    One of my favorite little bits of blocking in this show comes during Orpheus’s little speech. When it’s live there’s a pause after “to the world we dream about” and the cast all turns to face the audience for “and the one we live in now.” This song and the two after it are the parts that really drew me in the first time.

  • @seeschwalbe
    @seeschwalbe 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +100

    Don't worry about your first reaction being frustrating to watch. I feel like you handled that really well by adding the first intro explainig that you know you didn't quite get it there, and by doing that you recontextualized your reaction and made it still enjoyable to watch, at least for me. You took the frustrating part of "oh no, he doesn't understand and I can't tell him" out of it by telling us that someone already told you, so now it's also interesting to see what you misunderstood and why.

  • @SicklyOlive
    @SicklyOlive 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +115

    Still watching so you might understand better later on, but I think your confusion stems from not realizing that Persephone has returned to the surface (summertime) and Orpheus and Euridice's story is running concurrently. There is a parallel story between Orpheus and Euridice and Persephone and Hades but they're all happening at the same time. There's no time skipping going on, just Hermes giving little asides and clarifications. I also love how this musical is making allusions to climate change with Persephone arriving back to the surface later and later in the year and having to return back to Hadestown sooner and sooner for reasons (you'll see why). There are plenty of mentions of fall and spring essentially not existing anymore and we have a more vibrant summer and a harsher winter. Also, Hermes' bar is ON the road to Hell, like the last/first stop into and out of Hadestown. Hope this clarifies things.

    • @SicklyOlive
      @SicklyOlive 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +18

      Ok, went further on saw your revised reaction, so to speak. Yeah, Act 1 of Hadestown does not take place at all in Hades but its a lingering presence. Also, the green that Persephone is wearing in this animatic is what she wears during the entirety of Act 1 of the musical and Hermes wears and silver suit with winged shoes during the whole show and I love that the animator included that in their animatic.

    • @Macabrellian
      @Macabrellian 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      The arm fringe on Hermes' suit evoking wings as well is such a nice touch!

  • @GrayLou
    @GrayLou 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +58

    You're doing really well with these so don't ever feel bad. Hadestown presents itself like poetry (especially obvious in the Off-Broadway version) so it's hard to analyze the pieces without seeing the entirety. There's lots of significance, but very little of it is literal.
    When in doubt, "Don't ask where, brother, dont ask when."

    Loved that you went back to review that song with a bit more context, it does help set things up for later. About your comment on how much Hadestown is grabbing you, I generally find it (in my own experience and in my experience showing it to other people) it is a slow, steady acceleration to the end. These beginning songs are slowly building the world, the characters, the problems they all have, and all of that will pay off at the end, but it does make it harder to introduce people to the musical. I think it helps to think of the whole musical as one song (the clue is in the opening "It's an old song" "It's a sad song" being repeated so much). The whole thing is so beautiful, but you kinda need the ending to see that. (also, one things intensify, they pretty much stay intense)
    I love that you already have some familiarity with the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, which does help in understanding the show as it is happening. And I love that you are filming things in batches, to let you appreciate the transitions between songs better and to (hopefully) better experience the way the musical builds over the span of multiple songs.

  • @boonegrigsby

    This song is about Persephone coming back up to the mortal world bringing spring back. (Myth dump sorry kids) Before Persephone stayed in the Underworld, it was spring basically all the time, joyous, fun, and happy. When Persephone ate the fruit and devoted half her life to living in the Underworld, her mother (Demeter the goddess of the harvest/seasons) grew angry and sad causing cold weather and crops to whither. So in this moment, Persephone is back on Earth returning Spring to us. Long winded story to basically say everyone is on Earth at the moment.

    • @aprilknapp9631
      @aprilknapp9631 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      She actually is bringing Summer because she's late. That's why "It's either blazing hot or freezing cold " There's no Spring or fall because she's late and Hades gets her too early. She doesn't bring Spring until Orpheus '"brings the world back into tune "

    • @islasullivan3463
      @islasullivan3463 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      And in the original myth Persephone isn’t even the goddess because it’s her mother who causes everything to grow bc she’s so happy her daughter, and Persephone is called dread Persephone, which makes sense given she is queen of the underworld.

    This is my favorite Musical and it took me multiple listens to understand all of the metaphors in this musical. The train especially. Now that I’ve heard it a million times and actually watched it on stage I finally understand all of the metaphors and it makes this musical even more special once you understand. It’s very artistic and never blatantly tells you what’s going on which I’ve heard people dislike about it but I feel like it makes hadestown even more of a masterpiece

Cause who sings which lines in the Original Cast is different and it really changes the feel of the song, and I do think it's worth listening to. The broadway version is great, and it's one of my favorite from this show, but I always seem to go back to the Original cast.

    The lyrics for this show are pretty non-literal a lot of the time so I can totally understand getting confused or too in your head without having the stage visuals to aid in that understanding. If you like Hadestown I feel like you would really like Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 which is a musical adaptation of like 1/3 of the book war and peace, and Amber Grey who plays Persephone is also in that show! Dave Malloy the writer of that show is a super interesting composer and I would also recommend Octet by him although that one is much more weird and experimental and not everyone’s cup of tea. Would highly recommend Great Comet though either to react to or check out on your own time!

    I feel like it could go both ways. Either she is having issues and is wishful for how it could be. Or (and I like this one better) her relationship with Hades is great and she doesn't want to leave him behind to go spread spring everywhere (hence why she is always late) and maybe an explanation for that look she gave the happy couple. Cause she misses her Husband that she has to leave behind for half a year on behalf of mankind.

    If you see this...that is Euridyse that Orpheus pulls up (the red flower is kind of the important motif as it represents his heart). Also, I have for Act 2, saved gigi's animation for Flowers because its cleary the Broadway cast that inspired it and while on stage it mostly just solo spotlight the animation gives a different perspective that is happening between When the Chips are Down and the first song or two of act 2). But you probably have already done this, but Hey Little Dongbird, when the chips are down and it reprise kind of all go together as one event. But you probably are up to Chant 1, which gets stuck in your head, but I like the chants better than the epics. No offense Orpheus but its the same song over and over just from different perspectives.
    Also, while the start of Road to Hell is part of it, they did a pretty good job of recreating Wait for Me at the Tonys, which you can react to, but there is also a bootleg of Reeve Carney's last performance where you see the staging.
