the vet gets more respect bcuz a lot of people can actually respect someone that has served and protected our country... the fact is most of the other people in there are junkies that haven’t served so that is why people are more biased towards the vet...

I have to agree with someone else in the comment section, who brung to my attention a Vet with a disability sustained while in service especially the loss of limbs would recieve over 2600 a month and could easily recieve other benefits. I am a former Marine Im 80% disabled (finesse) and I receive 1667 monthly. Hmmm seems fishy just a little bit. A junkie will say anything for a pity party that will result in him getting his way!
You also have to remember that they commented that everyone is on some drug addiction. And the vet even acknowledged that the reason he’s in this situation and the way his relationship with his family is they way it is was his fault. Even his best friend fessed up to all of this stemming from their addiction. So even if he is getting money, you have to think about the possibility that it may be being spent on drugs. And even if it’s not, it’s possible it’s going towards invisible expenses we can’t see (if you want to be optimistic) such as check ups or visits concerning his health as a simple urgent care without insurance can easily stack up especially if you want preventative care. The one I work it to be seen alone is 120. Including being treated for the ONE issue. I’ve seen medication that’s supposed to be “affordable” wound up being $1000 alone.
He also mentioned that he’s looking out for a few people, so it possible he’s not using what he does earn for just himself.
This is just me playing devils advocate though. I don’t know their life. But it’s something to think about.

The idea that this guy is a homeless vet ain't out of the question. Besides that fact to put this dudes homelessness entirely on him would be like looking at all the ppl in the ghetto and telling them that their situation is entirely on them and there fault, from gangs to petty crime, which would be silly. More so it's just the case that our exploitative system is rittled with cracks that ppl like this dude fall through, just because someone has a decent experience serving our authoritarian government doesn't mean everyone has that experience.

I was a census taker in 2010. We had one night where we broke up into teams and traveled the tunnels of Las Vegas. Everyone must be counted. Everyone has value.

My step-dad lived there for years after my mother died. He was lost without her. He passed away a few years ago. The only person he kept in contact with was my nephew. After he died, my nephew brought his body back home to Florida and had him buried next to my mother. Very 😔 sad!
And, BTW, he was a Vietnam veteran navy seal.

I knew Wheels around 2013-2014 when I was homeless in Vegas. He’s a great dude. You’ll see him on the strip weaving palm leaf flowers. Say hi. He’s really nice.

I lived in Vegas as a young kid, me and my friends used to explore the flood system tunnels all the time. You could travel from the redrock area to the Strat tower and the main strip without ever leaving the system. Back then there was perhaps a few dozen people at the most living down there. They always left us alone and we left them alone, except on the rare occasion we'd buy cigarettes from them.

Mad props! Thanks for sharing the horrors of addiction and letting them tell their story's and treating them with dignity and respect. I'm grateful for every day I'm sober, 3 yrs now and hopefully many more.
22 years now, still occasional liver pangs and occasional dizziness, some permanent damage, but I wake up each day and sleep well.
When I was homeless in New York City there were many people living in the subway tunnels there. It's dark and dirty and the tunnels just go on forever. People can and do get lost down there ( or killed) and never resurface. I found the tunnels terrifying, but they did provide some shelter in the winter from the snow and cold. There are strange rooms, some even with furniture and power that whole groups take over and guard violently.

There is a great book written back in the late 80s early 90s by Jennifer toth called the "mole people." She lived below the streets of New York for a year with homeless people that were so mentally ill they refused to go to the surface streets. They had their own form of government and tapped into City Power, Water Etc. I believe they even took over one of the old Grand Central stations. I highly recommend the book.
I remember a couple of months ago when they said Vegas flooded due to its high waters worst in decades, I can only imagine the struggle the had to face during that time on top of this. So sad

I lived in the tunnels for 3 years until about 4 months ago I managed to to get myself off of opioids after a long battle with addiction, I use to be very successful with homes, cars and money, it all ended when a lady ran me over in the middle of the crosswalk and never stopped, she damaged my back really bad and the doctors gave me all these pain pills to take because I had no health insurance, I didn't even know what they were until it was too late. Unfortunately I'm going to be back in the tunnels in a 2 days because we can no longer afford our place, I can't find any work because I have no IDs or passport, everything including my social and birth certificate was stolen.

They are in every big city. New York, goes deep underground. They have their own hierarchy, rules, and groups. Preston, and Child, authors of many books wrote a book loosely based on these people. They dedicated it to the Forgotten Ones.

True but everyone has struggles. It’s important to know that your concerns are valid, and that life is still unhappy for lower middle class or people on the poverty line for various reasons. You shouldn’t be shamed because someone is living in a tunnel. Your concerns may include being able to pay rent, struggling to heal from a car accident, or having youe anxiety triggered by a new relationship. Don’t invalidate your issues!
Reminds me of my street family when I was homeless in Santa Cruz🫶✨ God bless these people. there's something weirdly beautiful about building community and supporting each other when we're all struggling and healing together. It's a sense of being home that a house alone can't provide.
I hope the police haven't come and raided this space after all this has been posted and shared online... These people deserve a safe space to cultivate community in peace, we really need to stop criminalizing homelessness and addiction :(

Considering how aggressive the eviction process is in Clark County, I'm surprised that there aren't more people living in these tunnels just because they couldn't afford to rent. I do worry about them during Monsoon season though. This makes me wish that I had lots of money to build them appropriate shelter.
it is only going to get worse. Rent prices are going up like crazy, our rent increased by 500 Dollars a month - I am serious, this is nuts. For people who already could barely afford rent, this means homelessness, because there are not enough programs out there to help those in need. We need more shelters, more programs to help people, and rent control, otherwise, those tunnels will start getting filled even more.
Even 9 years ago it was worse than you realize. That’s why every vacant property has 24/7 security. There’s easily 100,000 homeless in Vegas all looking for a squat.

There was a homeless guy who would sleep on the streets near my old Costa job. At the end of every shift I'd get a free coffee but instead I'd give it to him because he told me what he liked. Did that every day until I didn't see him on the street anymore, next time I saw him he was off the streets, looking much much healthier. What I did cost nothing, and sure it didn't help him get off of the streets, but every time we saw eachother (and still do now) we have a chat and it's really nice to talk to him. It really doesn't take much to make someone feel cared for

I see where you’re coming from but I don’t think that’s the case. As someone who has been to Vegas multiple times, there are more sketchy people on the streets than in the tunnels. Anyone who has been there will know that it’s full of scary people and they don’t do anything to stop it
been homeless on skid row los angeles twice for short period of time in the 90s. this is just depressing, but the reality is, this is what really goes on in the land of the free.
Appreciate you helping shine a light on this. Only thing I’d like to add is those aren’t “sewers” which go to treatment plants. It all goes to waterways un treated.

It's funny because I was homeless for a little more than two weeks in the middle of nowhere Texas...in the middle of scorching summer... and surrounded by ex-cons and alcoholics/drug addicts. I slept on the ground, and did all sorts of shit but beg for money. Had all sorts of adventures. They were some of the coolest people I've ever met. One thing I learned from this is: society isn't for everyone. You can choose to opt out and live your life the way you see fit. They were content with it. I respect that...but I got myself out of that shit. Going to China to teach/learn next year after next semester.
