    A game with a big memory leak problem like this should really not be listed as verified. Anyway, thank you so much for all of your work! You are amazing dude.

    I’m new to PC gaming and the steam deck is my first real gaming PC type device. I’m just now learning about God of War’s problems on the steam deck and this memory leak sounds concerning to me. Though I haven’t experienced any major issues yet with the game, I’m aware that many people are saying that the game crashes with inevitable memory leaks. What exactly is a memory leak? And does it damage the device internally in any way?
    This video is great by the way! Someone recommended this video to me so I can get this game running well. When I have time, I’ll try these settings out

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for watching!
      A "memory leak" is when a program starts using some memory and then doesn't "release" it when it's no longer needed. Eventually all your memory gets full and it can cause crashes, but it won't harm the device in any way. It can also cause performance issues, because the more "full" the memory is, the harder it is for the program to request new memory.
      Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have, or join the Discord if you're interested!

    Hey man I've been watching since very early on and I just wanna tell you to keep at it, you're doing genuinely great work and I honestly see a very well deserved successful channel coming from this if you keep at it. A question though, because I might be incorrect but i was always under the impression that anisotropic filtering had negligible performance detriment even when maxed to x16 and on a lot of steam deck related videos I see people opting for x2 or x4, although in my opinion the cost savings are so negligible its just as well to have the increased fidelity at all times. Let me know your thoughts on if I'm incorrect I'd love to learn more

      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for being an avid supporter of the channel ❤️
      Anistropic filtering cranked to max on a normal GPU is "free", but it does take some VRAM. That VRAM distinction is what makes lower values perform marginally better, particularly in lows, on the Steam Deck.
      Speaking directly to God of War, I noticed that some lag spikes were up to 14% worse with anistropic filtering maxed out, which I suspect is due to swapping assets out more often.
      Thank you again for watching everything, and I hope this helps!

    • @svrvegasblackops
      @svrvegasblackops ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @CryoByte33 hey I was doing some fiddling with Aniso just last night on RDR too and actually got a huge stability increase when playing RDR2 at 4x rather than me just habitually setting it to 16. I was playing through the beginning and even with the snow which tends to be a pretty stressful point graphically I was able to maintain a locked 45fps/45Hz refresh rate whereas I was teetering on 37-40 with Aniso set to max so being able to squeeze some last extra frames for stability was a huge surprise! And on such a small screen I guess it was the right call because my blind ass could not tell a single difference in visual fidelity at 4x haha thanks so much for the new info and I'll be sure to be fiddling around with this setting in the future more as a result. Thanks Kyle have a happy holidays!

      @@cryobyte33 I don't have the same metrics as you, but I'm running it at 30fps. Before huge pages, it would go under 30 in busy areas and now it's pretty much locked at 30. Lowest I've seen it go is 29fps. I did notice that after a reboot, huge pages needs to be enabled again. Not sure if that's just me, but I find myself having to also toggle my CPU/GPU powertools settings as well.

      @@linklooklisten Someone else reported that HugePages were getting disabled after reboot, but I have something cooking up for that. In the meantime you'll have to re-enable that.
      As for PowerTools, there's a persistence option at the bottom of the panel that will set the changes per-game and also persist reboots. The wording is very confusing but that's what it does 😅

    I hope more people catch on to using FSR to boost frames. I recommend choosing a resolution lower than 1280x800 native and then using FSR at 1-4
    I’m currently playing GTA at 110-120 fps on high. I haven’t had any issues with God of War where I’m running just below native on High getting anywhere from 40-55 frames.

    • @cryobyte33

      I've tested FSR in all of my videos, and most of my "smooth" and "battery saver" presets use them. God of War's FSR tends to be VERY messy when moving, so I don't recommend it for my "prettier" settings.

    I'm very surprised by your video, since I never encounter any crashing problems, even using ultra settings.....
    I used the DXVK-ASYNC trick but as you said the perfs were the same...so I stay with this simple settings wich is working for me 100% of the play time:
    Graphics on standard, screen at 720p, no vsync, no fsr.
    In steam is menu: set to 30fps, and no tdp limiter...
    Just simply doing this I get a 30fps lock all the time, no heat on the SoC and no fan noise problems...

    And that's all for me ;)!

      It seems like some people can play just fine, and many can't for some reason. ProtonDB has dozens of people reporting crashes, and I had over 50 requests for God of War, most of them citing the constant crashing, so I wasn't surprised when I had them too.
      After making the video, 3 people, yourself included, said they hadn't had any crashing issues, but I'm not sure why there's a discrepancy at all, but as long as you can play the game how you want to I'm happy 🙂

    Was waiting for this. One thing about the memory leak. On Desktop PC its different story, GoW runs butter smoooth. So this looks like some mischief of Proton maybe? (Just guessing).

    As well another top notch video!

    • @cryobyte33

      Welcome back to the channel!
      I think that they use DX11 in an odd way, relying on Windows' GC (garbage collection) to take care of the memory for them, rather than actually programming the game to do it manually. I've heard that the PS4, where these games were originally published, automatically does GC for you and it's slightly more efficient that way.
      Unfortunately, if your PC isn't a very specific spec or you're running through Proton then the GC doesn't work properly and it basically loads the entire game into memory.
      I have a lot of theories and musings on it, better served in a Discord or dedicated video, but in general I think that they're a bit sloppy as ports go 😅
      As for which I think is the better port, I'd say Horizon, even with the dips we could usually get a solid lock and it didn't light the CPU on fire in the same way, despite having more complex AI.
      As always, thank you so much for being a longtime viewer, and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! 😁

    Hello, I have a question to ask
    (I'm not really tech savvy so forgive me if I get anything wrong)
    In most of your deep dive videos, I noticed that putting a 30 fps cap would help flatten the frametime graph
    Is it safe to assume that most games would have a similar flat line if you cap the game at 30fps due to the extra breathing room for frame pacing?
    As always, thanks for the excellent content!

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No judgement here, I'm here to help!
      That's correct. The GPU has a certain amount of "work units" or "operations per second", let's say. Limiting frames lets the GPU start working on the next frame a tiny bit earlier, so the frames get out right on time rather than "as soon as the GPU can get it done".
      Overall, it maintains a much more solid experience. The human mind is better at dealing with an exact interval to react, rather than a fluctuating one, so limiting frames really helps there.
      Hopefully this helps, thank you for watching!

    Recently found your channel and love the videos you're making. Are you doing most of your testing off the NVME? I'm curious if you've seen any differences with some of these harder to run games loading from the SD card.

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!
      Before testing each game I check if the SD card makes any difference to gameplay, but the only difference that I've noticed during my deep dives is loading times.
      Having a game installed to SSD tends to speed up game boots and loading by between 5-20%, depending on the game, but the performance boost from having the files on the SSD is cancelled out by swapping that happens during those situations.
      That said, my SD card is middle-of-the-road, so results might be different on worse, or better, microSDs and I haven't had the opportunity to test that yet 🙂
      Hopefully this helps!

    Thank you so much for covering this! People ask about this one so much on reddit so I'm sure that the community will be ecstatic. When I played through it about a month ago, I think I landed somewhere around your prettiest settings recommendations with a locked 30 and it rarely dipped to 28/29 for a very few instances throughout the game. Additionally, I think that you could also keep those same settings, but drop the res to 720p and lock the refresh rate to 40hz and have a similar experience as above at 40fps with rare dips to 38/39, although I hadn't tested that one as thoroughly as the 30 option, if you wanted to keep the "prettiness". I wanted to bring that option up in the event that someone preferred it for whatever reason, but you unfortunately wouldn't be running at native res anymore so there is a trade off. Not saying that it's better than your recommendation by any means, just offering additional insight, hope that's okay.
    I appreciate all of your hard work and the education that you provide so much! You're awesome. I look forward to the next one as I do every week! Waiting on the edge of my seat for The Witcher 3 update video lol

      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course that's okay, thank you for the insight! I did test lowering to 720p and it did help a bit, but the main bottleneck being the CPU really hurts our options, since a lot of the volumetric effects and AI are the same regardless of resolution 😞
      Thank you for continuing to be a major supporter of the channel, I always look forward to hearing your thoughts and I hope to see you around for a while more.

    That's... Bizzare.
    I mean, I know I'm an old school player and I'm content playing a game at 30fps with some dips here and there, but in my 18 hours with this game I played so far with a generally stable 30fps setting everything to Original, no fsr, native resolution and 100% render scale with a 10 Watts tdp. It generally stays at around 16-17Watts of power consumption with roughly two hours and a quarter of playtime. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    And it only crashed once so far, requiring me to force restart the machine.

    One last thing. We need to talk about people's reviews on protondb. Im tired of seeing verified or platinum game only for the review to say 10/10 all fine and then, just in passing, mention that it hard crashes all the time. Like its a minor thing. Marvel Midnight Sun HARD crashes your deck after every mission and people had raised its rating to PLATINUM by just giving it thumbs up and mentioning the consistent unavoidable crashing as if it was nothing. Others dont mention it at all so i guess they are only doing quick benchmarks and not actually playing the games which can give them the wrong impression

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, I never actually listen to the ratings because of this, I always go and read the reviews themselves. I'm hoping that eventually I'll have reviewed enough games that people can use my videos as a compatibility score, but that's a long time away 😅

      @@cryobyte33 i dont trust the verification anymore. Too many people are giving games ratings based on a quick glance instead of long sessions. Conversely some games have bad ratings because they require fixes and people dont read how to apply them (Atelier games require a dll to work with proton or they are a slideshow, i dont know why GE doesnt incorporate that fix but here we are) or are old games which requiere fixing on pc as well. I wish steam had a sort of workshop for community fixes or configs where we could apply community patches directly from steam like we do control mappings.

    DO NOT use ingame fps limiter, i find it cause pretty bad frame pacing issue

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a tradeoff here. The in-game limiter has worse frame pacing, but very little input latency. Using the overlay limiter has really good pacing, but very high latency.
      Which one I recommend depends on the game, and I found that having higher input lag with the combat in God of War was a death sentence, whereas the frame pacing hit wasn't as detrimental.
      That said, if you prefer one over another then definitely choose the other, thank you for watching!

    Do you think steamos can handle the resolution of a switch oled? The color representation on the stock steam deck screen sucks

    • @cryobyte33
      @cryobyte33  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Steam Deck's resolution is actually higher than the switch OLED, but OLED panels have different heat and voltage properties, so a simple screen swap probably isn't possible.
      That said, check out the VibrantDeck decky plugin. It makes the colors MUCH better, and is a game-changer.
      Thank you for watching!
