  • In this video I show the install procedure that I used to install and replace the factory front door speakers in my 1995 GMC Suburban. This procedure should work on most 1995-1999 GMC and Chevrolet full-size trucks including Sierra, Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon & Suburban. Also should work with Escalade of those years. This is specific to the GMT-400 platform for the years 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.

    Yes I love the rain and I love my 96 suburban v8 with 300k miles. I just installed all new speakers, wires, head unit and EQ. A lot of work and modification but wow what a fun project and an amazing final product. Sounds great inside the immense volume of the interior.

    NOTE: There is a simpler way to wire the speakers. Crutchfield and others offer a harness adapter that will fit the plug that the stock woofer connects to, and from there you can connect the harness adapter wires to the crossover, and then run new wires from the crossover to the new speakers. The stock woofer and tweeter are wired in parallel in the door wiring harness so all you need is one of them, and the woofer plug is the handiest. No wire chasing needed. :)
    Also: for a single-DIN head unit upgrade, the Metra 99-3002 mounting kit is THE BEST. No need to fool around with trying to fit the DIN sleeve into the faceplate and bend all the tabs - it has screw-in side-clamping plates that will hold the radio in the bracket. Get the antenna adapter and the harness adapter with it, and you're set.

      So if i was going with all in one speakers do i still need do anything with tweeters? Or can i just put new pair or tweeters in or delete them?

  • @WilliamGreenlee
    @WilliamGreenlee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great video. And just a note for others, you mentioned chasing the wires back in the loom on the door, but if you look at the wiring diagram you can see the tweeter and woofer wires are identical, meaning you can plug the crossover into the tweeter connector only and run a new wire to the woofer. This may not look as clean but it will prevent having to tear up the wiring loom.

    Nice work Jimmy! I am glad how you found a place to mount the crossover. I did consider that with my 98, but ended up getting 4-Ways in the front doors, and I am still using the stock tweeter. The rear pillars (I have a K1500 Pickup) have 3-Ways. I plan on putting in some aftermarket tweeters in the doors, but that will be later.
    Everyone has their brand, and mine is Pioneer. Always used and trusted them and always have had great sound and performance. I bet it already sounds better, and adding an aftermarket unit will really wake up the sound in your truck.
    A few things I want to add:
    1: Be sure you tie back the wires where they go into the woofer and such. Often times, I have found that the extra wire will come into contact with the Window when it goes down. I like to take off the little grille at the rear of the door (3 8mm screws) and look inside while I actuate the window. I do this to make sure I am not catching any wires with the window.
    2: You are right about the age. The clips WILL break, so get some replacements.
    3. Most times, you can simply grasp the door lock/window/mirror control panel and pull up. It pops off very easily. A screwdriver helps to unplug the connections.
    4. Crutchfield is great at helping to include connectors for the stock connector, and then to the aftermarket speakers. In some cases, you may need to modify them to connect them, but it is better than cutting the harness.
    I am looking forward to more videos with the GMT400. Yes, these trucks are known by many names, but it may be best to call it by it’s model and refer to then as the GMT400 platform. Just a thought. I have done it all as well... new head unit (touchscreen unit with backup camera), speakers, amp and sub. If I can help give any tips or anything for your installs or videos, let me know. I’d be glad to help.
    Keep up the great videos Jimmy, and take special care of that truck!

    @michaelwhite984 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You're half right on the GMT400 thing. The platform dates back to 88 on the trucks, 93 on the Suburban/Tahoe/Blazer. However, 95 (94?) was the first year of your interuor, which is when GM put the front speakers in the doors with components. 88-94(?) was a different interior with front speakers in the dash (not component).

    • @PeteyG708
      @PeteyG708 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael White correct on the years. The trucks made their debut in the 400 platform in 88, but the SUVs held until about 93 like you mentioned. It was 1995 when GM redesigned the exterior and interior of the trucks, giving them the nicer looking front end (in my opinion) and the rounder dash. 1998 was the last year, when GM changed to the GMT800 platform. Some of the 2500/3500 trucks, as well as the SUVs, held the 400 platform until 2000 or so.

    A quick note about your audio inputs on your factory radio. On my radio (''99 GMC Yukon) I had both a CD player and a cassette tape player, but no input for an MP3 or other audio source. I found, however, an adapter that sticks into the tape player and has a 1/8" mini jack on a 2' cord that will plug into any source with an audio out plug, sticking out of the adapter and the tape tray. I simply place the adapter into the tape player, plug the mini jack into my MP3 player (which I attached to the dash with a bit of self adhesive velcro) and voila - I have very good sound from the MP3 to my system. The adapter cost me under $10 and the MP3 player I bought for about the same price. Now I have hundreds of songs, which I can take in, connect to my computer, and change or add to at my leisure.

    I definitely mucked up the plastic pins on my 2009 Ford Fusion, when I was replacing the window mechanism. The car had like 250K miles on it. I didn't care. I just zipped it back together with self tapping screws.

    I bought the Primus pr603cf speakers that come with a 3/4 inch tweeter instead of the 1 inch and they will fit directly in the window switch panel with no modifications or hacks with a dremel. It has the same housing that you thread the nut on the back as well.

    Hey, enjoy your videos. I have a 96 GMC SLE C1500 that I bought new in 96. It is white and has the same blue interior that you have. Some of the mods I have made on my truck. Dual exhausts, installed a double dinn 6.5 Alpine Radio, XM radio, GPS and backup camera. Also my mirrors got ugly so I put chrome mirror skins on that look great. After breaking original grill I installed a billet grill. Other than that truck is original just updated some. Regards.

    any 1988 - 2002 older style non RDS radios will work in your truck. You may have to fab some brackets to mount it up but Delco built some strong units with CD players and 5 to 7 band EQ's that sounded great. May be an easier option for you. I my self don't care for aftermarket radios.

    Chase wires? Cut tape back? What?
    They both have the same feed bro. Just cut and cap the tweeter wire, run the original woofer wire into the crossover then run new wire from the crossover to the speakers.
    Done.
    Great video, but you sure did create a lot of work for yourself! Lol!
