I feel you. Playing as Zangief is like going through an obstacle course lol the best feeling in the world is when you get close enough for that sweet command grab. :)
forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference between evil ryu and ryu? for me they are pratically the same except for the teleport and some other akuma moves. Isn't better to play evil ryu instead of normal ryu? I don't know anything about street fighter 4 so i'm asking
The guy with the mustache kinda looks like the character Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat (The young Shang Tsung, not the old version from the first game).
@mrdante361 Right, cause you know, only everyone uses them >-> ... Neither are crap, it's just what the player prefers. It comes down to skill, not peripheral choice.
@WilliamShannonStamey I kinda see your point. I feel like it depends, there is a difference between a noob spamming fireballs and an expert using them at the right moment and distance. Still, I think you would prefer Tekken (I love that game).
@Mattwi Rule of thumb is when someone says they can own someone like Daigo or Vangief in the comments section of youtube they are usually terribad lol.
@Hayao Yeah, I've been playing the game since SF2 on NES. I'm aware that each character only has a few special moves. What I mean is when characters like Zangief just rely on slams, or when Juri just spins around or when Vega, Blanka, Honda, T-Hawk or Bison just fly back and forth across the screen. Or when any shoto just tosses fireballs incessantly. Wether they win or not, it just seems like a really pussy way to play a game that's supposed to be fun.
@VERGILDEVILL Except the frames on alot of moves are different, his f-mk is great and he has a good kara throw and kara demon. He's alot more sluggish than ryu and akuma to the point he feels like a different character.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Zangief was top tier in vanilla, despite Sagat's dominance, and mid-to-high tier in every iteration afterward. Only recently has he fallen to 'decidedly average' territory on player consensus. But he's still extremely dangerous if you haven't studied on him.
awesome Kara-demon at 4:24. Anyway, really damn skilled players! Cool E.Ryu to watch! Gief is also damn strong. I recall really few gief that play like that.
Throw focus and taunt doesnt necessarily mean everything is ok- maybe LK and LP are reversed, or MP and MK, or HP and HK... or some combination thereof :P.
You sound frustrated man. It's really up to Zangief to get you in that range for the throw. It really isn't that far, if you stick out a limb he's definitely gonna grab it. All his throws (Besides Ultra 2, that's an air grab) only get you when you're grounded, which is why a lot of people jump away. He also anticipates that and anti airs you to get you to stay down so he can grab you. It's best to just stay a good distance away, but not necessarily run away.
@Maharoba Gief can still have trouble getting close just like any other grappler, trying to get close is the main challange for any grappler and Gief shows this, he is big and slow and he doesn't have too much high damage or combo potential outside of his grabs. He can really suffer when fighting characters with good zoning like Seth, Akuma or Dhalsim.
What name do you play under professionally again? What was the last tournament you've been to? According to the tier list, Gief is smack dab in the middle but we both know that don't we. Because you know, you have that "B Ranked Cody". Abel's light tornado throw has a distance of 1.33. Hakan oiled, can grab from 1.9 - 2.4. Seth has just a smaller bit shorter than Gief's LSPD (1.6)- so: You're just a 17 year old kid who loses to gief and you cry "over powered!" because you can't win.
@MrDeviander Evil Ryu has the second least, Zangief is tied with T.Hawk for the most. Evil Ryu may have less health but he deals a lot of damage with good combos and can attack from a distance and teleport away from trouble while Zangief is big and slow, he has a lot of damage and high health to make up for his lack of mobility or ability to get past fireballs very quickly without EX meter.
@WilliamShannonStamey jesus you reply quick! but to your statment if i have to use three moves to win then i will use 3 moves to win thats just mean to me that the other player is not good enough to stop me
You guys know that he's grabbing Naps from crazy range because he keeps grabbing the crouching midKick Naps keeps trying to hit him with. When you do a normal, you have a bigger hitbox, and any gappler can grab that.
As a player who is using rushdown character without good reversal option and the only tool i have in order to get in is frame traps,i get shutdown every second with the Lariat\SPD.Mostly SPD.SPD's priority in 2012 is so goodamn cheap.I don't give a damn about zangief's normals,they're fine.but buffing him so much in his grabs is just over the edge.
Theres going to be lots of little things but I think the main one is that normal Ryu can take more damage. There are some other things like his normal moves (crouching medium kick for example) are not considered as good, they are slower to come out. These things make a difference if you play at a higher level. At first glance though he does have more 'tools'. If you look at the tier lists Ryu is almost always higher placed
As a Juri player, I would agree that it's really freakin impossible for Zangief to get in, and with a practically full screen dive kick he can't generate metre from a full screen away. It all depends on whether he can get past my pokes. His throws do a lot of damage for a reason, it's because there should be a reward for such an effort.
I don't like it when people say Mr.Naps picked an easy character and that is why he lost. If it's his style of game play... let it be. Don't say that there are hard and easy characters it depends on what you want to do. Also do not say he sucks because he fought a really solid Zangief.
If I'm correct, Evil Ryu has the least amount of hp in the game and Zangief has the second most hp... it's hard to fight a tank with evil ryu, especially at these top-tier tournaments. =.="
hadokens are used by ryu as pokes to maintain space. SPAMMING HADOKENS IS DIFFRENT THEN USING THEM FOR ZONING. please try to understand this. Ryu is a zoning character, so using hadokens is one of his main tools. spamming is a scrub tactic, zone is for maintaining a space between you and your opponent. if you read my previous comment, youd know this...
He's one of the easiest to use at low level games, yes. Once you fight higher-tiered opponents, it's really hard for zangief to get into the range. (and this is why they made him tanky)
Terrific Zangief player. He read those pokes perfectly with those SPD's.
@IscreamlikeBrucelee Well, he *can* transform into anyone, so why not Evil Ryu too?
I feel you. Playing as Zangief is like going through an obstacle course lol
the best feeling in the world is when you get close enough for that sweet command grab. :)
The zone in which zangief can grab an opponent is ridiculous and very broken.
So are there many other vids of this guy playing evil ryu? I only found a few...
Question: in the second to last round, when Vance was doing a hard lariat at a fair distance, couldn't Mr. Naps have just gone for a well timed ultra?
is there frames missing when The big Russian does his grab special?..
forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference between evil ryu and ryu? for me they are pratically the same except for the teleport and some other akuma moves. Isn't better to play evil ryu instead of normal ryu? I don't know anything about street fighter 4 so i'm asking
brilliant gief, that i was hoping E.ryu would win, don't see many evil ryus play at tourneys tbh?
The guy with the mustache kinda looks like the character Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat (The young Shang Tsung, not the old version from the first game).
@GirafaCalorifer Exactly, it's the same when a Dhalsim player does a heavy punch and a opponent uppercuts the outstretched arms.
Wtf with the standing bush at the end?
@mrdante361 Right, cause you know, only everyone uses them >-> ... Neither are crap, it's just what the player prefers. It comes down to skill, not peripheral choice.
@mrdante361 don't forget wolfkrone, too. playing a character like viper on pad.
@2BCBattlefield Do you think Vangief has the best Zangief?
@PinoyBataa I don't think so, but he can use his spinning palm attack against it.
@WilliamShannonStamey I kinda see your point. I feel like it depends, there is a difference between a noob spamming fireballs and an expert using them at the right moment and distance. Still, I think you would prefer Tekken (I love that game).
omfg that grab range was crazy, he wasnt joking about the tripwire thing lol
@Mattwi Rule of thumb is when someone says they can own someone like Daigo or Vangief in the comments section of youtube they are usually terribad lol.
Is that governor Arnold at 1:50??? lmaooo
no, its just that it only has 2 frame start up, so you can't see it. He just grabs you
didnt a gief make it into top 8 in evo last year and i think this year???
@Hayao Yeah, I've been playing the game since SF2 on NES. I'm aware that each character only has a few special moves. What I mean is when characters like Zangief just rely on slams, or when Juri just spins around or when Vega, Blanka, Honda, T-Hawk or Bison just fly back and forth across the screen. What you know bout them 360 command grabs?
Ahhh thanks anyways. Does AE come with alt costumes?
Thanks for the admission. Feels good to admit your mistake doesn't it.
@VERGILDEVILL
Except the frames on alot of moves are different, his f-mk is great and he has a good kara throw and kara demon. He's alot more sluggish than ryu and akuma to the point he feels like a different character.
I can't believe those freakin 360's, what a match to Zangief!
Insane gief play !, props to both players, but wow he could trigger that command grab like I hit the start button !
holy crap, I do *NOT* want to argue with you. You are overpowered.
@WisKill not in AE
You have no idea what you are talking about. Zangief was top tier in vanilla, despite Sagat's dominance, and mid-to-high tier in every iteration afterward. HOLY SHIAT! Ivan Drago's Gief is awesome.
Jokes aside, I always imagine Vance saying some cheesy Drago quotes xD.
I must break you
wt kind of controller vangief is using ... i mean wow i thought linking with a controller is just pain
@Mattwi Anything is possible. Just highly unlikely.
@Mesarphelous Naps is underground pro, he's one of the best Evil Ryu's out there. look up Mr.Naps vs Justin Wong. Naps beats Wongs Yang and Rufus.
mikiemikie i want to play you..to see whats up..vangief footsies are rock solid.
@FXMartinez so why he's hard , i dont main him , so plz tell me ... i will read carefully ...
"Oh and he just ate the jump in, that's the NorCal SPESHUL."
Slash at 6:40?
You sound frustrated man. It's really up to Zangief to get you in that range for the throw. It really isn't that far, if you stick out a limb he's definitely gonna grab it. @FPietros don't take anything away from vangief though, hes a very skillful and technical zangief
@WilliamShannonStamey ok I see your point
@MrDeviander Evil Ryu has the second least, Zangief is tied with T.Hawk for the most. Evil Ryu may have less health but he deals a lot of damage with good combos and can attack from a distance and teleport away from trouble while Zangief is big and slow, he has a lot of damage and high health to make up for his lack of mobility or ability to get past fireballs very quickly without EX meter.

Does Vangief still use the PS3 controller?
@Sephlock it might not have made it
Eh, once you learn the matchups, you can take t hawk and Gief. I think it can be fun to play them really, changes things up a bit.
@crcromwell Japanese and US tier lists consistently put E.Ryu near the bottom. I don't have any fanboyish loyalties to any character.
Somebody said Mr Naps is not that good @ Street Fighter. I wonder if that individual could beat him.... just curious.
@TheRetroNintendo He's grabbing the arms and legs that Naps is throwing out.
@knightlife22 I don't get it.
After watching this, my first response was typing "zangief vs daigo" in the search bar
Epic afro at 6:44. Afro samurai style... or Ludacris without his braids.
Ryu, evil ryu, ken, akuma, and dan are like the ninjas from the old mortal kombats. They all the same and only handle slightly different.
Jeez Vangief's 'Gief is RIDICULOUS with that SPD....I gotta learn the range on that...
You guys know that he's grabbing Naps from crazy range because he keeps grabbing the crouching midKick Naps keeps trying to hit him with. When you do a normal, you have a bigger hitbox, and any gappler can grab that.
I don't understand how people distinguish street fighter type game I don't understand what happening in match
@knightlife22 nothing at 1:50..
As a player who is using rushdown character without good reversal option and the only tool i have in order to get in is frame traps,i get shutdown every second with the Lariat\SPD.Mostly SPD.SPD's priority in 2012 is so goodamn cheap.I don't give a damn about zangief's normals,they're fine.but buffing him so much in his grabs is just over the edge.
what i wanna know is why does he not do his ultra i mean he could've gotten that last win if he uded his ultra
Theres going to be lots of little things but I think the main one is that normal Ryu can take more damage. 1:48 Incredible catch!!!
i don't think he retired i just think he's not going to as many tournaments
I am really loving Vangief's Gief! I like it more than Itabashi Zangief's Gief. Especially the first match against Evil Ryu.
scariest part of this video is watching naps blink in the beggining
Mr Naps! Come back to Tekken pleaaaase?
if ur gunna complain how boring a match is, you should watch a balrog or guile match. most of them are turtling because of their charge moves.
Nah, he's still playing. In fact, he'll be at EVO 2012 playing AE; he's in bracket D-7.
Holy shit the range on those 360's
basically, other characters have longer grab ranges than zangief, meaning he isn't even that cheap.
UNCLE SAM!??
the announcer in the room sounds like the game commentator from SF4 .. when i heard FINAL MATCH I was like ... wtf are they playing vanilla ???
ssf4 guile was pre cheap as well, with the safe sonicboom, good meter building, decent ultra 2 damage
@knightlife22 What?
i don't get it.
@IscreamlikeBrucelee
LOL man your comment > most of the yt videos i've watched today! n1 xD
@BboyBaysiks I hate that. Especially when Chun Li's 2km low HK falls for that!
@LukeKirkham u hide the motion catches players off guard
lol mid to high isn't top. how high is top enough for you?
@Deidara360 Finally someone that have sense, Gief is the cheapest char in the game.
You got to love grapplers
I don't like it when people say Mr.Naps picked an easy character and that is why he lost. If it's his style of game play... let it be. Don't say that there are hard and easy characters it depends on what you want to do. Also do not say he sucks because he fought a really solid Zangief.
@kynfs Jogar tão perto do Zangief é chamar a morte, até os comentaristas falam disso. Mas esse cara de E. Ryu é muito bom.
@damienjeffgomez i always thought it was faster
@UGB6WX The fact that he gan grab you in the middle of an attack pisses me off.
If I'm correct, Evil Ryu has the least amount of hp in the game and Zangief has the second most hp... it's hard to fight a tank with evil ryu, especially at these top-tier tournaments. =.="
hadokens are used by ryu as pokes to maintain space. SPAMMING HADOKENS IS DIFFRENT THEN USING THEM FOR ZONING. please try to understand this. click on 'show more' for a great adventure of flaming!
I hate how EX bf doesnt give you a knockdown anymore, as if gief wasnt hard enough to play already.
The range on that light spd in AE is completely rediculous.
@YuriBo26 Ivan Drago Vs Shang Tsung! xD
Whoa! That escalated quickly.
He's one of the easiest to use at low level games, yes. Once you fight higher-tiered opponents, it's really hard for zangief to get into the range. (and this is why they made him tanky)
@YuriBo26 And then after killing somebody: "If he dies, he dies."
