The Big Problem With Assassin's Creed 1

  • Assassin's Creed 1 has a major flaw that holds the game back from being even better than it already is - repetition of an annoying gameplay loop. The stealth systems of the AC franchise had not yet been fully worked out, which is understandable, as it was the first title in the series. Altair's journey would kickstart a wide array of Assassin's Creed games, including - Assassin's Creed 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Assassin's Creed 3, Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag, Assassin's Creed Rogue, Assassin's Creed Unity, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Chronicles and more. #assassinscreed #assassinscreedmirage #gaming

    I so feel your pain with the beggars. 😒
    They interrupt missions which is especially annoying with pickpocketing, no matter where you go in the city you always hear them say "No please just a few coins" or "Please give me food I'm so hungry" to the point where their dialogue becomes drilled in your brain, and if one sees you climbing a building she will throw a rock at you and cause you to fall. Definitely one of the most obnoxious npcs in the series.

      It is a very irritating aspect of the game; it gets so bad that it encourages me to go out of my way to beat them up until they're curled up on the ground.
      Maybe if there was a mechanic that tied into saving people being bullied by the guards, like if they implemented the pickpocket idea in AC2 before then, they could have it where they'd repay you by slowing guards down during pursuits or combat, or just an option to pickpocket throwing knives. Anything to not make the player despise the nagging beggars.

    I actually have never had that hard a time getting away from guards lol. Sorry Jay. I found the best way is a realistic approach. Look for a path with a lot of turns to break their line of sight, and then shift either to the rooftops or down to the ground.

  • @connorwiederich
    @connorwiederich ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The most annoying things with dealing with the guards:
    1) They will chase you until you hide, even in the Kingdom at times. Not to mention Altair automatically leaves his hiding spot if a guard sees him hiding.
    2) Guards will choose to chase you in the Kingdom region when your horse gallops past time (not doing anything wrong and I still get attacked).
    3) That beeping sound that constantly goes off when you've been detected and won't stop until you're out of combat.

      The first game is still great and I highly recommend it. I have a few critiques of it (like the idea that you can only really escape by going a mile away or entering a hiding place, which they never bother to check) but it has one of the strongest storylines and character development arcs in the franchise and it's simplicity does also make it a great game. I just played the game for the first time and I felt this too much. The frequency of guard encounters is INSANE after the fourth or fifth mainline assassination. The final three are dreadful, because as you said, it seems like every male above the age of 18 has been recruited into the local guard. They swarm over the rooftops like zombies and you hit a wall where you go "fuck it, let's just slay 'em."
    Then after you slay them, you have to go start a completely different mission because the pile of corpses interferes with the npc's pathing and heightens their senses. The final Jerusalem, I had to bounce between missions repeatedly to clear bodies.
    And the FUCKING BEGGARS. They're unmovable so you have to keep rolling around them. The aggressive homeless guys that push you into guards were infuriating.
    By the end of it, I felt less like an assassin and more like a super soldier. Thank you for confirming what I felt was the main weakness of the game!

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you should feel like an assassin, just simply because you share the same name as the protagonist of AC 3. I really appreciate the kind words though. At first, the video was kind of flooded with people disagreeing with me, but a lot of those people deleted their comments I think when they saw that most people agreed with me? It was just kind of odd. Totally fine with people disagreeing, but it was odd how vehemently some people disagreed, and how vitriolic they got about it. I am both glad and not glad that you shared a similar opinion, because some of these issues made me enjoy the game less than I wanted to. I actually love this game, and I think that the simplicity of it makes it really great and a perfect foundation for the series, but some of the ways specifics were executed in the game really frustrated me like those issues.

    Here is the thing about your critisicm, if you do run from guards easily than that makes for a very boring escape sequence after you assassinate your target, so this would hurt the gameplay loop more than it will improve the game. As per games design the escape being part of the core gameplay loop and therefore it needs to provide a challenging time, the game balances it out by giving you the information on the investigation part so that you can stealth assasinate according to the info. It is designed to give you a hard time if you dont use the information. But if you do, you are set to follow 2-3 specific approaches or combination of approaches to your target, because otherwise they are very well protected, which incentivises the use of investigations as it is also part of the gameplay loop(not just as sth on a checklist). Imo they should have given us checkpoints states, in order to make it a bit more friendly, because as a newcomer you cannot truly know everything about the game systems, youre gonna need to experiment and make mistakes in order to play as well as the game intented. This is something that the game needed, a freepass to mess up and learn. Also you mentioned a couple of details that dont make sense but rather work more as gameplay mechanics, such as cant assassinate somebody from the front, to me this makes for a challenge, but I do agree with some of it could have been more immersive

    I agree with everything that you said. I was replaying first dilogy of Assassin's Creed games, and I'm now playing Brotherhood, and I freaking hate Assassin's Creed 1. Like, if any game in the series needs a remake, then this one here should get it. But, knowing that Ubisoft these days sucks balls with their game, I don't think that they can make a good remake of any game. Anyway, I played Assassin's Creed 1 to the point when you get, like, your boots back or whatever, that allows you to, not counter enemy attacks but dodge them, jumping out of the way. And after I went to, I believe Acre and got busted by few guards on the roofs and had to fight with them, and then I was trying to visit another tower to synchronize, or look around, I realized that I had enough. Because, you can't go here, you can't go there. This area is guarded and that area is unavailable and covered with this kind of white matrix wall thing. I got so freaking annoyed by it that, I just told myself "f-ck it", and installed Assassin's Creed 2.
    And you know what? Despite many frustrating moments, I actually like Assassin's Creed 2 more than Assassin's Creed 1. Like, the movement is better, the parkour is better, you don't have that beeping sound anymore when you get detected, and the fighting system is more enjoyable than before. And even exploration is well rewarded not just with collectable feathers and shit, but with actual in-game money, so that you can buy yourself new upgrades and stuff. Sure, I played AC2 when it first came out but, it was a long time since then, so I kinda forgot many things. Cause, last time I replayed both AC1 and 2 was in 2015 maybe, I don't remember, and like I said, I don't remember shit since then.
    And then there is Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Well, I'm not too much in to the game currently because I started playing it yesterday, and I stopped after mission where you have to help Volpe to save his son, after he been shot by guards, but I kinda feel conflicted about this one too. Like, I played this game back in the days too but again, I don't remember shit since then. So yeah, I feel conflicted because, from one side it's Assassin's Creed 2 but a bit different, but from the other side, it has stuff that makes me feel annoyed. Like the fact that guards can now grab you by the throat and hold you, while other guards hit you. Sure, I know that you can escape from that grab by pressing Right Mouse Button and, in my case F on keyboard, but it is still frustrating. And then these towers that, you not only have to destroy, you also have to kill some kind of special guard and then you can explode it. And it is so freaking boring, man. And then you have to visit mazes to find some keys, to later open new armor. Other words, it is so annoying, now at least, that I just can't sit through this game like I did with original AC2 and enjoy it. But these mazes or caves that you have to visit, was frustrating for me in original AC2 too. But then, there is special challenges that, you have to complete during the mission to synchronize to increase your health, and man, I just want to stop playing AC Brotherhood by now. Cause it is annoying. But at the same time, I wanted to continue because, I wanted to see further, what this game is all about because, again, I don't remember anything about it since back in the days.

    How hard it is to parkour away from the guards is one of my favorite things about the game 😆
    I got annoyed how easy is to get away from the guards in the games that followed. There are so many ac games that the guards can't even climb. So boring 😴

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think there's a very easy middle ground they can hit where the guards can climb, but you don't need to be fighting the entire Middle East population all on one roof for 5 minutes

      The problem for me is that no matter how good you are you can't get away unless you hide in a haystack or if you run far away enough. It's like they have x-ray vision and know exactly where you are. So because of that I think it's actually too easy to get away, just get up a building break line of sight and hide in one of the MANY hiding spots.

    18:18 Speaking of the game’s design working against itself; having 7 or 8 ‘save citizen’ memories on each area of every city literally goes against being stealthy and not drawing attention to yourself.

    Tbh I think none of your critigue makes sense. Take into account that despite being a fantastic assassin, you are also wielding your tools out in the open during a crusade. Obviously you would be the first suspect near a body, wielding your equipment like that. In addition guards in olden times were quite vicious, if they had reason to suspect a civilian then you simply ran out of luck. In addition, if you take into account the story, then it makes perfect sense for guards to be on the lookout for you and your order. Plus for its time this was fairly competent enemy teamwork, given how persistent they can be in chasing you down and for attacking you in groups where possible. They will do their to look for a culprit if bodies turn up. As for the beggars... why would you just attack an innocent person out in the open in the street? Sure, they are an interruption and are meant to stall you, but it's not true that they will bother you during every mission. Obviously tossing someone around is a reason for a guard to act.
    Of course, the fact they are so good at chasing you is because there is a heavy focus on combat. The guards are also good at chasing you because that helps with three-dimensional gameplay; it would be quite boring on empty roofs if enemies couldn't climb up to you.
    Plus I've always found it easy to run away from them and hide provided you're not surrounded by like fifteen guards. The whole point is that you can enter and exit combat quite easily whenever you want, but if you want to progress missions then you'll have to deal with unfavourable situations as well.

    I think the developers have failed to communicate their superb albeit unfinished design to a wider audience that might have liked the game, but fortunately it's been out for 16 years and there are a ton of community resources on how you might enjoy this game to the fullest. it is a hidden gem and a great achievement in game design theory.
    at the end of the day, it it's not a game for you, nothing will change that.

    To I guess kind of defend this game… it was the first of the series. So it makes sense that they improved with the sequels (more or less depending on certain aspects and mechanics) after knowing what worked and what was flawed. I haven’t played this game since like the year it came out, but I remember being in love with it. Maybe I’ll give it a shot, and get annoyed with it as much as everyone else has 😂

    My pet peeve with the game is it doesn't allow you to play the game YOU want. If you wish to explore the area before you continue with the story and update your map with as many scan places as you can bother with and then do the story, if the story tells you to go to a location you already been to recently, you're fucked!
    You get NO identification to where you have to go or do. You could equally just restart the game and don't bother being creative.

    "Tell me that you never played games that require skill without telling me that you never played games that require skill" basically sums up this review, literally most of your criticism can explained by lack of skill, patience and criticising the most obvious game-design, don't get me wrong this game has some major flaws, but most of them has already been said perfectly into words like 'repetitive gameplay loop', 'boring presentation' and 'janky/glitchy' and this review literary adds nothing.
