    Arthur is an honest enigma to me, never met a single medium that manages to be both intriguing, terrifying and soothing at the same time. Doesn't help at all that the quality just gets better and better. A true national treasure.

    Watching you, Isaac Arthur, is like being in a lecture at school. You learn a lot. Have a few moment where you get lost. But enjoy the voice of your Professor so much that you don't care how long you sit in that hard wooden chair.

      :) I think that's why I always say I prefer doing this over return to Uni and picking up the prof-route again. I only have to give a discussion once and everyone can tune in when and where they want, rather than some stiff cramped desk.

      Some things should be made, within 200 years. Most things would be done in 50 years if we actually tried to do stuff. I mean colonizing the moon wouldn't really take that much effort... I mean even hollowing out a large chunk of it to create a base wouldn't really be too hard, Even if modern day solar panels are quite crap, on the moon they would work better. I mean you could make vertical farms with red heat lamps easily, and seeing as hydroponics is 7 to 8 times more efficient than using soil, you could easily manage 5-6 million people on the moon, in about 20 years. Water wouldn't even be a problem, you can just turn hydrogen and oxygen directly into water, you can add basically recycle everything.
      Everything that a K-1 Civilization can do, we could do to, if we put effort into it. Everything K-2 and K-3 can do is off limit for now.

    When I worked on a submarine I had to get used to gravity being variable.
    You would walk through the white tunnel and see a footprint on the wall.
    We would emergency blow and get a short roller coaster ride.
    Nothing as extreme as a space ship though.

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I honestly don't know how anyone spends months on a ship let alone a sub, but it probably is the best analogy for a spaceship as opposed to a ship or plane.

      @justinbiggs1005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joseph Fox what kind of submarine did you work on? I'd love to work on a submarine like an Ohio or Virginia class sub but claustrophobia would probably kick in.

    • @4ltimit1
      @4ltimit1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Sometimes they stick claustrophobic minds or tall bodies on subs, it's sadistic.
      I was on a fast attack.(Los Angeles-class but I had to look it up to be sure, yay memory).
      The Navy always needs more nukes (my job) so if you qualify they have a spot. It's not for everyone.

      @justinbiggs1005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joseph Fox that is sadistic, lol. The Los Angeles class sub was quite a good sub for it's time. If I'm not mistaken they still use them to this day upgraded of course. Not sure what role they are used for nowadays. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

    I like this video. One point on contention about what the Expanse did with Ceres is they did live inside it while spinning it up. Down in Ceres was towards the surface and up towards the core. The spin was less that .3 G and the authors described the further up you went. The worse the coriolis was. Eros was the same.

      You cannot be in a simulation. Beacuse it would mean that the REAL world is worst then this. In wich case you either don't have an option to be in a simulation or activly working on to fix the REAL world.
      The REAL world being borring is not an excuse either, beacuse in that case you get bored of being in a simulation too. So yeah. There is absolutelly no reason to be in a simulation like this.

      "Yeah, let's build a computer simulation for this other species that's so shitty that they question whether or not it's a simulation within just a few decades of developing computer technology themselves. I mean, even though we could easily just prevent their programming from being able to contemplate the idea entirely, let's not, because of reasons." - some species more advanced that us

    • @sicksock435446
      @sicksock435446 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You assume the simulation is built for us. It might just be a high fidelity simulation of star formation which happens to have physics complicated enough to allow life to emerge.
      Hell, it could be some 5th dimensional beings screensaver for all we know.

    I like how Isaac pointed out that a ship will likely not worry about anything other then the fuel/energy usage. Remembering back to Star Trek: Voyager, I mentally cringed every time that they were worrying about anything other then fuel and energy. So many times a crewman would say something like, "Captain, energy reserves are down 10%." Janeway would then reply with something like, "That's it, no more coffee for breakfast." Like that cup of coffee would have gotten them one more system closer to earth if she did not drink it.

      Just remember that seatbelts are only god for head on impact. Wearing one in a side on impact can cause you more damage than not, and seatbelts themselves are likely to cause damage regardless. Humans have a long way to go before we've got a super safe harness system.

    • @zchen27
      @zchen27 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What about a five/six point harness?

    • @TheBoundFenrir
      @TheBoundFenrir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Adding to this, remember: people didn't trust their safety to others quite so much back then: people didn't want to wear their seatbelts because they were worried if something happened they'd be unable to get out of the vehicle fast enough. Their plan for disaster was to leap from the car. Nowadays this is both much more dangerous (higher-speed vehicles, more vehicles on the road, etc) and harder to do (opening the car door against oncoming atmosphere, etc), while the safety provided by staying in the vehicle during the wreck has improved miles and bounds thanks to crash testing and improved materials science.

    In Leviathan Wakes, Ceres is lived inside, not on, similar to how Eros is built. That's why in the series, S2E4 the railway they are on is upside down in relation to the surface and Miller's "Spoiler" falling away when he does a hard landing.
    And the gravity on those stations is not 1G, if I remember correctly.

    • @sicksock435446
      @sicksock435446 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats the problem though. Once you increase spin gravity on the inside to the point it's stronger than surface gravity, the surface of your asteroid starts flying into space.

    • @julopabene8736
      @julopabene8736 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The habitats are built on the surface and look pretty exposed, so it's likely that the material that would fly off has already flown off and the remaining material is stabilized and constructed on.

    Another lovely video! I think how the tech and what resources you have affects your culture is a terribly under-used aspect of worldbuilding. Many books start falling apart at that for me. As a newbie sci fi author, I really appreciate videos like these; the cultures different characters are from will affect everything.

      David Barkland When looking at earth there is a multitude of cultures and even though improved communications streamline them towards a kind of global culture I find it likely that there will always be a great and distinct difference in how someone from India thinks and acts compared to someone from let's say Canada does.
      If we then also add terraformed planets, moons, comets, cylinders, dyson swarms and virtual realities then number of cultures and languages will grow to such a staggering amount that the UN of today might be seen as nothing more than a small family discussion.

    There's a great series on Netflix (called Knights of Sidonia) where people are genetically modified to use photosynthesis (only having to eat normal once a week). There's a lot of other cool, practical elements the creator thought of to have people living in space, on a Giant spaceship, essentially on the run from predatory aliens.
    Edit: Oh, and sudden, deadly gravitational changes, when their poorly maneuverable ship has to evade, is a big part of the series. (Everyone has to wear rockclimbing hooks on their uniforms.)

    • @edhikurniawan
      @edhikurniawan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Read the manga too, it is more detailed. The anime isn't half bad either, just maybe not for many, at some parts.
      If you love 3D anime such as Knights of Sidonia, i recommended to watch Godzilla, Kaijuu wakusei too.
      Im not Godzilla fan, but i quickly attached to it. Because it has better 3D animation than Sidonia, like less mouth stuttering.
      Also the story.
      About how humanity tried to leave earth living in spaceship and face difficulties in an effort to flee from giant aliens emerging from nowhere.
      They decided back to earth to stop the sleeping giant rather than trying to survive, let alone living at the harsh space.
      It has more scientifically accurate atomic breath too.

      I'll have to give it a try, Netflix tends to be okay to great on scifi but does thankfully provide a lot of it

    • @mthemodulator
      @mthemodulator 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Admittedly I haven't seen Knights of Sidonia (yet!) but the concept of modifying human genes for photosynthesis has been theorized before and general consensus is it wouldn't actually contribute more than a few calories a day. Not even enough to fuel an immobile sleeping human body. Our brains alone require ridiculous amounts of energy just to carry out basic functions. I guess I have to watch the show to see the handwave about it and then see the other cool stuff. :P

    • @brackonstudios
      @brackonstudios 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edhi Kurniawan I actually just watched Netflix's Godzilla recently and I thought it was pretty good! I can tell things are going to pick up with the coming episode (which I'm glad I won't have to wait as long for as others have had to). :P Also, I agree there were parts of Sidonia (mainly relational drama) that won't appeal to many people, but I don't think those character interactions took away from the battles so much as heightened the stakes of them.

      [The speakers of Hab Deck 32 at Arthur Central suddenly crackle to life, and after a brief period of seemingly melancholic claviature a message is blasted across the corridors]
      *HELLO!?*
      *IS IT ME YOU'RE LOOKING FOR?*
      *I CAN SEE IT IN YOUR EYES, DESPERATE FOR ALGAE PA-ASTE*
      *BUDGET CUTS WERE MADE, THE BOARD REPLACED US WITH A MUSIC INTERFACE*
      [The last lines echo across the Hab Module, causing the titanium structure to vigorously reverberate, until the silent humming of the life-support slowly reasserts itself.]

  • @AtilaElari

    Some while ago I spent a lot of time thinking about how the clothes of an early-era zero-g space habitat would look like. Deployable membrane helmets and gloves stored in collar and cuffs in case of sudden depressurization/ filtering failure, micro-turbines for propulsion, wrist-harpoon for working near the habitat's outer shell.
    And puffballs everywhere. Not the mushroom, but engineered organisms that use their lungs as a rocket motor to float around the hab and catch any trash that isn't supposed to be floating around.
    To my shame though I never gave the furniture thought it deserved.

  • @Snowy123

    I recommend people to both read the books and watch the series if you love space operas. The books as always go in-depth to the characters, the plots and intrigue and the world building. However there's still value to watch the series if you've read the books as the space combat CG is the best space combat CG I've seen in my life, they get all the details right. If you want the audiobooks are great also since you can listen to the narrator speak in Belter creole which is lovely to listen to.

    Ceres doesn't (or, didn't at least) lack water, all of the valuable materials were mined and sent straight back to Mars and Earth.
    And most of anything mined is taken, or sold to the Inner planets.
    9:07
    I don't know how fast Ceres would have to be spun to be broken apart, but it should be noted that their gravity is *no* where near as strong as Earth's of Mar's , and how would spinning Ceres to create centripetal force as a stand in for gravity going to decrease the gravity?

  • @Noctua07
    @Noctua07 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really interesting episode. Especially being a huge fan of the Expanse series. Just one thing regarding what you said about the spinning. I understood it that they actually spun up Ceres (and other stations) to use the centrifugal force to create simulated gravity inside e.g. Ceres. Miller even mentions it when he goes on Ceres towards the end of the book that he has to watch out so as to not be flung of Ceres when standing on its surface.
    So Ceres and other objects are spun up for the same reason you'd spin up an O'Neill cylinder.

    Another possible direction humans may take for deep space travel is to breed or genetically engineer humans to be very short. If you cut the height of a person in half, you cut the mass of that person by at least half, as well as reduce the size of much of the ship significantly. The cost of space travel per head (literally the head of a person ) would be dramatically reduced.

    When Isaac started describing how a spacesuit would actually work in the future I was blown away. From where is this guy getting these ideas? My god, he should write sci fi novels or have Netflix create a miniseries. Just take the script and put over some insanely cool graphics and we are done.

    I look forward to an in-depth rotating hab episode, because, in this particular channel, an in-depth rotating hab episode is really an *IN DEPTH* rotating hab episode! It is a supremely obvious next step after any degree of ISRU is achieved. And once the first one or two habs are built, A.) building them gets massively cheaper and B.) building them never stops, and becomes an entire new default mode of human existence and growth over half a millennium or more. But the more I think about it, the more I realize there's a *TON* of engineering to be done before we forge the first asteroid-sourced I beam destined for a kilo-hab. This is a worthy project of the next entire generation of engineers.

      Katie made that first one for me for the Colonizing Titan episode, and Unity is our ship from the old Life in a Space Colony series, Legion Tech Studios whipped those clips up for me a few months back, the ship is a bit of an inside joke for the game (Hades 9) as the old version is displayed as a model in one of the bars there and sneaks into some of the lore.

    Awkward when you realise the shortage on Crabtree was energy... as generated by the fusion reactor of the Rockhopper sitting atop a water ice cap on Janus. A pity the author had apparently overlooked electrolysis as a solution.

    Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap series is another one that's lesser known but does a good job of describing the small course adjustments to avoid weapons fire in space, as well as the layout of a ship using spin to emulate gravity.
