Perfect! You must clean all the other fuel lines and especially the whole gas tank to avoid clogging the new pumps and the hoses. In these old vehicles that have been sitting for quite a long time it's better to replace all the rubber lines not only because of the age but also if the car hasn't been run for a long time, these tend to be brittle, dry rot and crack, and you don't want to be spilling fuel or any fluid as you drive. Great job, one thing less to do now.
Hey Mr. Mike I'm the same person who commented on the catalytic converter video for your s class 90s. And for my sec it's a fuel related issue, I hear the pumps turn on and see the fuel running, so I hope the filter is clogged!! Will update you soon
Great that she came alive. You also want to see if there's an inline strainer on the fuel line where connects to the fuel distributor. That's typical for Mercedes of this era
So pleased you got the 560 SEC running . They are classic & really beautiful. Love Mercedes . As i have said to Randy many times it’s a shame that i don’t live in Usa 🇺🇸 as i would have come & helped you xx
At the moment very nice, we have sunshine and beautiful scenery, look up Scotlands North Coast 500, that 560 would be idea for it power and comfort. In the winter it can be a little chilly -17c in 2010/11 but that was an exception to the norm. Not as windy as some parts of the US or as severe
A great day Mike Congrats That made me smile thinking of my W126 It’s amazing the crud that can come out of a fuel tank We have Malaysian built very small Ute that was run on ethanol based fuel by previous owner Wasn’t designed for it Had to replace fuel tank filters pump and injectors clean The fuel tank looked like it had been in the ocean for several years
I don't think these have one, they're usually seen on vehicles that have in-tank fuel pumps whereas this one has divorced fuel pumps. Cleaning the tank out would be a good idea, but if memory serves me right, getting the tank out of one of these is a very, very tough and awkward job. With it running apparently well now, I would suggest leaving it and changing out the fuel filter again in a couple of months. Most of the gunge looked like varnished fuel so the next couple of tanks of fuel should break a lot of it down and see it burned off in the engine. The small amount of scale isn't really an issue, it's common to see a lot more than that coming out of steel tanks in much newer vehicles...
Hey Mike Long time no see glad you are up and running up there in Tulsa. I wrote you a few months ago about trying to get you and Randy to come up to Spokane to shop their Copart and IAAI yards. Randy keeps talking about fixing cars for people that really need them and then give them deserving people . In your business you would fit in with the Spokane tv channels and it clear you would do well and turn some heads and influence the audiences and Randy could dazzle the "Gear Heads" and start your own empire I think you would do well even if it was a temp gig It is easy to tell you have stage presence and who knows maybe you would enjoy the media attention as well. Back in the day I did a kiddy program for all the grade grade schools in Ventura County doing a safety program called "Lynnee the talking police car I think it would be right up your alley! I have a Charger stored in Oklahoma City I need to go get it and I would like to meet you in person at some point. Take care
Mike your a diamond geezer well done for solving the fuel problem and not a bodge insight, your the man, looking forward to the next post and if possible and if you have time being a TV star 🌟and all that, just many a tadge longer 🤗🙏. Gary...... England 🇬🇧
Congratulations Mike!!! I’m very impressed! I know that it must feel really good, to have solved the issue and get her running again, like reviving the dead so to speak. 👏🏻👍🏻🎊🎉🏆🏅Joanne
Nice job, and the engine sounds so much sweeter now that it's getting the full load of fuel too. It might be worth considering changing all the flexible fuel lines for ethanol-compliant ones as most older vehicles don't have them and conventional flexible fuel lines can be attacked by ethanol which can cause leaks and can also result in bits of the inside of the lines getting drawn into the metering head and injectors causing running issues. Also make sure that all the hose clips on the fuel lines are the correct fuel injection items that provide clamping pressure all around the pipe and not just standard Jubilee-type items, as they can cause fuel leaks and having high pressure fuel spray coming out is a bad thing as it's easily ignited. That is, after all, exactly the way that internal combustion engines run...
I'd give that tank a good flush . Save filling your new filter with crap . When you cut open a filter take the paper element out cut a section 2in wide an say 15 or so pleats long put it in a vise an squeeze all the liquid out then open up an have a proper insight into whats in there Also clean mesh filter at fuel distributor Nice car mate your on a winner
@@MonkeyWrenchMike I am obsessed with so many models but the 560sec is maybe my favorite. I currently have a 95 s500, 96 s600, 86 420sel and the 85 190e. Next one to get is either a 560sec or a 500e
Love the coupé! But put out some more W140 content. You need to push me over the edge, I'm looking at a w140 s500 that needs some minor work. I'm very tempted too buy it it's either the s500 or a Saab 9-5 Aero wagon.

By the way, have you checked the fuel pump relay before deciding to replace the fuel pumps? Fuel pumps rarely go bad in W126 Mercs, typically it is a blown relay. (Big difference in costs!)
So the fuel goes through 2 pumps *before* the filter ? For my amateur brain, it would make sense to filter it first, and then have the pumps add the pressure.
Mike, did you hear me screaming at you to replace that hose? :D That little piece of hose had cracks plus it had a lot of crap. Did you spray brake or carb cleaner into any of the lines while you were there? Great video, nice work and a nice outcome.
Hey bro. Great job.......I recently added a video to my channel regarding a no start/no fuel issue on my 1989 560SEC. It will start with starting fluid only. I jumped the relay to provide 12v directly to the pumps. I hear the hum and I hear pressure or flow near the fuel rail. But when I attempt to start it......the pumps start to make crazy noisy sounds and the car will start and will immediately die. I don’t think it’s the relay because the no start issue exist with or without it. Do you think I need new pumps? Please help.

That's definitely one of the most satisfying jobs on an old Merc, and simple too. Getting the remains of the old one off, not so simple. God knows what they used to stick them on but they certainly never intended them to come off again...

There’s a screened filter at the bottom of the tank where gas empties to the pump. I’m going to do a video showing it sometime soon!
