I owned both the Sony 70-200 f4 and the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 and ended up selling the Sony. I found the hit rate on moving subjects much better on the Tamron versus the Sony. In addition, for event photography (which is usually indoors with poor lighting and often moving subjects) the faster aperture allowed me to have half the ISO of the Sony for cleaner images. The Tamron seemed to have better edge-to-edge sharpness and in manual mode, could get 1:2 magnification (@70mmm) which makes it a nice macro-ish lens. The only time I saw the Sony outperform the Tamron was hand-held photography with non-moving subjects where I was able to use slower shutter speeds. But the Tamron was getting 1-1.3 stops more light (noticed you only got 2/3 stops) so the ISO was almost always the same, not to mention the Tamron takes up less room in my bag, is lighter to carry, and feels more balanced on the camera. The lens is lighter than the Sony 24-70 GM (886g) which also doesn’t feature a lens mount. Given the Tamron is not very front heavy, I don’t think a lens mount is necessary at all. So far, I haven’t seen any dust or moisture intrusion in the Tamron lens with the extending barrel. Overall, the Tamron is smaller, lighter, brighter, sharper, cheaper, faster auto-focusing and closer focus distance. I feel those qualities trump better build quality, more buttons and OSS.

@@dunnadidit I also shoot with the older A7rii, which doesn’t have the best autofocus. It may just be that it did better with the faster VXD motors vs Sony’s offering, perhaps it doesn’t matter as much for the newer models. The transmission difference is interesting. In one set of photographs comparing the two lenses I was shooting ISO 400/500 with the Sony and got ISO 200 with the Tamron, same shutter speed and exposure. I noticed that improvement consistently.

I got the Sony 70-200 F4 about 2 years ago and have never regretted it. I would recommend it over the Tamron for the same reasons you mentioned. It would take a lot for me to trade it in
I wish Sigma would make a 70-200
They were about to release it in Spring 2020 but it got delayed because of Covid ... there hasn't been an update ever since unfortunately

I own both. Since I picked up the Tamron, more than a year ago, The Sony has been left at home except for a multi-camera shoot. I'll probably sell it. Smaller size and F2.8 do it for me.
That easier to pack life is a real thing.

@@TheCaffeinatedDrive I ended up renting the 70-200 gm2 for my shoot back then. I got to say though, the extra 20mm from 180 isn’t a dealbreaker because you can definitely crop in the last 20mm without losing quality.

My pick is the Sony. Although the Tamron has a closer focusing distance and a wider aperture, those factors are somewhat insignificant to me at those focal lengths. The biggest thing for me was the smoother zoom of the Sony and its image stabilization.
That’s exactly it! Typically, close focus and f2.8 are more important to me, but out at the long focal lengths it’s definitely less so.
The Tamron trilogy is amazing for the price. Low light performance is good and I don't really find that I need image stabilization. For the price they can't be beat.
I own the Tamron 70-180 & the 28-75. They are a great choice for people who can't afford the G-Master, but want a quality lens that has optics on par or superior to the Sony. Enjoy your videos!

Im with canon and own the 70-200 f2.8 g2 for many years now and its still perfect. Even adapted on my cos r it works flawlessly. I like Tamrons build and weather sealing very much
Liked the video. Another aspect to consider would be the warranty. Tamron typically offers a 6 year limited warranty for their lenses which is significantly more than Sony. This adds a nuance to the build quality comparison. Though the Tamron features a durable engineered plastic construction as opposed to Sony’s metal one, it looks like Tamron feels fairly confident that it would be able to withstand a lot of use and deliver an outstanding use life.

What again! What good timing. I rented the Tamron 2 weeks ago and I rented the Sony this last weekend for wedding filmmaking. I’m looking through the footage this week to see if there are differences. Which I really don’t expect to find. The Sony is a MUCH better experience to work with. The internal focus & zooming to awesome. There were times that I felt the Tamron tracked a little better than the older Sony. The lens will mainly being used for ceremonies and speeches at that the reception (low lighting🙁). Since it will almost always be on a tripod the OS isn’t needed. Still can’t decide😩

I've been waiting for a Sigma version to come out. I haven't bought the Tamron because it doesn't have stabilization. I feel like that is pretty important when zooming. Also I also figure the F4 is fine for indoors on a FF camera, because I can just raise the ISO. On APSC however, I would get the Tamron, because I want to keep the ISO as low as possible.

For me, the better choice was the Tamron. I'm a parent and having the extra stop to raise the SS can be crucial for the kids' indoor events (dance recitals, indoor sports, etc.) When I shot with Canon DSLRs, I had the 70-200 f:4L and always wished I had sprung for the f:2.8. I'm quite pleased with the 70-180 f:2.8 with my Sony bodies. I have an a6500 and A7III, so both have IBIS and I rarely loose a shot due to the Tamron not having on board stabilization. I'm not so sure I would have as many keepers with an APS-C body without IBIS in some situations.

This is a no brainer, of course the Tamron. I own the Tamron and the 2.8 over f4 makes a huge difference. image quality specs are also impressive in the Tamron and my only complain is the lack of image stabilization.

Hey do you think the 70-200 f4 would be able to pull off hockey (or other indoor sports) on an a7c? I'm not sure I *need* 200 vs 180 here but from what I'm finding reading and watching other youtubers it seems like consensus is 2.8 is pretty much required?
Excellent video. I have bought the Sony 70-200 f4 and will always chose it for the following reasons:
1. Native lens designed for and by Sony
2. Internal focussing. It makes a big difference to me. Such a smooth experience! Also helps when using a gimbal
3. Continuous f4 in combination with the A7III iso handling. I don't really need a faster lens.
4. Customisation buttons, lovely
5. My experiences with Tamron lenses have not been great.

Tamron is for me, The 2.8 makes a big difference for me for portraits
I would go with Tamron since it is at a lower price than Sony 70-200 F4, but I am mainly a prime shooter so I do have prime in the following range 24, 40, 50, 85, 105 and 135mm, I can pretty much use it if I don't like to carry 85, 105 and 135mm. My 135mm prime does not have image stablisation but it has not been a problem for me. For me Sony 70-200 F4 might have image stalisation and Tamron does not but it is not a deal breaker, neither is the extra range it is missing. Tamron does have some macro capability at 70mm and it works well and in manual focus mode its minimum focus distance is 0.27 metres, I could increase the magnification to close to 1.7:1 with some extension tubes.
I'm not a huge fan of Tamron glass because of the focusing. I had the 17-28 28-75 and 20mm all had worse focusing than native glass and my sigma glass so I sold them and upgraded to the Sony equivalents. Great video man

I got *very* lucky and found a 70-200 GM used for about £1000 off. If not for that, though, I probably would have gone Tamron; definitely handy to have that 2.8 in very low light

I just got the Tamron last week. I was gonna pull the trigger on the Sony 70-20 f4 and they were out of stock then I found a store deal on the Tamron making it $999 Those last few dollars and stock made the decision really easy for me.
Do I wish I had a more robust construction and internal zoom sure, but I found the Tamron to have much better image quality than the Sony.

I’m pretty sure most sporting events like the US Open Tennis tournament and other stadium events don’t allow white zoom lenses as they appear professional.
very nice and good comparison! i was pretty sure that i would take the tamron bcs of the 2.8 but its really not that big difference. i like to go outside in the night and makeing some street photos and i think thats the only case were the tamron could win against the sony.
A little bit to much SONY oriented comparison. On my SONY A7RII I use both TAMRON 28-75 and 70-180. The portability of the 70-180 itself worth the price of the lens. I did not find any problem in image sharpness due to the lack of the lens stabilization ( I did not try the video mode). The autofocus and the sharpness of this lens is brilliant.
As a new Sony user 😁 this is very timely😁. The 3 lenses are the ones i'm trying to get. Have the 16-35 need the other 2. So this helps with the desicion making. I know the G Master is a lot more expensive is there a comparison between the tamaron 2.8, sony f4 and sony f2.8? Or is it minimal the difference?
I highly recommend doing a quick YT search for the Tamron GM comparison. There are tons of videos out there for that (which is partially why I did this one instead) the f4 was already one of the top rated Sony zoom lenses so it’s tough to justify double the price for the GM but I do think it’s a better lens overall.
I didn’t get to try the Sony one but I went with the Tamron for the size and F2.8. Also I didn’t really need the features on the Sony one. The Tamron was on sale + 200 cashback so it ended up costing me about 800 euros.
And I shoot the A7III on the Sony side of life so I got the IBIS at least for the lack of stabilization on the Tamron. It’s stable enough combo as far as I’m concerned.
I did get the Sony 24-70 GM over the Tamron 28-75 because I got a great used deal on the Sony and figured the 4mm on the wide end would be beneficial. Still paid almost double for a used 24-70 GM versus the Tamron 28-75 but hey I’m happy with my wallet empty 😄 Now I just need (want) a wide zoom but haven’t researched the topic yet. Might get by with a wide prime too (some 16 ish mm) because most cases 24mm has been wide enough for me at least (I do mostly photos atm).

I ended up picking up the Tamron 17 - 28mm and the Tamron 28 - 75mm lenses because of your lens reviews and because I later found after trying out some of the other Sony lenses, that I prioritize (light) weight and portable lenses over some of the other heavier native lens options. I would however , still like to add a native Sony lens to my kit and think the f4 with OSS would be a nice addition. I would consider a future Sigma 70 - 200 but I have a feeling it will be close to 4lbs! Keep up the awesome work!

I choosed Tamron because it is almost a macro lens, and F/ 2.8. Enough for me.
What camera do you for testing for sony 70 200 and sigma 70 180
I shoot with the Sony 70-200mm f/4 OSS lens and I use a third party tripod shoe which is black and has a built in ARCA-COMPATIBLE slot. I also use a black round, screw-in metal lens hood. This makes it a LOT easier to use a CPL because all you need to do is to screw the filter into the front threads of the lens and the hood into the filter threads. Then, just turn the hood to rotate the CPL. You don't need long Grinch-Like fingers to adjust the CPL. Additionally, the black color of the hood makes the lens less obtrusive than with the white (gray) lens hood. The third party hood protects the lens as well as the OEM hood...

Wishes: I do like the 70-200mm f/4 OS lens but, I wish that there were lighter weight constant aperture telephoto zoom designed for APSC cameras. I like using a pair of cameras for traveling and Sony APSC are my picks because of weight and size. The lighter weight lens that I imagine would be something like 50-150mm f/4 built to the specs of the Sigma 18-50mm f.2.8 lens.
Carrying a pair of cameras when traveling is a safeguard against missing out on photography because of a camera malfunction. I fell climbing a ridge in Alaska on the first day of a ten day trip and broke one of the two Canon DSLR cameras I was carrying. The second camera saved my photography for the trip. A friend on a guided our to China fell on a rough street in Xian and broke the only camera he was carrying. He was not able to shoot again until the tour reached Hong Kong where he could purchase a replacement camera.

I am a tammy fanboy, but you made some good comparisons there with the two lenses. LOL I would agree with you though......Stabilization is nice for those ultra zoom moments. My wife wanted an all in one lens that she doesn't have to change so I got her the Tamron 28-200mm.....and I have been pretty happy with that lens. I feel like I do not need a 70-200 now. For those times I need the zoom I will grab that lens and for the rest I just use my f2.8 lenses boom and done. Ok great video as always.....Look a plane!!!

The Tamron has a lot of dust in my copy after a few months. It is an amazing lens but what it will be like in a few years like even more dust? It will be unusable it two-three years

Nice video sir, i would pick the sony one but if there are other option. Somehow in my country the sony 70-200 f4 is cheaper than the tamron both used and new. The tamron is like 25-50% or more in our currency. But im just beginner still cant buy both 🤣

I have to admit, I used the f4 for a photo job and have the Tamron 28-75 (same build quality) and the Sony does ‘feel’ better. It’s such a stupid thing to consider as it’s hundreds of $$ more expensive, but it really does feel like a nice lens to use. Saying that, I would maybe go for the tamron just because low light can ruin a shot even with decent ISO, you do have to ramp up the ISO a lot more for f4 and Sony cameras prefer over exposure over shadow recover I believe?
I actually generally underexpose a little bit if I have to because Sony has such fantastic shadow recovery in post. When shooting video, though, I generally expose a bit higher to keep the information to the right.

Quick question - I shoot concert videos at very low light.. What is now better to have for doing videos at low light, the sony f4 stabilized, or the tamron f2.8..? I mean for every other thing I would always pick the sony over the tamron, but what do you think..? 🤔

Sorta different, but also consider the 70-350 on the A6600. It’s smaller in the bag than the 70-200/4, although it does extend when zooming. On the A6600, AF is quick. Depending on why you want a tele zoom, the extra reach night work for you. On the other hand, the 70-200/4 will also work uncropped with an A7/A9/A1 series body, but the 70-350 will be cropped with a loss of pixels.
70 350 from Sony is great for apsc.
I’m curious about doing wildlife photography with my a6100, but the problem I’m facing is having to choose between the Tamron at f/2.8, and something like a Sony 70-350 with increased range but at the cost of significantly less light. It seems the only way to get long range with good low light capabilities is to spend thousands on a 500 f/4.
Did you already make a choice?
@@EmotionalTrance I haven’t. But based on advice from wildlife youtubers, I think it’s best to go for longer range like 500-600mm, and then rely on software for noise reduction.
I'd probably choose the Tamron probably because I already have it. 😬 Also have the Tamron 17-70 and the Sigma 100-400 👍🏾

Cool video!, also funny, It's Tamron! for me. I come from the film days, that means no ibis in anything!, no auto focus, no low light abilities, etc. and as I age, the light weight is an asset. The ibis in my a7iv and a7iii is quite enough. Also the auto focus with Sony and Tamron combos are pretty awesome. Sony wants too much money for extra features I really don't need. Thanks, Peace!

Sony 70-200 f2.8 at the price of the tamron should do it... Jokes a part, thanks, I own a 18-105 f4 sony and when I am on the 105 i find the portraits nice with the bokeh of f4, I guess 200 f4 would even be better, I am wondering how will look my 18-105 with added the 2x.
thx for the video, but i saw the tamron has a bigger diffrence in case of the T stop, so it is double the amount brighter in comparsen to the sony.

17-70 is pretty solid! It’s a bit softer at the long end than I’d like but great value for what you’re getting
I would say go with the 17-70. It's 2.8 and when it comes to APS-C, that makes a much bigger difference than on FF. Like I said on my post, you don't really want to crank up the ISO on APSC.
I thought the Tamron was made for a cropped sensor and not a full frame? am I wrong?

I ordered the Sony but with more research and seeing/reading about the Sony's breaking in half fairly easily I cancelled my order... Hoping they come out with an updated version with better optical quality and build quality. I think the 70-200 f4 is one of Sony's oldest lenses, and from the tests I have seen the optical quality does not even really match the even older Canon EF 70-200 f4's that are ~23 years old. 🤷🏼♂️ Time for an update Sony!!
Great video as always! I have the a7iii and a6400. I want more reach for when I’m shooting weddings but also care about indoor low light performance. Still go with the f4?
It’s tough. I do notice about 2/3 of a stop of light difference, so it could be helpful. But that’s going to be dependent on your situation and how you prefer to shoot.
