And that all he knows is cities are “cool” and that the future will bring houses and the concept of property ownership. Ok I’m coming from a bias that education (learning) in its broadest meaning is always good, and certainly this child is getting some kind of education, but he’s also missing out. Has anyone taught him to read? Math? Science?

I love Slab City! I've been there a few times and stayed for a bit. Some of the people just want to be left alone to do their thing and others are really welcoming and helpful. I found it a unique and cool community.

Went there in June 2021 and December 2021. They say in the winter there are a ton of people but in June I saw way more than in December. December was great though,, June not so much. Almost got robbed just because I drive a nice looking truck and 5th wheeler. Glad I had my 120lbs german shepherd in my 5th wheel when I went to the Range. I also have an attack kitty :) But I was invited to the range just so the others in this group could try to rob me. Not cool.. I loved the free vibe though, just too many drug users for me to want to stay out there longer than a week or two.

Unfortunately, experience shows that even if they are only a tiny minority the outside world will focus on the drug addicts & crazies to the point of being blind to the majority being good folk. This is likely to be built into a reason to shut the whole place down.

    • @tomtee4442

@@Kimdino1 No I don't think so it's complaints to government and they pass laws to screw us all. Or shut down Slab City because of these crack and meth heads unfortunately they are the worst kind. The one meth head seemed alright but wait till he doesn't get his daily fix and runs out of money. This makes a person using crack or meth steal from anyone to get high. And they literally end up doing anything and loosing everything.

And is now an oasis in the midst of Copenhagen of free thinkers and free spirits of the world. There should be more places for the broken and the 'misfits'. Sniff a toke a mile away, probably most of them will turn and join the safety-and-security apparatus (security, police, military), replace sniffer dogs with sniffer bums, no need to tell, teach, train them, they already told, taught, trained themselves long ago

I had a family member who lived there for a year and a half. Murders occur pretty frequently despite the tiny population, mainly due to the fact that every other person is a junkie, or psychotic and off their meds. There aren't very many actual "anarchists" that live there, just a few that can tolerate it. Supposedly it wasn't super uncommon for junkies to take their kids with them there, and it always turns into a mess.

David you are like the democrats full of 2nd hand information. "I heard." "My sister said." I lived there one winter season and saw no murders. Arguments yes, pusing people and some attempted bulling yes. No serious harm and certainly no one was killed. I saw a drunk fall into a fire and we all gave her betasone cream, bandages etc. that we had. Someone with a car even took her to a free clinic. I saw her a few days later and she smile and said I was really wasted but got a lot of help. I have a car and before I made my every three day trip to Walmart or to town I made it a point to ask others like Spider, Kas, MoJoe if they wanted to go with if I had room orgive me a list and money and I'll pick up anything for them. No one ever asked me for money, food yes, water, yes beer yes. David go there and experience the Slabs yourself. If you behave yourself, don't pick fights or intrude no one will harm you. Be a man not a little girl. There are women living here that roam around un molested and free. I look forward to meeting you.

@@BangkokJohn It's not that difficult to comprehend why the standard practice of using anonymous sources and - here's the most important part - KEEPING THEM ANONYMOUS exists. It's not some new thing invented by the democrats. It's necessary. For example, just imagine how many more names would be on the "Clinton Body Count" list if journalists and investigative branches outed their anonymous sources? The guy who leaked the Lynch/Clinton tarmac meeting would've made the cut! Also, Despite what Fox tells you both sides are equally guilty of engaging in the 2nd hand "Many people are saying" & "An extremely credible source has told me..." BS whenever it suits them. To imply otherwise is simply hypocritical. In fact, those are both direct quotes from Trump to back up unsubstantiated claims he made about the Left. Not for nothing, but he has yet to produce that "extremely credible" Kenyan birth certificate to this day, btw.
What I'm saying is, don't simply accept & regugitate everything you read or hear from right wing biased news sources. Like the biased news sources on the left, they're mainly pushing their own agenda/propaganda and selling it as news. An opinion or accusation doesn't magically become fact just because we may personally agree with it. Anyway, I get the idea that you genuinely care and you seem like a decent dude. So cheers! Live free and travel safe, brother.

He said it was the worst decision of his life to stay out there as long as he did. He knew of 4 murders during his time there and witnessed one when a junkie stabbed an older guy to death. My neighbor said he still had nightmares of the sound the old guy made while he bled to death. Honestly the place is a shithole and I'd never visit there after talking with my neighbor.

And in our Western world middle class and upper-class families work and argue, fight over pathetic things.. And the "lowerclass" have benefits breadline life hanging over them paycheck to paycheck, while the homeless are seeking benefits while addicted to medications originally prescribed...
And a school system which is not teaching kids what REAL life is? Just systemising our youth, meaning the future generations are perpetuating and living the same issues... In a broken system, run by out of touch individuals, and groups with a know it all agenda, poisoning the food chain with chemicals... Processed crap, and dividing our countries through politics and religion.
So.. Has this kid really been born into poverty? Maybe his child hood is positively more peaceful than 80%+ of the worlds population...
It will become increasingly so rare in the future for a child to actually have a simple care free open air child hood.. Without the system sucking them up.
Maybe poverty is a perspective.. Maybe we are in poverty in our own way. Maybe the children crawling around in the slums of India. Or the sex slaves in slums and buildings at part of the world are the ones in poverty.
Peace brother:). Just a thought share for ya :)

Not all kids fit in to the one-size-fits-all education system, not all kids learn the same, and not all parents want their children trained like dogs so they can be well oiled cogs in the machine. From a few seconds of filming you've deduced that this child is not cared for or given attention and lacks pedigree (whatever that means)? Not sure you should be teaching any children with views like that, certainly wouldn't want you teaching my son, his dad didn't come with breeding certification to show his pedigree.

No Laws!? It just shows what I often say. There is something much more powerful than the law and that is peer pressure.
The first laws were no more than a formalised statement of what the common wish of people considered to be what made the community work, and it was self-enforced by the people. It was only when 'leaders' arose and bent the laws to suit themselves that organised enforcement became necessary.
I love anarchy, the real sort, not the punk smash-the state-type. It is the only real form of democracy. If only we could get enough people to understand all this. That's my opinion anyway.

You probably wouldn't love to see it tbh. An Indian guru back in the 70s did that exact thing, gathered a following including a ton of westerners, and then bought a ranch out in the middle of nowhere in Oregon. Didn't exactly turn out well & because of that, I doubt that kind of community is gonna be allowed to operate in that way again. The documentary is on Netflix, it's called Wild Wild Country & I'd highly recommend it

This video is pretty interesting, I'm glad it showed up in my feed.
I once knew a woman who I got my dog from who was really into this kind of lifestyle, and at the time I most certainly wasn't... this was maybe 10 years ago - but now, I can see the reason why people choose this kind of existence.
The one thing which always bothered me was when I would come across travelers out here, they would lecture me on how bad I have it by being a part of the system, then they would ask me for a hand out or a ride, and I'd be like forget it - if you are free, then you depend on no one [which is a sentiment I truly believe]
That same woman used to accuse me of being trapped, because I was paying a mortgage on a small house [which I've since paid off a while back...] and for a moment, I felt she was right - but now - I bet I have more freedom than she does.
This video is amazing... I'm writing this comment as I am watching it.
I for one would love to spend some time out in the slabs, just as more of an objective observer.... as I think long term for me it would be too depressing, as it's just a little too polluted for me, and I did not see any water [lakes or rivers], it's so damn hot... and especially if I came across children who seemed lost or as if they seemed to be really missing something [again, I know that's subjective...]
But then again, as many commenter's mentioned - each persons reality is very different from one another, and one can travel almost anyplace and see something similar, although not on such a scale as the slabs.
    I'm glad I watched this.
Maybe one day I will make it out there...............
I for one hope it stays in the hands of the people living there forever.

I thought it was a rather profound episode especially when they started figuring out how to make compost and how to garden in that desert environment and the different people who one of them happened to be an engineer who ends up making his own AC unit as well as his own water within his little confines. You should do more research on it you would really enjoy it
