Planting Gorgeous Climbers … Star Jasmine & Chilean Potato Tree 💚

  • In today’s video I am planting two beautiful new vines.
    First is a Tracelospermum Jasminoides, commonly known as ‘Star Jasmine’. This has very fragrant white flowers, borne in mid Summer, backed by the dark, shiny leaves of this slow-growing evergreen climber. It’s ideal for a sheltered, sunny wall in well-drained, fertile soil. Height and spread in 10 years is 20m x 2.5m (70ft x 8ft).
    Secondly, I have a Solanum Crispum ‘Glasnevin’, commonly known as the ‘Chilean Potato Tree’. This has rich purple-blue, orange-centred flowers from mid Summer to mid Autumn. It’s a vigorous scrambler with oval, mid green foliage. Suitable for south or west-facing, sunny sheltered spots, on well-drained soils. Height and spread in 10 years is 6m x 6m (20ft x 20ft). Prune in early spring as needed.
    Both these climbing vines have been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because they have proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and good performing plants. For more information on RHS Award of Garden Merit plants, visit:

Full of admiration for your perseverance & ingenuity - you always come up with a great PLAN B 👏🏼😊👍. Your garden looks lovely. Richard again has shown another ‘string to his bow’. It’s a lovely cool trunk isn’t it Topaz? 😎 very architectural, I do love it. Yes, I’d forgotten about that concrete and there’s more dotted around, especially in the corner with the green container as there used to be a pond there which was filled with and planted with a wonderful collection of weeds when we moved here 😂 still finding bits of it today. Don’t know what was at today’s end though. I’ll never know!! So you know the feeling then? 😊 hope you have a great week 💚🌺

    Hi Janette, your garden is looking so beautiful as always. I do love a Star Jasmine. It'll be beautiful on the trellises. It's so disappointing when you're just about to plant and you hit cement or rock as I did this afternoon but you've found the perfect solution. They're both going to be so pretty. I was so pleased to find a beautiful lime green Heuchera today. Always good to see Richard. He does make me smile and very interesting to see how the 'Enthusiastic Golfer' replaced the grip. Hope you both have a great week. Love Bron xx

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello my dear Bron, I’m excited to see what the Star Jasmine smells like 👍 I seem to have lots of pockets around where I hit concrete, especially in the green container corner. The previous owners had a big pond there, it was filled in and full of weeds by the time we moved here, but so much of it is still under the soil. Rich dug loads out about 10 years ago but there’s still some down there. Don’t know what that concrete today was originally there for though. Lime green Heuchera, that sounds lovely. Love those so much as you know. Yes, Rich is always polishing his golf trolley or something in his garage. Keeps him happy that’s for sure 😂 have a happy week 🌺💚

    You will love the star jasmine! And your placement will be perfect for it. I had one in my previous garden for many years and trained it on a 8x3 trellis panel. She did very well. Like any vine, you have to manage them and she took to a yearly spring pruning/shaping very well. The trick is to prune before the white sap rises. They produce a sticky white sap . The smell is out of this world. A lovely wafting scent that will make you happy!

Very pretty and I’m looking forward to seeing what the scent is like. I’ll see what happens with them both and keep my fingers crossed. I thought the golf grip process was rather interesting too, he’s always out there cleaning his trolley or polishing his balls 😂 or something 😂 Lotte just looks on, wishing we could go in and have a cuddle 🥰 hope you’re ok and having a lovely week so far 🌺💚

      😂😂Richard is one busy man🤪😂☺️, all jokes aside it was interesting to see how the grip is replaced. You need to add a Richard segment at the end of your videos when Richard is doing something in his man cave 👌. I always watch my husband when he’s building his models( Star Wars/ Star Trek fan boy) and it’s fun to watch. Jasmine smells Devine, right up there with gardenias. Do you have gardenias? I found one variety that lasts for more than 1 season in my zone 7b and it’s been two years and still waiting for it to flower but I read online that it’s normal for that. Any thoughts? It’s alive though I know that😂. Thank you my friend enjoy your week too😘and have fun in your garden🍀. You need to sell tshirts I would proudly wear one!

      @elizabethgreco-nieves well I could add a Richard segment but it would quite often be him watching Netflix 😂 but seriously I’m glad you enjoy seeing what he’s up to. I have no experience with gardenias unfortunately although I could probably grow them here. I’ve just looked them up on Google to see, says they’re highly toxic to dogs! But I actually don’t really worry that much about that because I think dogs tend to know which plants to avoid somehow. As for the T-shirts … hmm, I’ve never thought that anyone would want to buy a t-shirt from me? Maybe just you and I could wear them Elizabeth 😂😊 you’re such a great support my friend 💚🌺

    Hi Janette, Everything in your garden is doing so well. I am sure you'll enjoy your new climbers. I was just working in my garden and had to do some rethinking and readjusting when planting some of my seedlings because of cement footings against one of my walls. It can be annoying, but it worked out. I have star jasmine planted against my wall. They are mature, maybe 18 years old. I have a completely green wall, and they are all full of buds. It's going to smell devine. I keep mine at about 9 ft high. You're going to love the scent! I really like the chair at an angle. Lottie is so cute! Hope Richard can get out to play golf soon!

I hope mine does well, I’m so looking forward to the scent. Yes, isn’t it annoying when you have an idea for a plant in an exact spot, only to find you’d forgotten about the concrete 😂 I have a load more in the other corner where the green container is, used to be a pond there way before we moved in. Great additions, Jeanette. I think though that potato is going to outgrow that spot. You may have to remove it. I would suggest the black eyed Susan vine. It will look good on your small obelisk. I have not found it grows very vigorously but has creamy or yellow small flowers. It’s available in the US. It’s an annual. I think you can put that next to your seat and move the bigger obelisk with the potato vine somewhere else.

      Oh it’s very annoying isn’t it Pauline, there’s many a time when I want to plant something in an exact spot and have forgotten about the concrete! There is a lot in the corner with the green container. Rich dug loads out about 10 years ago for me but still a lot left, there used to be a pond there and when we moved in it had been filled in and they made it into a raised bed but by the time we arrived it was falling apart and filled with weeds so we took it down. With regard to Rich re-gripping his clubs, I’m the same as you - have no interest whatsoever in playing but I did find that process rather interesting to watch ☺️ hope you’re ok and have a great week 🌺💚

    Hi Jeannette. Hazel here from Gortnalee Gardens! I have had both those climbers in my garden and I have had mixed experiences you might like to hear? The Potato Vine will be really easy to keep in the shape you want it by tying in bits or cutting it to shape in late summer/early autumn when the flowers have gone. Its a really pretty flower but does lose all its leaves in winter. The Star Jasmine is more tricky. Where you have it looks perfect but be aware it isn't always fully hardy for our climate so I would be inclined to put a good mulch on it coming up to late autumn to be on the safe side. The locations you have chosen are perfect for both plants and you have arranged them beautifully! Hopefully we will see some flowers on them this summer. I love the new arrangement of that seat too, You are a very creative gardener!

      Hello Hazel and thank you so much for all these really great tips because as you know I’ve never had either before. I will heed your good advice as best I can and pray for the best. Do I have to cut the Potato Vine down to the ground in the winter, or keep it as it is (apart from cutting to shape)? I’ll bear in mind mulching the Star Jasmine too. Thanks ever so much for all your help ☺️ have a great week 💚🌺

      Hi Jeannette. I never cut mine to the ground. I just tidy it up a bit and since my garden is very windy I tie in the long pieces so they won't get broken. Maybe it might be a good idea to cut any long strands by half the first year and see will that encourage it to make more branches!

    Sometimes a plant in a nursery pot is so rooted in the pot that it is impossible to get it out. My solution is to take a strong cutter and use it to cut down the pot and pull it apart to release the plant.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there, thanks for watching! I’m assuming you mean the olive tree? That wasn’t in its nursery pot though, it’s a bottomless pot I’d planted it in when I bought it I think 2 years ago, so the roots can grow down into the ground. I got the bottomless pot idea from Bunny Guinness, the garden designer, and all the pots in my borders are bottomless (apart from the big green one in the corner). So that’s why I wasn’t too worried that it had to stay in there. Hope you’re having a great week so far 🌺💚

It has lovely white flowers in June. I did buy actual rose fertiliser last year and did them all for the first time then, but I haven’t done anything this year yet, I should do that. My other roses along the long border didn’t do very well at all last year, but I’m hoping that’s because I moved them all to their new spots so they had a bit of a shock. Fingers crossed they’ll be better this year. Hope you have a great week 🌺💚

I could stand very straight towards the back where the roof slopes up but I have shelves along the back in mine. You couldn’t swing a cat in here though 😂 it’s more a large coldframe than a proper greenhouse but it’s very decorative and you can definitely put plants in and do things like hardening off seedlings and sowing seeds with heat mats (I have electric points in mine and a little light). I chose it because I just don’t have any space anywhere for anything bigger. I hope that helps you decide 🌺💚

But you could try and google “garden illusion gate” and different sites might come up. I’ve had it for over 10 years and it’s still looking good. It’s not actually a mirror, it’s an acrylic sheet.
      Good luck! 🩷💚
