About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in "Operation Market Garden" in the battles to liberate Holland in the fall/winter of 1944. Every one of the men buried in the cemetery, as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries, has been adopted by a Dutch family who mind the grave, decorate it, and keep alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted. It is even the custom to keep a portrait of "their" soldier in a place of honor in their home. Annually, on "Liberation Day," memorial services are held for "the men who died to liberate Holland." The day concludes with a concert. The final piece is always "Il Silenzio,” (The Silence) a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland's liberation. It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since. This year the soloist was a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by André Rieu and his orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands). This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer Nino Rossi.
As a British Military Veteran, I salute you, and the Dutch people for the care and compassion shown to our American Cousin’s and the upkeep of their resting places…. May they rest in peace.❤️

Edward, I see you've discovered Melissa. This interpretation of The Last Outpost , was her own creation and really kick started her career. You can see her 12 yrs old gig she did at the Prensingract Concert. She is pushing 30 now I think and you can watch her grow with many TH-cam video's. She inspired me to want to learn the trumpet though I haven't done so well.

What absolutely AMAZES me, is her phenomenal breath controll. That's a very difficult piece to play at any time, but a trumpet can make or break this piece. This 13 year old lass is an absolute maestra with her mastery of this instrument. Bravo young lady. You're definitely going places.
No matter how many times I hear this melody, it brings tears to my eyes. What an amazing talent for someone so young. How wonderful that Andre Rieu gave this young lady a chance to be recognized.
I'm in a Rest Home in New Zealand and had forgotten how beautiful this piece is. This young woman played " The Silence" to perfection. I don't know when this was videoed but I am so glad I came across this
Just WOW! I clicked on this as a dad of a 13 year old who is and exceptional guitarist. I always support other kids who have dedicated themselves as my boy has to an instrument. But lets just forget for a moment this is a 13 year old girl, lets admire her exceptional talent regardless. For me that was the most beautiful trumpet (?) playing I have ever heard. Well done young lady well done!
I watched this baby girl do this with Andre's orchestra shortly after they recorded it. I assumed she put together this version herself. I was dewley impressed. Then I found her video's at the Prinzengracht concerts. She inspired me to want to learn the trumpet. That high C at the end is no small feat.
An incredibly beautiful girl plays with the heavenly sound of a trumpet. In a few seconds I felt tears in my eyes. I have never heard anything so extraterrestrial. This performance, exactly from Melissa , I will wish to accompany me on my last journey ...
Oh, my! I don't know where to begin; the child played magnificently, but how in the world did she have sufficient wind in that tiny body?? The sound of a trumpet well played is just so special, kind of like liquid gold, and this little girl most definitely produced that sound. I noticed, and very much appreciated, when Andre gave the tiniest of nods to the girl, which I took as both encouragement and approval to/of her playing. Well done, child, well done!!
It is one of those instruments that if you do not play it technically VERY well it sounds terrible. Plenty of emotion in this 13 yr old, what will she do in a few more years?
The tone and emotion this young lady can produce are incredible. She has a stellar future. I played for years and Could never reach this standard. God bless you as you bless us with your playing.
Well, I was just passing through and this came up. Whatever the age, this was perfection. While I don't often hear trumpet music, I can't say that I have ever heard a trumpet played with such clarity and beauty. It makes you wonder what her future will be. I would say a good part of her life has already been dedicated to music and hopefully she will have many years to come. Melissa Venema. Note - Looking through her history it looks like this must have been done several years ago. She is older now with many performances behind her. All beautifully done but this is especially beautiful. Thanks for a nice morning.
A huge bow and even bigger thank you to Andre for ferreting out and bringing forth such astounding sounds and giving the performers a light-years-ahead break in their much deserved careers in presenting perfection.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
I have no words to express my feelings listening again and again and again at this extraordinary played peace of music by this wonderful girl. The gesture she makes at the end to the audience meaning, I think, "frome me to you, thanks you for listening and goodbye" is heartbreaking beautiful. It is so mooving. Thank you so much dear Melissa and Mr Rieu.
I have watched this video more than 20 times, and it brings tears to my eyes every time. And i am not even a soldier. But listening to this song makes me think of all the (young) men who died in WWll and the Pacific War. Thanks to them we now live in freedom on these continents. RIP🙏🙏

this 13 year old lass has just performed probably the finest rendition of il Silenzio that I have ever heard JJ
Eu digo o mesmo!👍👍👍👍
What absolutely AMAZES me, is her phenomenal breath controll. That's a very difficult piece to play at any time, but a trumpet can make or break this piece. This 13 year old lass is an absolute maestra with her mastery of this instrument. Bravo young lady. You're definitely going places.
Klasse
One word Bravo
She play the instrument like she knows it for 50 years she is a old soul in a new body
Another VN Veteran here....i have no words...but tears
Wow - I could only hope that the people here in the States could share that same pride in what our fathers did during the war!!
Amen to that Mike H. It is very much deserved
No matter how many times I hear this melody, it brings tears to my eyes. What an amazing talent for someone so young. How wonderful that Andre Rieu gave this young lady a chance to be recognized.
Amazing ... she played it so beautifully. Her presence and musical ability are a gift. Thank you.
I've played the trumpet since the 6th grade, I'm 63 now.. she has a tone that take years to accomplish, I can't imagine her in another 10 years..
I'm in a Rest Home in New Zealand and had forgotten how beautiful this piece is. This young woman played " The Silence" to perfection. I don't know when this was videoed but I am so glad I came across this
Stay safe Anne.
**ABSOLUTELY SO BEAUTIFUL SHE MADE ME CRY ALL THE WAY THROUGH IT!!! THANK YOU YOUNG LADY!!!**
**GOD BLESS YOU!!!**
I wish I played that well at 13....she is magnificent ❤ 2:22
My God! If that doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.
Yes....!.. it definitely does. I’m in joyful tears hearing Her. Love 💕. Rbrt callis usa
This is so stunningly beautiful. It has transported me to a different world ..back to the best years of my life. Thank you .
I watched this baby girl do this with Andre's orchestra shortly after they recorded it. I assumed she put together this version herself. I was dewley impressed. Then I found her video's at the Prinzengracht concerts. She inspired me to want to learn the trumpet. That high C at the end is no small feat.
@@mmartin7483 me too. It was great then and it’s just as great now!!!
Every time I play it, Sir.
This song rememberd always on a military funeral. Respect to all veterans and soldats
An incredibly beautiful girl plays with the heavenly sound of a trumpet. In a few seconds I felt tears in my eyes. I have never heard anything so extraterrestrial. This performance, exactly from Melissa , I will wish to accompany me on my last journey ...
Questo è il Silenzio militare italiano .....solo pochi possono percepire le emozioni che dà.. ...Semper Fidelis.....
I think more for the timing, she has very much execise
It is one of those instruments that if you do not play it technically VERY well it sounds terrible. Plenty of emotion in this 13 yr old, what will she do in a few more years?
Some time they use something that’s cold circular breathing. In tru the nose, and out of the mouth.
She looks 40 years old with thin body of 13
Thanks for sharinhgAudrey lookes yummy 😋
The tone and emotion this young lady can produce are incredible. She has a stellar future. I played for years and Could never reach this standard. God bless you as you bless us with your playing.
This piece was the most moving I have ever heard it played. The young girl felt the music, understood it, and drove it straight into my heart.
Kislány, ez mindent visz ! Megkönnyeztettél az előadásoddal, NAGY TEHETSÉG VAGY ! Élmény volt Téged hallgatni.
Beautiful and as a former Trumpet player I salute this young woman for both her courage and her skill...
The word "trumpet" doesn't get capitalized.
She has a beautiful gift. I've never heard this done with so much feeling. It raised the hairs on my arms!
So many people seem to struggle with this instrument and this young girl handles it effortlessly and beautifully.
Ditto!!!
One of THE most beautiful pieces of music ever composed, played to PERFECTION. Brings tears to my eyes each time I listen to it.
A huge bow and even bigger thank you to Andre for ferreting out and bringing forth such astounding sounds and giving the performers a light-years-ahead break in their much deserved careers in presenting perfection.
WOW! Absolutely heart grabbing. What a prodigy standing forefront. Her timing is impeccable.
That is one child I would never complain about her practicing at home ,absolutely flawless performance
My son plays 3/4 Tuba and I never complain. ;) :)
where is she playing ??
And a beautiful smile to end it all
She brings a joyful tear to my eyes, everything I play it . She is Excellent
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
She plays not only an instrument, she plays from her soul. She's wonderful ! 🎷🎶
Rest in peace, all you Young soldiers, who have falen during the War .God bless you and your family! Love!
Fallen for...?
Veronica, fallen because of hateful politicians, not for peace, I'm sorry but the US regime and others have caused much sorrow in the world
@@hansniessen8976 fallen for politician's greed
I have no words to express my feelings listening again and again and again at this extraordinary played peace of music by this wonderful girl.
The gesture she makes at the end to the audience meaning, I think, "frome me to you, thanks you for listening and goodbye" is heartbreaking beautiful. It is so mooving. Thank you so much dear Melissa and Mr Rieu.
The silence and respect that the audience gave her tells you everything you need to know
I have watched this video more than 20 times, and it brings tears to my eyes every time. And i am not even a soldier. But listening to this song makes me think of all the (young) men who died in WWll and the Pacific War. Thanks to them we now live in freedom on these continents. RIP🙏🙏
Right there with you!!!🗽🙏🏼🥹. I bet you choke up when the fighter pilots fly by too like I do!! 🇺🇸
same here
Young Lady, THAT was the BEST I have EVER heard this played!! You totally captivated the audience - and Andre, too!! I listened to this many times - it was SO beautiful!!! Thank you, Melissa, you are a True Virtuoso!!! God Bless and Much Love! Jerry N.

Never have I ever heard this played so beautifully!! She's so young, truly a very gifted young child!!
1.2K people must live at the bottom of a very deep pit and have no soul ,this girl is an angel, so wake up and see the beauty. 🎶🇬🇧🇬🇧

Thanks TH-cam, this button no longer exists…
The pace and timbre of her vibrato is amazing. Such an ear to be able to relate these emotions with so few years.
