    The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 for Micro Four Thirds - Worth every penny!
    I'm Darren Miles of Darren Miles Photography down here in beautiful, sunny Naples, FL. In my hand is The Amazing Olympus 75mm f/1.8 for the Micro 4/3rds System. Rarely does a lens get heaped with the kind of superlatives that have been hoisted on this piece of glass. Does it live up to the extraordinary hype? Let's find out...
    Olympus has been on a bit of a role lately, in particular with their camera bodies - the PEN series and the much acclaimed OM-D series. Moreover, they've done a great job with the glass to accompany the cameras. Specifically, Olympus has produced some great primes - the 12 f/2, the new 17 f/1.8, the 45 f/1.8, the 60mm Macro and the king pin of the lot, the 75mm f/1.8. I'd been doing some research on this lens and there really hasn't been as many video reviews as you might expect from something that has been so highly acclaimed.So let's get right to it;
    LET'S START WITH BUILD QUALITY: All metal construction, smooth, well damped focus ring. There are 10 elements in 9 groups, the weight comes in at just under 11 ounces. Proportionately speaking, this is a pretty intimidating lens, it looks something like the 85L mounted on a Rebel! There is however, no distance meter and it's important to note, the lens is NOT weather sealed, which admittedly is disappointing given the price point of the lens - that aside, all in, its still a really solid effort - 9/10
    Next up is the FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: This is the latest in a line of MSC lenses from Olympus - (MSC stands for Movie and Still Compatible) That said, we found the focus to be Insanely quick (on the order of Canon's USM), and the focus was accurate MOST of the time. The OM-D its mated to, doesn't always have the most accurate focus, regardless of lens. The focus squares tend to find something, but it may be something just to the left or the right or just behind the target. All in though, like we said its really quick, and mostly accurate - 8.5/10
    OPTICAL QUALITY: Wow. Where do I begin? Amazing? Breathtaking? Unbelievable? The superlatives keep getting justifiably heaped onto this lens, and they're all accurate. I simply cannot believe the detail I pull at 100% and 200% crops. Its amazing.... 10/10
    QUALITY OF RESULTS: 10/10 - I've never used a sharper lens, and that includes the likes of the Canon 85L, 135L and 70-200 f/4 IS. All are amazing, but the Olympus rises above them all. But here, have a look at these samples for yourself.... Freeze Frame 10/10!
    VALUE: 8/10 - Now, if there's a fly in the proverbial ointment with the 75, its the price. Let's be honest at $899 its steep for a prime, never mind a prime on an M/43 camera. Moreover, this lens is the Full Frame equivalent of 150mm filed of view making the usefulness of this lens somewhat limiting. If there's a dearth of reviews out there, its because no one can afford one. That said, all is forgiven when you see the results. I can see the price point driving people away, but if you're in the market for making a switch from a full sized DSLRs, this lens is a must.
    CONCLUSION: It's so rare these days for anything to ever live up to the hype, hence my natural skepticism when I heard the borderline gushing about the virtues of this lens... I've heard it all before - or so I thought - I'm a Canon shooter and I heard all about the the Canon 135 or 85L or the 70-200 Mark ii - and those lenses are great.... But in my opinion, this Olympus is at least as good and in most situations, rises above them all. I've been shooting professionally for about 7 years now, and this is hands down the sharpest lens I've ever shot with and that includes some pretty sharp lenses. I would put this up against the leica's any day - really, its that good. Olympus has been on a role, specifically with their relatively new OM-D E-M5 and the lenses that accompany it.This camera and this lens have made me a believer in the micro 4/3rds system. The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 earns a 46/50 or our coveted "Highly Recommended" rating. This is a really nice piece of glass :-)This is Darren Miles of Darren Miles Photography of Naples, FL and I thank you for watching! Until the next time, happy shooting!
    BUILD QUALITY: 9/10
    FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: 8.5/10
    OPTICAL QUALITY: 10/10
    QUALITY OF RESULTS: 10/10
    VALUE: 8/10
    OVERALL: 45.5/50 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

    I shot with this lens all last week on the PEN-F and it blows my Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II on a 5D Mark III out of the water in regards to focusing accuracy and sharpness!

    Thank yo so much for the kind words. I'm in the midst of reviewing the 45mm f/1.8 for Olympus - another gem of a lens. Haven't thought about "how to" videos yet, but I appreciate the feedback and will look into it!

  • @DarrenMiles
    @DarrenMiles  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Andrew, thanks for your comment. Reasonably well! If you're referring to its ability to focus - that may be more of a function of the camera body you have it attached to, with the OM-D, the 75 performs very well in low light.

  • @DarrenMiles
    @DarrenMiles  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ratna, This was my first "video" review and you're right I didn't address the video function. It is an "MSC - Movie/Still Compatible" lens, meaning it will focus quickly and silently in video. I've found the OM-D on the whole is "adequate" for video, it's a bit jumpy - regardless of the lens - especially when panning. On a video M43 SLR (like the Pany GH3) I would bet an optic like this one would SHINE!

      Dee Nugent I had the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 and it was great. But when I bought the Olympus 48mm f1.8 I felt it was plenty for me doing portraits, I miss my Panasonic lenses after I switched over to night time. The whole camera and lens was so late compared to my D 800. That’s a pretty good deal for $900 of those lenses.

    Solution to the value problem: Buy the oly portrait kit instead, comes with the 45mm 1.8, 75mm 1.8, lens hoods and lens cases, all for $999, sometimes goes on sale for $899 (like recently on Black Friday and the week following.)

Don't think I could ever justify buying it as I don't take portraits v often but many one day I can convince myself I need it for other possible uses. Either way it looks a beautifully designed lens for any owner to treasure.

    Just bought this lens for my PEN F. It is my tight in portrait lens. Close to what I used to shoot with my 135mm on my nikon f3. Weather sealing not an issue because I don't shoot portraits in the rain. :)

    I almost picked up a 40-150 2.8 Pro on Offerup for my Pen F but it just wasn't sharp across the aperture range. I think it was a bad copy. Discovered this gem via this video and managed to find a mint black copy on FM with the OEM hood, original caps and a nice b+w uv haze MRC nano filter for $375 shipped! Thing is pretty sharp wide-open, even sharper between 2-2.8 and even sharper when stepped down further at 5.6. I've got a great street shooting and portrait lens all in one. Very happy with it.

    I haven't noticed the robotic noise in the 75. I'll check out the Voigtlander, but at f/0.95 I'd be a bit concerned about the focus too - especially manual. It's also $999 - which is a bit much for a manual focus lens on M43. But, I understand its amazing.
    Pretty sure the next M43 lens I'll be doing will either be the Pany 7-14 or the 25.

    Great video !! I'm looking for a lens for my GH5, I work as a portrait photographer so I was thinking about this one, but I also work in FilmMaking so I was wondering if this one is also good for quality short films and all that... I'm a bit worried about the physical distance you have to take with the person you are filming or taking pictures of (I've heard 3meters, it seems a lot to me)... Thank you so much for your advice!! and thanks again for your reviews they are the best on youtube ! just curious but have you ditched ur dslr gear for mft ? because after the pana 7-14 i couldn't justify funding two systems especially when wide angle and landscape was the only redeeming factor (FOR ME)to keep the ff Nikon especially because iq in some shots is quite close to my old d3 i guess the people doing sport shooting would keep their dslrs but soon with a fast super telephoto prime from oly to follow for mft next year :\

    i had the 45 and it was an amazing lens,but last December i got the voigtlander 25mm f.95 and the build quality , subject isolation and the bokeh on that is something else (but it is manual so focusing is sometimes not spot on but its my in-aptitude and not the lens to blame)since then i have sold the 45, as i used to use the 45 exclusively for portraits and im looking at either the oly 75 or the voigt 42.5 . i also keep hearing of a robotic noise from the oly 75 f1.8 in low light is it true ?

    I picked up a near new one in the box with the metal hood in black to match my e-m1 for $600 australian. That's about $440USD, that's a hell of a lot of lens for that money. I've owned a load of high grade olympus lenses (14-54mm, 12-60mm, 11-22mm, 50-200mm, 12-40mm) and I'm looking forward to this, something tells me this is going to blow all those zooms out of the window. I'm thinking I might be able to let go of some of my om and pen-f prime glass.
    I'm counting the minutes until it arrives. Got a very cheap 17mm f1.8 as well but I'm not quite as excited, thinking I should have gone for the 12 to try some astro work.

    thats really nice about the 75 manual is nice but not always practical and ive been leaning toward the 75 anyway .I have the pany 7-14 and its quite nice except for (the filter bit and f4 for interior shots wish it was f2.8 )haven't had the chance to try the 9-18 oly which i guess is the only current competitor . but if u go by the rumours though i hear there's a pro wide angle coming next year from oly in the 7-14 range,haven't tried the panaleica 25 either but i hear good things about it ..

    I LOVE this lens but I have found that the focus speed varies tremendously based on the lighting conditions. In low light, it's really quite slow. It might be helpful if your reviews mentioned focus speed not simply outside on a bright, sunny day.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comments.
      I've found that it tends to hunt a lot less in low light with the newer bodies like the OMD EM1 and the GH4 - that said, nearly every lens struggles to focus in low light on the earlier M43 bodies. Are you experiencing slow focus on an EM1 or GH4?
      In my later reviews (the 75 was my first, I was a "virgin" at the time :-)) I make it a point to mention low light issues with focus if they exist.

      yes, that's what I mean :)
      When in portrait, you can of course get a little closer with a head/shoulder shot. That's why it's about 2,4m in portrait.
      When in "landscape", you need a distance of about 3m to have both head and shoulder in the frame.

    It is as sharp as everyone says it is, I have been an Olympus user since the OM1 came out in the mid seventies. From time to time Olympus will do something that defies explanation, no weather sealing, no lens hood in a lens this expensive what were they thinking? I purchased mine used in excellent shape with the Oly hood, if you can get one don't pass on it.

    Hi Darren; I come from a Nikon D 600 but I am leaning toward Olympus EM1 or EM 5 Mark II. Which prime lenses would you recommend for street shooting, landscapes. Also if you can help me which OM camera would you suggest. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Massoud,
      Either would be great, from a sheer shooting standpoint, I prefer the EM-1, but I really like the feature set of the EM-5 Mark ii - as in some ways it's more advanced than the EM-1.
      For street photography - the 45 f/1.8 or the 75 f/1.8 are JUST AWESOME - the 75 is one of the best lenses on any system, but remember it's a 150mm FF field of view equivalent.
      For landscapes, I would look to the Olympus 9-18 or the Panasonic 7-14, or I might wait for the Olympus 7-14 f/2.8 PRO which will come out later this year.
      Hope that helps!!
      Darren

      Darren Miles Thank you Darren for your feedback. I will take your advice and wait for 7-14 f/2.8 pro. Again Thank you for eye opening reviews.

      +Massoud Zamani I would recommend the excellent all-round zoom Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro.
      It's excellent for both landscape and street photography. It's the perfect "carry everywhere" lens. Really.
      If you want a prime, for street shooting, I would recommend the 17mm 1.8 or the 25mm 1.8
      I think the 45mm or especially the 75mm are too much in the tele range for street shooting.
      Depends on your style of course.

    What do you say at 4:53? "The lens does not come with a lens"?? Did you mean hood?

      Duh.... How'd I miss that? Comes without a lens hood. Nice catch.

    what did you use to video this review? canon?

      Almost always shoot with a 5D3 and the 70-200mm mark ii. Although lately, I've been shooting with the GH4 and the 75 f/1.8....

      Darren Miles Since you have GH4, can you now say whether the focus issue is the Olly OMD, like you thought, or the lens?

      Believe it or not that was the very first video I ever shot for TH-cam… I’m about 95% sure that I shot it with the Panasonic GH4… But honestly, I don’t remember.

    Why do you say this is expensive but compare its quality to L lenses? Isn't it way cheaper than just about all L lenses?

    • @DarrenMiles
      @DarrenMiles  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the time of this review (1 year ago), $899, WAS an expensive price for an M43 lens, however many lenses have since leapfrogged the price of the 75 and these days it's looking like a better value than at the time I did the review. True it is more economical than L glass, but it's still on the high for M43....

    I have this lens and a Olympus OMD E-M5 Mark 1. I had face detection and it still missed focus on some people at f1.8 and if their head was turned you really are taking a chance from the chest up for a portrait. From the waste up to the head your more in the safe zone at f1.8. I feel safe at f2.5mm and f2.8mm with this lens.
