Something this version leans into is the second aspect of Hades, him being the god of wealth. Hades was said to own everything under the earth including all the precious metals and jewels found there so along with being King of the Dead he was respected for blessing people with their wealth. This is why the fates say all coins come from Hades and why he is portrayed as a wealthy businessman.

Hades is getting worried that she won’t come back, so he keeps her down below for longer and tries to get her back sooner. It’s like the possessive BF or GF that tries to keep you from going out with friends and then blows up your phone or begs you to come sooner than you want. Hades is both the God of the Underworld and the God of Wealth because of the precious metals and minerals that get extrated from the mines. This is actually accurate to the real life believes in Greek mythology, where Hades was also called Plouton (Giver of Wealth) to identify him in a more positive light. The romans will later carry on these characteristics in their own mythology, giving to Pluto (roman Hades) the name Dis Pater, meaning "Father of Riches". This is also the reason why in his Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri makes Pluto the guardian of the 4th Circle of Hell (Avarice and Prodigality), we have the infamous "City of Dis" (which comprises Lower Hell, so from the 5th Circle to the 9th) and Virgil uses the term "Dis" as one of Lucifer's names when him and Dante get to him.
I think the two couples probably are supposed to parallel each other, its probably why one should pay more attention to the Epics because I always saw them as page breaks, especially the first two. The third one is more important (and long) But if you are still dividing these I might stop before Wait for Me because Chant, Hey Little Songbird and Chips are Down all encompass one event.
24:11 I this line kinda makes me think about how Persephone might feel because her husband owns everything including her so i feel it brings attention to the obvious power imbalance in her relationship with Hades
I love Hadestown but MAN this musical can be a nightmare for peeps with auditory processing issues 😭😭 Hades and Persephone my beloveds I have no idea what you’re talking about ever, I just know it sounds nice
One thing that is t well conveyed in animatics versus seeing this on stage is that Persephone is usually portrayed as intoxicated/self-medicated through most of the play. She’s not a happy woman
I will say this animation leaves out a key point of the choreography for this song. As soon as Persephone finishes her first series of lines she bends down and starts doing what we (in the fandom) call the possession dance. The whole dance break is actually focused on her doing this chaotic dance. And at the end she pops up with the ‘Winter’s nigh’ and so on. It’s meant to mark her transition from the goddess of spring to the goddess of the underworld.
"I was so focused on that maybe being Hades, i was not listening to Hermes like, at all" 😂 very fair. He may be very problematic in this, but his voice is lovely 😊 youre in for a treat
I think everyone already answered your questions. When you eventually get to "Wait for Me", I think it would help you a lot with the feeling of the whole thing if you watched the performance of it from the 2019 Tony Awards. It's what made me buy the soundtrack. I still haven't gotten to see the whole show live, but it's on my wish list.
20:00 The lore: Hades is ruler of the underground, so all things that originate there are "his." This includes metal, such as that used in coins i.e. [Every little **penny** in the wishing well] [Every little **nickel** on the drum] Mythology wise, Hades is actually the richest of the Gods, because all copper, silver, gold, etc. belongs, ultimately, to him.
Your reaction to Hades’ voice made me cackle! I love his voice so much, I think he’s been in other broadway stuff, but one of my favorite things I’ve heard him in was a podcast musical called In Strange Woods
Im sure your patreons have made you aware by now but the reason persephone lingers was because hades didnt let her leave hence why she was so irrated when he showed up before her alotted 6 months to bring her back down to hadestown ,its also implied that this has been happening often hence why everyone is struggling because summer isnt long enough for them to properly gather enough food for everyone, its also implied that hadestown/hell is very rich as hades forces the souls down there to work ,while everyone top side souls included are stuck lingering at the train station to hadestown ,kinda a alternate take on the myth of the ferryman of the underworld you basically have to pay your way to hell but like hermes said those that go down dont come back.
hades doesn't force them down there. They choose to go there to escape from poverty just like eurydice. The work then beats them down. "all my children came here poor, clamoring for bed and board"
@@august1837 i think they meant "he forces the souls who are down there to work", not "he forces them to go down there in order to work" (though this discussion is technically a spoiler)
Except he actually is forcing them down by shortening/removing the most fruitful months for humans, not giving them an opportunity to stock enough resources ("just enough to fill our cups") to last through the winter months and leaving them no choice but to turn to him. It's not his intention but he is directly responsible for it regardless.
So excited that you're listening through Hadestown! If you ever wanted to listen to the Off-Broadway cast to compare, I highly recommend Miranda Pla's animatics for "Way Down Hadestown" and "Wait for Me"! There's something about the deeper grit in Damon Daunno's rendition of "Wait for Me" that's really special, especially when contrasted with Reeve Carney's more ethereal falsetto. Also, you may already know this, but Gigi has done a great animatic for "Flowers"! Edit: spelling, clarity
If you're so invested in Hades' voice, he's on a musical podcast called 'In Strange Woods' that I recommend cause I absolutely LOVE the songs. it does have a bunch of dialogue and idk if that's viable for videos, but it is Very good.
I don't know how far ahead you are in Hadestown as this point (I also have no idea when the songs take place), but I have a suggested animatic for you to watch (whether it's for TH-cam, Patreon, or just watching it later by yourself). It's an animatic for "Wait for Me (reprise)" & "Doubt Comes In" (both songs are part of one animatic). The animatic is by Rambu and it's super well made. It's technically an OC animatic but it's basically a musical of Hadestown done by the characters, so they're dressed as the characters in the song, and the same story is happening if that makes any sense. There's also one bit at the end that is more going into the OC story (Rambu's made several animatics for her characters with a comic for the story). Rambu's also made an animatic (again with her characters as the characters from the musical) from Hamilton for the song "Yorktown" if you want to do a reaction to that or just watch it on your own.
I am literally so excited!!! I can't wait for so many songs, but If It's True has to be my favorite! The thing about this musical that I love so much is that it is the literal epitome of "it's the journey that matters, not the end", because most of us go into it knowing (and if they don't know, then Hermes tells us in the first song) that it's a tragedy, and yet by the end, even through your tears, you know it's been an incredible, beautiful, and bittersweet story. I never come out of listening to this musical without crying, no matter how many times I listen to it. It's the story of two love stories who slowly switch places over the course of the musical. It's beautiful and sad, and beautiful BECAUSE it is sad. Also the cast is PHENOMENAL. I knew Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) from Miss Saigon and knew Amber Gray (Persephone) from Great Comet, and I love them even more here, which I didn't think was possible! Also, Patrick Page (Hades) from Hunchback... and the list goes on!
You got confused because people forget that Hades’ domain is also everything found underground (gold, silver, copper, stones), not just god of the dead
Hades is the god of wealth. So this show adds to the 20's jazz theme by having Hadestown be a 1920's style gold rush city. Also because Hades is the king of the underworld, the underground concept adds to the fact it's for mining.
22:54 - Mortius's reaction to the voice of Mr. Hades 😲😳😍 lol But seriously, Patrick Page is an icon and I was interested to see how you'd react to his rich baritone voice 🙂❤
Thank God you’re reacting to the show because it’s one of my brothers absolute favorites and we never disagree on musicals but it just hasn’t given me the Pam Pam yet. Already you’re providing insights on the lyrics and other things that I missed.
I love how you have the same reaction to that man's rumble that I did. Like oh no. Sir. You can't just sound like that and expect us not to fall in love with you.
It's been super fun following along with you through Hadestown first time hearing like 98% of it only new motifs and general character voices and appearances before it's also been very funny as I know the entire story of both Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone basically by memory from Greek myth and general different interpretations from other media and seeing Mortius go WAT HOW Who are we, Where are we?! Is just a Joy 😊
19:39 Hades was also called 'Pluton' (probs not spelling right) in some classical Greek stuff, likely due to the idea that saying a god's name brought their attention on you, which you wouldnt really want from the Big Boss of The Dead Place, which over time got conflaited with a minor god of wealth, Plutous (again, spelling probs aint correct) which then fed into later Roman synchronisation into their death god, Pluto, which I think then got back into Greek into Hades as King Of All Below The Ground, or that happened back with Pluton and Plutous thing. This is coming from my memory so please take with a grain of salt.
My favourite bit of Way Down Hadestown is that, before he arrives on the scene, we have Hermes singing about how he's a mean old boss, a real bastard who exploits his workers. Then he steps onto the scene, and the his presence shifts the perception of him, and now the fates are singing that he's a mighty king
I can’t blame you for getting a bit lost about the setting and lore of hadestown, this musical really loves using metaphors and flowery language especially when depicting the more mythological aspects of the story.
I think someone already told you this, but I'll still comment for engagement: This show uses a version of Hades much more similar to Pluto (the roman version), so he's not only the god of dead, but also the god of riches That's why every coin comes from hadestown As you'll get more into songs, I think you notice a large critique of capitalism (sorry wrote this almost asleep)
Heyy, I'm so glad you're reacting to Hadestown! Its one of my favorite musicals ever Btw, could you react to a stage-recorded video of the song Epic III + They danced? It doesn't have any full animatics, and the visuals add so soo much Especially "they danced" which is just music
Dear Mortius, I know you're not one to do several views of the same song, but I highly HIGHLY recommend the animatics by Miranda Pla, who did an animatic of "Way down Hadestown" and "Wait for me", before Hadestown got to Broadway. Miranda Pla's animated work is super gorgeous, and in that version of Way Down, Patrick Page has a few more lines (being the one to say "all aboard" instead of Hermes, and... I swear, my knees melted under me first I heard that, because he said in such a husky voice that was just... ooooooogh so good)
All I've Ever Known is really such a beautiful song ❤ hits deep... And oh noo xD Past Mortius missing the true meaning of "6 months": 😢 Past Mortius opening the lyrics: 👀👀👀👀 (hope rising he notices the beginning of the song he read wrong) Past Mortius NOT seeing that part and only focussing on the lyrics at hand: 😔 Welp. At least he found out at some point after the recording xD I'm not even on Patreon myself, but I hope you'll treat them by watching one of the other animatics for Way Down Hadestown.... 🙏👀 There's one one in particular by Miranda Pla which is my favourite.....sooooo beautiful ❤️ and it has an alternative recording with a slightly different cast of the musical. Some of the lines are also given to other characters... it's just a really cool version of the song and a whole new experience! I can only recommend it.
19:03 okay, I'm just yelling "SHE'S NOT ALLOWED TO STAY LONGEEEEER" to the screen by this point Love the way you speak like she can go wherever she wants whenever she desires, but unfortunately that's not the case (for a lot of us) 🥲 It ends up being more of a "she has to head back home sooner than expected and because of that she seems to take longer to come back up" than a "she keeps lingering down there"
so this is also my first time watching HADESTOWN through your reactions, but i got a theorie about the lore. Its only based on the videos/songs we've seen so far tho. I think that the Station, where the people are currently resting, isnt a place that actually exists in the univers but is a metaphor for a place where peoples soul are waiting for the final death. Like u said, in greek, the dead are getting coins layed on their eyes (or under the tougne) to pay Charon the Ferryman. Since the songs are always hinting the fact that their all poor and lonely, i assume that the people in that Station are souls that dont have the coins to get to the Underworld yet. The Fact that Hermes is "chilling" with them is supporting my theorie since he is the God that collects souls and brings them to the Underworld. The Fates are also there which could mean that from there on its over and only "Fate" decides their final end. This theory would mean tho, that orpheus, since he is with Hermes just simply lives there while eurydike is actually already dead, to poor to take the train and stuck in that station - which would make that story even more tragic. The Lyric in "Way down" also mentions that they work hard and the wage is nothing - so they might Work to get the coins... Im from germany and i struggel sometimes wording theories like this so sorry if i made mistakes or its hard to understand
I know he is just following a playlist but damn do I wish he was listening to the original cast recording, at least for a few songs like this one. It also has a few animatics that I think better show the story and (most importantly) actually have subtitles on them.
It was so funny never seen hadestown know snippets and most character voices but I was like what does Hades sound like again? Then he opened his mouth and I also went oh no his voice is hot, Hades unless take me out to dinner before just bust out the raspy voice 😂.

Yeah, Hades isn't the bad guy here because he is the god of the dead. He's the bad guy because he's the god of Capitalism.

Two of my favorite Hadestown songs from my favorite reactor on my birthday?? Best present I've ever gotten!!
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday!
Many Happy Returns!
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday 🎂 🥳.
Cant wait for certain other songs that really make Hades’ voice shine because oh man is he good
Ughhh chant and hey little songbird and why we build the wall
Every time that man opens his mouth I get literal chills
@@sarahhandberg5185Omg yessssssss he's so magnetic!!!
I love "Why we build the wall". It's brilliant, a very precise commentary, and it has Hades' voice on full glory
For me, the music and the voices are SO good that I can’t understand anything ‘cause I simply cannot pay enough attention 😭😭😭
Awe their love is so wholesome.
......
...
Oh.
Gods Dammit
Your reaction to Hade's voice for the first time is a UNIVERSAL experience, BLESS you.
7:03 is just me throughout this entire musical lmao the writing is too good!!!
One thing that is t well conveyed in animatics versus seeing this on stage is that Persephone is usually portrayed as intoxicated/self-medicated through most of the play. She’s not a happy woman
She stayed down for longer because he didn’t let her go. Not because she wanted to.
I like how Hades comes in and takes off his sunglasses like 'im here to steal yer girl' :D
20:00 The lore:
Hades is ruler of the underground, so all things that originate there are "his." This includes metal, such as that used in coins i.e. [Every little **penny** in the wishing well] [Every little **nickel** on the drum]
Mythology wise, Hades is actually the richest of the Gods, because all copper, silver, gold, etc. belongs, ultimately, to him.
By the way that "oh nnnnnoo..." was very, _very_ relatable I think we've all thought it hgfjdk
Your reaction to Hades’ voice made me cackle! I love his voice so much, I think he’s been in other broadway stuff, but one of my favorite things I’ve heard him in was a podcast musical called In Strange Woods
22:55 yeppp don't worry mortius, my boyfriend and i went through the same thing xD his voice is prettttty
Mortius, I thought you and casper learned your lesson the last time you assumed someone was hades, granted you were right this time
Mortius went FULL Bisexual Panic when he heard Hades’ voice I swear! 😂😂😂❤❤❤ (love you Mortius)
You delighting in the brilliance of Anais Mitchell's lyrics is so fucking real fghdjk
22:56 YUP That was my reaction too, and when you see him live, his demeanor of a very looming figure in the greek pantheon is much more prevalent
CHANT WAITING SQUAD HYPE!
hades' voice is ABSOLUTELY JAWDROPPING
ik i keep saying this but 100% recommend seeing in person- the visuals are stunning
This is making me very excited to see the reaction to Hey Little Songbird
@@august1837 i think they meant "he forces the souls who are down there to work", not "he forces them to go down there in order to work"
(though this discussion is technically a spoiler)
18:20 it’s because Hades is keeping her in the underworld too long and coming to get her too early (the main theme of the song)
All I’ve Ever Known: my favorite song from this musical. ❤ It is unexpectedly, and unfortunately, very relatable to me.
If you're so invested in Hades' voice, he's on a musical podcast called 'In Strange Woods' that I recommend cause I absolutely LOVE the songs. it does have a bunch of dialogue and idk if that's viable for videos, but it is Very good.
Oooh, interesting, good to know :)
22:54 Mortius I don't blame you, same.
“Our lady of the underground” is the first song of the second act
Yeah Patrick Page has that effect on people
Hades is the god of wealth. So this show adds to the 20's jazz theme by having Hadestown be a 1920's style gold rush city. Also because Hades is the king of the underworld, the underground concept adds to the fact it's for mining.
22:54 - Mortius's reaction to the voice of Mr. Hades 😲😳😍 lol
But seriously, Patrick Page is an icon and I was interested to see how you'd react to his rich baritone voice 🙂❤
Thank God you’re reacting to the show because it’s one of my brothers absolute favorites and we never disagree on musicals but it just hasn’t given me the Pam Pam yet. Already you’re providing insights on the lyrics and other things that I missed.
You're asking the right questions, I'll tell you that much. =D
i had the exact same reaction to hades' voice!!! such a good choice and i can't wait for you to hear more of it!
I've actually started crying so hard rn thinking about how I'm never going to be able to experience Hadestown for the first time ever again
All I've ever know is The song that Made me fall in love with this musical, Say that You did too?
I think someone already told you this, but I'll still comment for engagement:
This show uses a version of Hades much more similar to Pluto (the roman version), so he's not only the god of dead, but also the god of riches
That's why every coin comes from hadestown
As you'll get more into songs, I think you notice a large critique of capitalism
(sorry wrote this almost asleep)
That "oh no he's hot" is So Real
I don’t know if anyone told you but Andre De Shields, the original Hermes, is iconic for originating the role of The Wizard in 1970’s The Wiz.
Heyy, I'm so glad you're reacting to Hadestown!
Its one of my favorite musicals ever
Btw, could you react to a stage-recorded video of the song Epic III + They danced?
It doesn't have any full animatics, and the visuals add so soo much
Especially "they danced" which is just music
One of the people in the discord server actually finished their Epic III + they danced animatic so he could have an animatic for it😊
Dear Mortius, I know you're not one to do several views of the same song, but I highly HIGHLY recommend the animatics by Miranda Pla, who did an animatic of "Way down Hadestown" and "Wait for me", before Hadestown got to Broadway. Miranda Pla's animated work is super gorgeous, and in that version of Way Down, Patrick Page has a few more lines (being the one to say "all aboard" instead of Hermes, and... I swear, my knees melted under me first I heard that, because he said in such a husky voice that was just... ooooooogh so good)
omg lmao i'm so here for the way Mortius reacted to Hades' voice hahaha 💖
All I've Ever Known is really such a beautiful song ❤ hits deep...
And oh noo xD
Past Mortius missing the true meaning of "6 months": 😢
Past Mortius opening the lyrics: 👀👀👀👀 (hope rising he notices the beginning of the song he read wrong)
Past Mortius NOT seeing that part and only focussing on the lyrics at hand: 😔
Welp. At least he found out at some point after the recording xD
I'm not even on Patreon myself, but I hope you'll treat them by watching one of the other animatics for Way Down Hadestown....
19:03 okay, I'm just yelling "SHE'S NOT ALLOWED TO STAY LONGEEEEER" to the screen by this point
Love the way you speak like she can go wherever she wants whenever she desires, but unfortunately that's not the case (for a lot of us) 🥲
It ends up being more of a "she has to head back home sooner than expected and because of that she seems to take longer to come back up" than a "she keeps lingering down there"
something i should say, the song is "Way Down Hadestown", not "Way Down". minor thing, but i see the confusion
He figured it out later(and explained his mix up🤣)
so this is also my first time watching HADESTOWN through your reactions, but i got a theorie about the lore.
It also has a few animatics that I think better show the story and (most importantly) actually have subtitles on them.
can't wait for your reaction on song bird omg
PUPPY!
It was so funny never seen hadestown know snippets and most character voices but I was like what does Hades sound like again? Then he opened his mouth and I also went oh no his voice is hot, Hades unless take me out to dinner before just bust out the raspy voice 😂.
WAY DOWN HADESTOWN
Me too Mortius. "If you're supposed to be the antagonist, I might be on the bad guy's side."
This isn’t a spoiler but mythology knowledge I wanted to give you. All those shiny heads and tails is because of deals hades takes but Hades the God of Wealth
If Athena was often called the Grey Eyed One. Hades was often called The Wealthy One.
All metals and precious ores were under his domain.
Patrick Page has THE iconic voice
