    I have had around 200 vint blacks in the last 4 years. In that time I've sorted out all the gritty scratchy ones and I have around 97 very smooth vint blacks that I am never going to give away because it took me so long to get a hold of them.
    I've tried other linears in the last 4 years as well, but I still prefer the sound of my vint blacks over anything else. I think they are worth it if you can deal with sorting through the bad ones, but it's definitely a lot easier to find good linears now. I really like black inks as well.

    Thank you for explaining the history of the switch! I was confusing about the "retooled" term before watching this video.
    I saw that the hyperglide is applied on black, red, brown and sliver but why there is only videos about the black on youtube?

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least for me, the blacks were the only ones in stock! I also think probably because vint blacks are the most sought-after of the cherry Mx switches, so it lends itself the best to comparison?

    I have vintage MX Blacks from 1995, from a very used board. Cleaned in a Ultrasonic cleaner and generously lubed with 205g0.
    I wonder how do they compare to Hyperglides?

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the sound of it in this video...vintage Blacks sound better.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @frandor
    @frandor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i thought retooled were the much smoother ones that started coming out around 2017? and the scratchy ones were just a result of the original mx black tooling falling into disrepair

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for the comment and forgive me for my late reply! You are absolutely right in that "retooled" blacks are generally first believed to have come up in the switch discussion/universe around 2017!

  • @upgemynd
    @upgemynd ปีที่แล้ว

    Simply put: I strongly believe that if you're nostalgic, or if you have never tried VB and all the fuss people make about VB makes you curious, you should spend, at least once, your money to have (a) board(s) equipped with VB. If you're critical about the performance, having tried blind tests and different builds, VB is not worth at all and Hyperglide is the overall better choice.

  • @awry22

    There are at least 3 kinds of vints if i'm not wrong. Gen 1 and 2 you have to look at the texture of the housing to differentiate. Gen 3 has a bigger Cherry word.

  • @michaeljames1334

    really it is used vints that are the good ones. the ones that had all the years of use to break in. NOS while better than retooled are nowhere near as good as the ones that have been broken in and properly cleaned.

    • @rks5457
      @rks5457 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. The broken in factor makes a huge difference. I've seen some people mess this up by mass cleaning the used vint blacks and mixing up the parts and when you mismatch the stem and housing that have been grooved together over time it leads to every scratchy or gritty feeling.

  • @gianni6776
    @gianni6776 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This setup isn't good to underline the difference between the switches. The carpet and the microphone setup completely mute the sound of the switches, each difference gets canceled.

  • @anthonyparker7969

    Are those keycaps doubleshot? This is random but during the sound tests there was a sound i was unfamiliar with and ive deducted the culprit the be thin keycaps. Sorry for the randomness just curious. Great video either way man.

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha to be honest I’m really not sure! They are the stock XDA(I think?) keycaps that came with the kumo keyboard kit. They are definitely pretty thin… I’ve been thinking maybe I should use some GMK Or PBT keycaps for my sound tests for easier comparison to what’s most popular!

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The board in the video and in several others is the Thevankeyboards kumo (same as the TKC minivan) ! But I wouldn’t recommend because of the LED orientation :/ unfortunately the only staggered 40s that I know of that have south facing LED are pretty rare/niche and stupid expensive :/

Not quite as much as the vints but they are definitely not bad.
