other 2.8 lens ? The autofocus seems not bad.
Hi Richard if u have no budget problem which lens do u prefer
If I don't have to pay for it, I would go for the Sony 2.8. but if I have to pay using my own money, then it would be the Tamron
