The Bokeh Lens You DESERVE, But NOT THE ONE You NEED Right Now. Olympus 75mm 1.8

  • Why is the Olympus 75mm 1.8 Batman?? And why doesn’t it have more reviews on TH-cam?? And why are all it’s reviews so positive? Let’s have a look..
    ***Turns out the 15mm 1.7 has a score of 15P--Mpix which matches the 75mm 1.8! My bad! As far as I know this is still the only other lens that matches that score!

    Great video Kim. I completely agree with you man as this lens make me smile every time too! I got into micro four thirds with Olympus back in 2015 and dreamed about owning the 75mm 1.8 some day. But the lens was just a bit too far out of my budget and I resigned myself to knowing that I'd have to wait perhaps another 2 or so years before it was within my grasp. Fast forward to 2019 just 10 days before I was schedule to depart for a 1 year round the world trip. I got incredibly lucky and found a used but mint 75mm in Black for about $250 USD and couldn't believe my luck.
    Took it to Europe with me and got some incredible portraits with it and boy does it still make me happy when I get a chance to use it. The build, the sharpness and the bokeh make this probably one of the most low key lesser known gems of micro four thirds lenses!

      JB's Travels great to hear it man it's still one of my go to's in the system and I think because of its price, not a well known commodity!

      JB's Travels hey man my paid work is normally for video and this is the lens I use pretty much when I want to throw the background out lol. For pictures I just use it for fun but here's one of them. instagram.com/p/B-UsjGJBM2p/?igshid=mqonorezimgv

    I own this lens and now my 45mm 1.8 never gets used. The 75mm is that good. I use it for headshots and full length and 3/4 shots when shooting outdoors. Take a model to the beach you will love this lens. Very shallow depth of field with creamy bokeh. Buy it.

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      terry breedlove I agree.. my 42.5mm 1.7 still has its place, but when I need just that separation or INCREDIBLE sharpness, the 75mm comes out!

    I have this lens and love it. The bonus is, I shoot Olympus, so the body is stabilized. This is my 'secret weapon' for portraits. ;)

  • @marc6652

    Certainly the best choice when you want a compact 150mm equivalent. Perfect when you want to shoot from a certain distance, discreetly, for a wedding evening or even street photography.
    For portraits, it gives you roughly F4 equivalent in termes of depth of field, witch is probably the best choice to have both eyes in focus every time. And indeed, it's a sharp lens.

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah compared to ff lenses this isn't going to blow anyone away, but for m43?? some of my favorite portrait shots are done with this just because the 150mm equivalent gives such a different look to your everyday 50mm and 85mm equivalents with the background just looming over the subject! the bokeh's quite nice too!

    A lot, but they're worth it 👌🏻 Nice job as always my dude! Just wondering, what are your thoughts about a speed booster on MFT? I work with a company that uses a GH5, a metabones speed booster, and Rokinon cine, and Sigma primes, and it's 💲, just wondering my dude, thanks!

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lol thanks man....
      ok so if you work large scale, i'd go that route too... here's why i don't (yet):
      1. Cost- Like you said, it's expensive!! But I know many people say adapting is cheaper, and that can be true, but that's just about the lenses itself. The speedbooster itself costs quite a lot (although viltrox seems promising) and what happens if you want to have multiple camera bodies, you're gonna need more speed boosters... And going bigger usually means getting called out for filming without permits, to getting bigger gimbals... be prepared to lose the 'small time film maker/hobbyist' tag quickly. Sometimes it's good for attracting some clients by 'looking pro', but in my experience, you don't want those clients- take the ones that saw your work and loved it regardless of your equipment.
      2. Reliability- So a Brandon Li, the guy who made Hong Kong Strong short film (check it out if you haven't seen it) mentioned in a q and a how he adapted Canon glass to his Sony camera using a metabones adapter.. and it would crap out on him it's happened on paid shoots. To be fair, he just turned it on and off a bunch of times until it started working, and it could just be his copy. He basically said that native glass just usually works better, that's just what the camera was designed for etc etc. Regardless of his opinion, as a small time film maker, I'm not spending $600+ on something that might crap out on me on a shoot. I have 3 critical lenses in my bag, a 17mm 1.8, the 25mm 1.7, and the 42.5mm 1.7 that cost maybe $1,000 altogether. If any 1 of them breaks, I can still confidently finish a shoot with the other 2 lenses. With a metabones and say a sigma 18-35, that's about $1,400, without a backup. Never cover an event without a backup.
      3. Weight- Even with my 3 primes and a kit lens, that weight put together is probably comparable to just the sigma 18-35 and a speedbooster. The benefit is that when I'm shooting, I only need to carry a fraction of that weight, and the rest stays in my bag. It's fine if you can handle the weight or are on tripods most of the time, but a lot of my stuff is handheld and on gimbals. What can I say, I guess I'm lazy lol.. Also, I hate being tired during a shoot, I lose focus, I don't see the shots etc etc and this is probably the more important reason.
      Anyway I hope that answers your question! What kind of company do you work for man? It sounds like a pretty serious operation......

    • @RedbeardComms
      @RedbeardComms 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kim Cruz They work mostly corporate and wedding gigs, they're named Shadow Shine Pictures, you should check us out! That makes a lot of sense, I get that man, I was thinking of getting a viltrox possibly, because I already have existing Canon glass lol

      Kim Cruz Also, thanks for all of the tips, you're super helpful!!!

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a problem and if you already have glass, it's probably worth adapting and i hear canon glass is really good! i checked you guys out and i love the color! are you guys recording in 10-bit or 8-bit? I don't do much color grading myself outside of basic exposure and saturation... what's your experience been like? Do you have to shoot 10-bit to color grade?

    75mm vs Sigma 56mm ?

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally never tried the sigma but I’ve seen comparisons online- gotta go with the sigma for its sharpness! But if you need a longer prime I wouldn’t mind the Olympus but pick it up second hand!

      @@KimCruz1 Literally everything you said in the video is correct! 100%! Its build, its sharpness and overall feel of the lens. The feeling of holding it in my palm alone worths $500 LOL (the price I paid for it).
      I took it out for some street shots today (which is not what it's ideal for) and OHMAHGAD, decided to keep it.
      You were right about how I don't need this lens but I deserve it. And hell yea I know I do. So I know I won't use it as much as my other lenses, I would still keep it and work my ass extra to pay it off.

    I'm not a photographer but I just wanna say I hate bokeh or any form of blurring. It's distracting and make sthe overall image look far worse. Why the obsession with isolating a small section that we "look" at. What if I like looking at the background and feel the whole picture is important to the overall feeling I get from viewing the image?
    My S20 phone recently updated and they added some type of background blur when pulling down the "shutter" on the phone. I see this in games as well with other type of blurring like motion blur as well.
    I don't know where this phenomenon started but fuck blur seriously
