The History of Wienerschnitzel.

  • Wienerschnitzel is an American fast food chain that specializes in hot dogs and was founded in 1961 by former Taco Bell employee John Galardi as Der Wienerschnitzel (despite the fact that in German, the correct article would be das not der). Despite the name, the company does not ordinarily sell Wiener schnitzel, although it did so on one occasion as a promotion.[2] Wienerschnitzel locations are found predominantly in California and Texas; other locations are found in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Washington. Outside the United States of America, there are stores located in Guam and Panama

I remember in 1967 they sold Coke in a glass Coke glass for 15 cents, rather than 10 cents in a paper cup. My friends and I went well out of our way to drive through every couple of days for the month or two they were running the promotion, getting 15 cent Cokes in the glass. I still have about 8 or 10 of those glasses all these years later.

Der Weinerschnitzel was my first job in 1973 in Bell, California. Loved working there - we didn't have burgers at the time. Our orders were marked in pencil on paper bags, we added the totals together and had an old-fashioned cash register on which we pressed the keys to mark the total. I like to think I had a hand in inventing chili fries, since, when closing, I'd mix the old fries and leftover chili together and take them home. We also grilled the Polish sandwiches, which made them so much better! Whenever I'm in So Cal (I live in Oregon now), I must have my fill of Wienerschnitzel!

We used to pop in at one on West Colfax on our return trip from Heritage Square amusement park in the foothills, in which the iconic building still stands AND still operates as a DW/ Hamburger Stand. We used to go to the one by our house on 52nd & Federal often, where they ran a DW/Hamburger Stand until the iconic building was razed in 2021 to make room for a Churches Chicken. Then there's one that is CURRENTLY being operated as a Der Wienerschnitzel/Hamburger Stand on Dartmouth & Broadway that was one of the original Der Weinerschitzel's to open in Denver. I don't know what part of Denver you grew up in, but I grew up on the North Side! Sounds like yous didn't get out enough to experience a Der Weinerschitzel in Denver in the 70's, zenbear!

Maybe 12-13 years ago, during a work shift in Paramount, I stopped at the DW on Rosecrans & Anderson... I mentioned it to my mom, and she told me that she and her friends used to eat there after school. Class of '65... great memories!

First time I saw a Wienerschnitzel was in 1987. I was visiting my Mom in Sacramento and I noticed the weird A frame setup as I drove by. They I noticed they sold hot dogs....and I had to try em. Chili Cheese Dog was my go to. Funny thing, they are all over the Dallas area now, and I've only been to their local place once in 27 years living in the area.
Now, I'll head to Portillo's if I want a really good hot dog. Cool video!

Really a shame how they've dwindled in Northern California! This was a treat we had every so often when my family had our couple of times a month "fast food Friday" dinners! I once had a "mustard dog" - probably one of the simplest things on the menu - but I swear it was the best! Something always appeals to me much more when you get hotdogs out as opposed to making them yourself! Haha!

When I worked at a car wash in Reseda, CA in 1975, my lunch break every day was at the original A-frame Der Weinerschnitzel next door. The price of their chili dogs matched my paltry paycheck, and they were good, too -- I'd sure like to have those cans of chili sauce shown in this video. I wonder if that stand survived the Northridge earthquake in the '90s. Last I heard of the Schnitz, they were sponsoring dachshund races at horse race tracks.

It's funny to hear about the kids and car culture, the cause of the drive through. In Phoenix, Az, cruising Central had been around for many years before Der Wienerschnitzel ... and their first store of course, was right on the corner on Central Ave ... in the middle of the cruising activity. So cruisers were there before Der Wienerschnitzel ... not because of it.

Before Glen Bell started selling tacos, he had a burger stand and served chili dogs.
Well, the sauce he was using for the hot dogs became the Taco Bell mild sauce.
So when Der Wienerschizel started, the sauce was again used for hot dogs.
