First heard this by Nini Rosso when I was a child, my mum was Italian born and raised in Iesi near Ancona and met my dad during the war, she was in tears when she heard this. Both mum and dad have passed now, but whenever I hear this tune I get very sentimental, I love it🙏❤️

Una melodía que no sólo se debería entonar a militares, muy por el contrario, a toda persona cristiana que cree en Dios, Todopoderoso, porque este estilo va más allá de ideologías militares.. es verdaderamente un poema musical celestial y que no importa el credo religioso, es una alabanza a la vida, presente, futuro y pasado. As an Aussie who is an avid supporter of our ANZAC tradition, I play this each and every ANZAC Day on the 25th April as I find this tune the closest to the last post traditionally played at every ANZAC Day memorial and every digger's funeral. I find this version by Melissa Vanemma is so poignant and played with such feeling it cannot but get everyone's emotions going. Well done Melissa and I wish you every success with your performances as well as hoping you may visit us 'down under' in the not too distant future.

To Mario & Gandolf - these are two separate, although similarly sounding, pieces of music. As a former British Royal Marine Bandsman I have played both and they are different pieces. Il Silenzio is a very haunting piece, correctly meaning silence, although I did not know it was played for retiring Italian service personnel - most apt. Taps, as correctly stated, originated as Lights Out back in the American Civil War and then became the burial melody for interring US service personnel, as opposed to a British military funeral where we play Last Post. The main differential is that Taps is played on a bugle as all the notes are simple open harmonics, whereas Il Silenzio needs the use of valves and could not (in 'normal' circumstances) be played on a bugle. Don't argue these facts - just accept that they are both very melancholy pieces used in very apt moments.
