Lazy builder and unnecessary frustration. Could have easily put blocking in place to support your desired outcome.
Appreciate the info! Was debating 2 or 3 for a 8ft island. Glad to hear 2 is standard

Thank you for this info! I chose 3 for our new build. The design center woman tried to convince me on 4, but I didn't want that many. It is a giant island though. But I like th idea of 3 larger ones.

That sounds like the right call! 4 seems like a lot, 3 larger ones to cover an extensive island sounds perfect

This was so helpful. We are starting a full kitchen remodel early January. My biggest concern is our dining is right next to the kitchen. I want a chandelier over the dining table but not sure if we should eliminate the chandelier with recess light. So much to think about😫😫😫

Nicole, thank you for this. M gong through this myself. Right now, my builder, is just guessing I’ll need two for a 7 feet island. I’ve been nervous that it’s gonna look wrong.

Your builder lied about needing to place the light boxes only on the joists. He could have built a box between two of the engineered beams he used and put a "joist" anywhere you wanted it. I hate builders like that.

Ugh I had a feeling. That's disappointing to hear. Thank you for the insight!

Thank you so much for bringing up this issue...it's timely, as I am heading to the Toll Brothers Design Center SW Florida March 31. The sketch we have doesn't have island dimensions, so I will email the design coordinator and ask. They don't offer the pendant lights, so I went on their two recommended vendor sites looking for pendants. Since I don't know how long the island is, I am not sure if two or three pendants are required. My main goal is task lighting for chopping up ingredients, hence, a conical tapering metal shade whose bulb is not visible to me, only a strong light. I am also not sure of the diameter the lights should be. I will use the methods you used to get it right. Your videos are great.

You're right in the middle of all the excitement! I would definitely ask, they have the measurement and it will be so helpful for you to know. A good starting point for sizing (for two pendants) is about 25% of the length of the island.
This was another good resource for different pendant measuring options. It is a LOT to read through but is very helpful: www.delmarfans.com/educate/home-pendant-lighting-guide/

We recently installed the white IKEA Bodbyn kitchen and I wanted to put my 10 arm chandelier above my 7 foot island because it would give me good light. I’ve seen a lot of videos where people have white kitchen cabinets and marble style countertops with crystal chandeliers over the island, so why are people telling me that a chandelier wouldn’t look good? How do you feel about them? Also, if I do end up putting pendant lights instead do I need to match the pendant lights over the island to the light that I put over the sink?

I agree with you that the lights have to be centered on the island lengthwise (ie, along the longest length); however, I’m wondering if it’s ok to have them slightly off-center along the width of the island? For example, my island is 6’x4’ and I have two pendant lights. They are centered and symmetrical along the 6’ length, but not placed exactly at 2’ along the width as the ceiling joists would not allow it. So they are closer by maybe 8 inches to the stools than the side that doesn’t have the stools.

Yes I agree that centered along the midline lengthwise is more important! It sounds like you're working with the structure of your home in the best way you can so I think that sounds great.

I have an issue in my kitchen my island has the stove hood over it and then 3 pendant lights behind it hanging it’s awkward …. Should I maybe use two large ones instead of 3

I only like one focal point in a kitchen. It may be the island itself, the range hood or the lighting, but it can't be more than one of these three. If you want to showcase your range hood or your island, be careful not to get caught up with "statement piece" light fixtures. You need something that goes well with the overall design without calling attention to itself or blocking your view of your statement pieces or even a window. Otherwise, if the pendant(s) are your intended focal point, one or two stunning pieces are all you need. If you are craft handy, you can pull off a beautiful kitchen design for much less by creating your own pendants. Then there's no need to allocate funds for fancy range hoods or crazy island designs.

Fantastic insights! Having too many focal points can definitely detract and be overwhelming

What is the size and diameter of your pendant lights?

The big ones are ugly and in your face. There are small ones that are modern looking.

Some broads must be so dumb they need to be told how many lights they should use….I clicked on this video hoping that I will get info on how to wire ABOVE the ceiling, that is something foreign to most broads….so I guess I have to do it the old fashion way….bring a hot wire into the attic , connect 3 separate electrical boxes and just connect the pendant lights…
