Thanks for sharing. I just made a spoon with a pocket knife and a Mora. It did the job but I went a bought a wood carving ket shortly after to make the spoon deeper. Good video. Making your own stuff is the fun part
Good video William, knife skills and using knives safely takes time and band aids. I learned a lot about holding a knife correctly by sharpening them. All I had was a 3 inch long 1 inch wide diamond stone. I cut myself several times mostly when trying to sharpen a knife to large for the stone. Eventually I slowed down and got better at it. Haven't been cut sharpening in a long while, knock on wood . I believe everyone should learn how to sharpen their blades. It will help hone their knife skills.
Good instructions W.C.. Good to know ! I honestly have never brought a spoon/bowl carving knife with me anywhere . And you really just need it to be close to a spoon. A lil carved spatula can be useful too. Thanks !
Nice work!! I really like that knife! Some things just require a small knife. Now I am gonna have to go try that for myself. What wood is that you are using?
Jerry Morris Have to have a knife with a slight belly. drop point blades work great. The woodlore style not so great. Not sure it was really old with no bark left on it but it was a hard wood of some type.
johnny30806 I wouldn't use high resinous wood such as conifer trees or holly trees either. Best stay with hardwoods such as oak, elm, birch, and so on. Appreciate the view and comment.
Great video, I often have problems grabbing the blade that has a sharp spine. It starts to cut in the flesh. Any tips to avoid this with a sharp spine? Cheers, Marc
Scouting Free Yep don't grab it there, LOL. Seriously though it is a problem. Most will ease the spine edges in the are they use for push cuts with a fine piece of Emory cloth and leave just a small portion sharp.
Outstanding, Do you realize you made that blip, blap, blam, Really fast and it's functional that's awesome, How long did it take you to know how to do that ? Thanx in advance.
Say Heah William, Yeah, I'm finding that a pointy slender blade is great for me to carve with especially a spoon. I bought a Weidmannshiel Solingen made Elliptical Canadian Boat Knife that I use to carve a spoon with, It's slender and short, on this side if 4" with a stag handle the stag is samber stag. From India I think. But thus little knife is pretty good style, Make yourself one and see, Small and Slender.
Patience and steady as you go. I was feeling relaxed watching this. Enjoyed it. Thanks. Be safe.
radicaljoe Thanks and you as well.
I hope you and your family are safe down there my friend!!! Love the vid and I need one of those knives!!!!

Say Heah William, You sure know your knives. I bet this knife would make a good knife for making a netting needle, I would like it for neck carry.,,.
Awesome William, what would be your favorite knife blade lenght to carve spoons with, and what knife and blade was the knife you were using.

unfortunally, there's glass and all kinds of junk everywhere and you can't get away from it, but you'd shocked how much really falls off planes.
keith moore Never heard that before about planes. Appreciate the view and comments.
Thought you were a southpaw?
donna donlea nope, right handed.
