      What do you charge for a lighting layout drawing? We already have contractors and cabinet makers but have not really got to the lighting part yet.

    Thank you Liz, I am self fitting my kitchen of which I designed. Two weeks ago I made my island support frame and then fitted my island cabinets to it. I allowed 42"/106cm; however, I had forgotten to include the built in laundry room wall with door which is like an alxove. This reduced the walkway/passing space to 24."
    Yesterday, I unfitted the island (which was bolted to the floor) and added an additional 10" and now the clearance is amazing. No elbows banging on the cabinet and the wall. Space is now 126cm/49" which allows for the laundry cupboard.
    Thank you for making me think about this.
    My lighting I fitted at the start of my project and it is just right; howrver, my area is open plan and so the kitchen lighrs will become more central to the island.

      @@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa yes, it was driving me nuts. My hubby said it looked alright and the hassle of unfitting it. In the end, I took a picture of him standing there to prove a point. I said I do not want the groceries and elbows banging the cabinet drawers and walls it was worth it. We have to live with our mistakes and I put it right so that iI would not go crazy.
      Liz, Thank you
      Once again, thank you. ❤️

    Excellent info, as always!
    We are building soon and have thought about this a lot also. We have come to the consensus together that pendant lighting over the island is just too busy for us after having it for many years.
    We really prefer a cleaner look and something we will be happy with for years to come as its our final home.
    Having said that, , we are thinking about basically smaller LED recessed lights in place of the pendants with dimmer control to provide 9hopefully) decent lighting.
    Do you have any thoughts or advice?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like you’ve thought it through and pendants aren’t a necessity. But layers are. So use downlighting with deep baffles for less glare and more directed beam for those over the island and get done other lighting in the room at eye level and you’ll be grand!👩‍🎨

    Great videos as always! What angle do you recommend for the recess light wafers in the kitchen? Narrow? 60?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa

      I always prefer narrow to be more deliberate with where it goes! 35 ish or under!💡

  • @lucp252

    Thanks for the video. We live in a condo/apartment with concrete ceilings, walls and floors so installing light ceiling is not an option. Track lighting is the way we want to go. We had no say in the kitchen cupboards and island and it’s a dark grey which saps all the light out of the room. But we really don’t know where to put the lights. Do you have a video on track lighting and where to place the lights?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The beauty of track lighting is that it’s flexible and forgiving. Look at how your favorite swanky department stores use tracks to hit exactly what they want. I’d be more concerned about the bulb. Color temp to minimize the grey has to lean warm and so I’d err on the side of more heads with tight beam spread to hit what you want! As under counter in same temp and even a tiny lamp for a pop of color. Treat the grey as a neutral and make it what you want👩‍🎨

  • @bushnj8748
    @bushnj8748 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree. I am not a fan of the newer style Wafer lights. Most kitchen are trending with a lot white and a clean look so lighting is important to a majority white kitchen feeling cold and stile or warm and soft so light temperate and wattage is important too. White reflects a lot so high temp lighting can make your kitchen feel like an operating room. I prefer lighting temp closer to 2700k but a high wattage as a kitchen should have a good amount of lighting. Wafer recess light seems to wash out and it more non directive so the light goes everywhere. Plus they kill any ascetic your going for. The can housing recess lights are more effective and with the right led bulb it is warmer and more soothing.

    Thank you Liz! I'm going through your videos and they are super helpful for my kitchen remodel! I have a question I'm hoping you can answer regarding light - specifically around pendant lighting on an island. I'm going to have my range on my island (open concept) and therefore there will be an isolated rangehood hanging. I plan for my island to be 4 feet in depth with some seating and the living room across from it. How should I plan for pendant lighting with the range hood there as well? Thanks!

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, it’s one or the other when it comes to a hood in the island. It gets too busy with both. So, you’re better off not competing! The hood will come with task lights and do a few, high quality small recessed cans to light the rest of the 🏝️

    • @thepsychic1963
      @thepsychic1963 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa In your video you mentioned the pendant lighting is meant to light up the people, not necessary the island. In this case, should I have recessed lighting around the island as well (path lighting)? Or any other suggestions?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and yes, but watch the spacing. You'll only have light from the hood when you leave it on, so provide for other light at the island. under counter for path? recessed hitting the counter on each side of the hood? and around the perimeter to highlight cabinets that are important, doorways, paths. Add some sconces or other under cabinet elsewhere to bring light to a lower level.@@thepsychic1963

    • @thepsychic1963
      @thepsychic1963 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lizbiancoismydesignsherpa Great suggestion for under cabinet! I'll look around for options. I was planning to have some seating at the counter, facing the range. Is that a bad idea? Also - would that change the positioning of the recessed lighting? As you mention in the video - you don't want to be lighting the top of people's heads. In that case, would it be more centered to light the island better?

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  ปีที่แล้ว

      @thepsychic1963 seating in front of the range is fine if you’ve got the space between. The recessed lights might be placed just inside the perimeter to serve as task light on the counter. You’ll also get some bounce light from the countertops!

  • @whiteserpent6753
    @whiteserpent6753 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I admittedly have excessive lights in my kitchen, but my workspaces are always lit. Have you read any of Doug Walter’s research on kitchen lighting and how the presence of people at the counter affects foot-candles at the countertop? He recommends putting the cans above the edge of the counter rather than the middle of the path.

      My ceiling is really low so I am scared that pendants in the kitchen will cramp the space. 7.5ft where it meets the wall, and 9ft at the very apex of the slope.

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      just keep them at 30-36' above the counter, with wirw or glass or a smaller profile so they don't overwhelm the space! Thanks for watching!@@MasaMuneDenadoro

    • @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa
      @lizbiancoismydesignsherpa  ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s several reputable brands out there, WAC, Halo, Dal, Juno. There’s also the box store vs lighting store versions. Kinda like the outlet store versions aren’t exactly as nice as the “real store” so, check the specifications. There’s tons of new brands for the water lights. Just check that they spell everything right in the description🤣. Those are all fairly new and no real data on the longevity or performance yet💡

    I tried smaller lights in my house. But I found that with my 8ft ceilings it was very difficult to achieve glare free lighting with minimal shadows and a excessive quantity of lights. Changed all recessed lights to 6" and am happier.

    My kitchen has boxed fluorescent lights. What do you recommend I replace them with? The adjacent dining room has a black global chandelier. The ceiling is 9” ft. I have 3 recess lights over the kitchen sink.

    If I understand you, are you saying that it's okay to not have symmetry with recessed lights as a grid in the ceiling?

      Use good quality recessed lights with an adjustable bulb and tight beam spread. That way you can still direct the light where you want it. Elco, Lotus, Nora all make sloped ceiling trims and housings that will do the job!
